I hate these years when the only reason I have to root for either team is being sick of hearing about one of them. One other factor in this: the Steelers are an old NFL team with a lot of history and playoff appearances in their time. So you be assured that Hasselbeck's sister-in-law will be mentioned a few times in a cross effort to show a hot chick with cause and promote one ABC's popular shows. SEATTLE -- I'm not sure how I feel about a Super Bowl being named after a shirt size (XL), but nobody can argue about the two finalists. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks belong in the championship game, though nobody really belongs in Detroit during the first week of February But that's where we're all headed, even though it was only five degrees colder in Torino, Italy -- site of the upcoming Winter Olympics -- than it was in Detroit on Sunday night. In a pinch, Detroit now can handle the Super Bowl, the luge heats, and the Punt, Pass, and Ice Sculpt competition. Jerome Bettis doesn't care. The Steelers' mass transit system is going home to Motown, courtesy of a 34-17 win at Mile Low. And the Seahawks don't care. They're going to their first-ever Super Bowl. Tell them the game is in Fargo, N.D., and they'd arrive with smiles as wide as Mike Holmgrem's bald spot (not that there's anything wrong with bald spots). Just terrible. Obviously they're not a historically great team like Dallas, GB, or SF, but they're not one of those historically bad teams that stick out in your mind, like the Cardinals, Bengals or orange creamsicle Bucs Really, if you look back at their team history, you'll see a lot of 9-7, 8-8 and 7-9 seasons. Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted January 24, 2006 Ahh, it is great to finally have a little free time to finally post here... that is what student teaching will do to a guy. Well, first off, who had these two teams playing in the Super Bowl in the beginning of the season. I think the answer would be very miniscule. However, I think this Super Bowl could be very good, since both teams are peaking at the right time and there are so many interesting story lines which will keep every football junkie going until 2/05/06. Another plus is that the Patriots will not get a chance to defend their crown, so we finally will get a new champion, which IMO is a good thing. I don't think this game will be a blowout, because both defenses are solid, which will keep both teams in throughout the game. Big Ben has redeemed himself from his awful playoff performance last season and Hasselbeck has removed the "We are going to take the ball and we are going to score" demons as well. Bettis gets to end his career playing in the Super Bowl, which is a fitting end for a future HOF and Alexander proved that he is not a soft player, but turning the most impressive RB performance of the playoffs. Both teams caught breaks to get here, whether it was a season saving tackle by Big Ben and a shanked field goal, or being able to face a Skins team which had a very mediocre offense and being able to win without playing the best football. Both the Steelers and Seahawks earned the right to play in front of the world. I am not sure who will win, you can make a strong case for either. The AFC is the better conference and beating the top three seeds is very impressive. The Steelers proved during this run that they are not just a run-first, pass little team. Big Ben has shown remarkable passing skills, which helps open up the running game. If the Steelers take a lead, they are very hard to come back on, because their running game eats the clock up. The defense has been all over the place, led by the mane of Troy P. (I am not going to even attempt to spell his name) who appears to be in on every tackle and play. Also, it was very impressive that the Steelers won three on the road in the playoffs. Definately a Road Warrior team, which might have been very beneficial for this team, since they did have 6-2 road record. The Steelers are favorites for a reason. Seattle, despite being knocked for playing a weak schedule in a weak division, still was the cream of the NFC. They have a very underrated defense, which has shut down their last two playoff opponents. They shut down Steve Smith, who I felt was the most dominant player of the playoffs up to the Conference Championships and they made Delhome, who had the highest QB rating in the playoffs, look like one of the first year QB's did. Hasselback has been very good. He carried the Seahawks to a win over the Skins, despite the turnovers, and he is making every pass count when the Hawks need a play from him, he has delivered. He is the heart and soul of the Seahawks. Also, the Seahawks might not have the greatest recieving corps, but they are not dropping the passes, like last season. Finally, I think Alexander finally managed to have a great playoff game, after disappointing playoff games of years past. He looked like the MVP, juking Panthers left and right, and finding the end zone two times, against a very good Panther D. Can the Steelers stop him, well I think they will slow him down, but I do think Alexander will rush for 80+ yards and find the endzone at least one time. So with that, I think this could go either way. The Steelers look tough and the Seahawks have played tough. Both defenses are good and both offenses are clicking. I am pulling for the Seahawks, since my good friend is living close to Seattle and they are in the same division as my Niners, but if Pitt wins, I will not be shedding too many tears, if non at all. I really just want a close, hard fought game and that is what I think it will be. The Seahawks I think got their one bad game out of their system and still won the game. So my prediction will be: Seahawks 27 Pitt 24 in a very hard fought game, with football fans being the real winners. May both teams have a great game. Pittsburgh is getting all the media hype, and seems like everyone around me is hopping on the Seattle bandwagon with the "They're the West Coast team. Close enough!" mentality. I've been giving everybody crap for that except this one guy at work, who I've seen wear his Alexander jersey frequently since the season started. I think I'm just going to root for both teams to keep it close so I don't tune out by the third quarter like most of the other playoff games this year. They always had exciting games, but it seemed they lost EVERY close game. Tatupu has really solidified what has been a good offense for a while. Shaun is running harder than he ever has. I can't tell you how many plays this season he got met at the line of scrimmage, and inexplicably squirted forward for 5 yds. Jurevicius's great hands have given Hass the confidence he needed to be a great QB. Right now. I'm happier as a sports fan than I've ever been. I don't care how many lame Seattle cliches ESPN focuses on, I don't care if they lose, and everyone goes back to saying they're chokers. I don't even care that 50% of my workplace can't name a Seahawks player and watched last week's game.
