Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2006 Just so Bob and I don't keep clouding up The Office thread. Emily's Reasons Why Not - Gone after one episode. The second season of Jake in Progress - Despite ABC pimping it in recent weeks, it's gone. NBC's Book of Daniel - Gone. In this case, controversey did not = ratings. There's also Love Monkey, South Beach, Four Kings, In Justice, and Crumbs have all been... Unspectacular, although I did enjoy Love Monkey and Crumbs to a certain extent. Let the countdown to imminent cancelation begin...

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2006 Apparently CBS forgot how putrid Dharma and Greg was. I had no idea what the big deal with that chick was, then I read that she was in that show, which I had never watched to begin with. And that Heather Grahm show -- wow. Just one episode. At least that retared chick lawyer show from a few seasons ago got axed after two or three.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2006 In Justice is bad, but Kyle Machlachlan's overacting and playing every scene over the top makes the show somewhat watchable. I also like seeing Constance Zimmer on TV, she was great on Joan of Arcadia. Emily's Reasons Why Not being cancelled after one episode, especially after all the hype it got is really funny. I wanted to watch Book of Daniel but it sounded like a second-rate JOA knockoff, and plots like "Someone else sees Jesus too!" is just killing potential storylines. Plus it was going up against Numb3rs, which is probably pulling in the best Friday ratings for a drama since X-Files.

I just absolutely refuse to watch shows like Numb3rs, Law & Order, CSI, In Justice, Cold Case, etc. at this point. At least when I sit down and watch shows like Veronica Mars or Book of Daniel, which have continuing storylines, I feel like I'm accomplishing a tiny little something because I'm following something. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Even though In Justice sucks, at least it's different then your usual procedurial. It's interesting seeing how they figure out someone didn't do it, even though the fact that every episode the police are corrupt and clueless is getting old. The fact that in every episode they'll confront someone, who will laugh them off and say "I'd like to see you try", only for them to bring up some evidence forcing them to comply is getting old. Without a Trace is the best of the procedurials. It's more character-driven then most as they take you into someone's life each episode. The show also has compelling stories, great acting and is not afraid to be horribly depressing. The Jack-widow storyline looks like a dud, but to Without's credit, they usually figure this out and let it go. Criminal Minds is the other procedurial I watch. It's a bad knockoff of Without a Trace at times, but Mandy Patakin does a good Anthony LaPaglia and they're good at creating suspence. They're also starting to add more depth to Patakin's character, so yay for that. I also watched Killer Instinct and loved it, if only to see what stupid crime they would come up with next. It was unique, if nothing else.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 For some reason, I want "Four Kings" to fail miserably. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's because it just looks and feels like the type of stupid comedy that NBC wants to present to us as the quintessential 'guy comedy' sitcom of the new millennium. About "Emily's Reasons": wasn't there some controversy surrounding that? As in it was greenlit and produced sort of without the higher ups being aware of how bad it was? I thought I heard something about that. As in, it was just really atrocious, but the execs didn't know that, and didn't realize it was so awful until after the first episode, at which the ABC head honchos had a WTF moment and cancelled it outright. Perhaps it's because it just looks and feels like the type of stupid comedy that NBC wants to present to us as the quintessential 'guy comedy' sitcom of the new millennium. Pretty much how I feel about it. I don't hate it, but at this point, Joey would be better entertainment than Four Kings. About "Emily's Reasons": wasn't there some controversy surrounding that? As in, it was just really atrocious, but the execs didn't know that, and didn't realize it was so awful until after the first episode, at which the ABC head honchos had a WTF moment and cancelled it outright. From the ABC critics thingy EMILY'S REASONS WHY NOT/JAKE IN PROGRESS EXCHANGE #1 QUESTION: "Emily's Reasons Why Not" didn't last too long. Why would you put so much into promoting a show like that and not give it a little bit of a chance to find an audience? STEPHEN McPHERSON: Well, we had spent the majority of the big long-lead advertising money before we even saw a script, unfortunately, given the way production schedules work. Creatively we just did not get the show where it needed to be. All of us tried really hard: producers, network, studio, but it just never got on track. So once we saw what it really was not launching and really not getting an audience right out of the gate, we knew we had the Golden Globes the next week and the "24" premiere. I think you have to be -- you have to kind of measure your patience based on how you believe in the creative, and there we felt like, unfortunately, it was not going to get better. And we needed to make a quick change. And we saw life in "The Bachelor," which is, I think, cast better than it's been in five years. So we're really excited about that and wanted to make sure that we could continue to support that and not have that kind of be in jeopardy because of the first --

At least when I sit down and watch shows like Veronica Mars or Book of Daniel, which have continuing storylines, I feel like I'm accomplishing a tiny little something because I'm following something. Some of the shows you've mentioned do try to keep a continuity going though - while most of the focus is on the case, they do try and keep developing the characters throughout. I know that for Numb3rs, they try to maintain some ongoing subplots that keep the characters moving forward. Overall, I think that crime dramas just come down to personal preference. A show like CSI is tailor made for syndication - you can show episodes out of order and it won't affect your viewing pleasure much, while a show like Veronica Mars (which I haven't seen since CTV airs it in the summer up here) probably requires you to watch maybe every other episode to catch up. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 The 2 shows that Im looking forward to the most.. Heist - takes over Law and Orders Wednesday Timeslot March 22 (Law and Order moves to 9pm..ouch..). Its been called a mix of Prison Break (in this case breaking into 3 Jewelry stores on Rodeo Drive the day of the Oscars) and 24 (its in a real time aspect). The Unit - " ...follows a covert team of special forces operatives as they risk their lives on undercover missions around the globe, while their families maintain the homefront, protecting their husbands' secrets." Its got Dennis Haysbert..and the reason why President Palmer got killed on 24. There are a few other things...Deal or No Deal comes back after the Olympics..I really liked it the first go around..Fox has a new comedy called Free Ride that will take the place of American Dad on Sunday nights (its supposedly an improv style show too..dunno about that..) Not to mention the much anticipated return of Prison Break March 20th. GREATEST 2 HOUR BLOCK ON NETWORK TV! Prison Break at 8, 24 and 9...

Special K 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Love Monkey actually looks pretty good. Does it have a laugh track? How I Met Your Mother is OK, but I basically don't watch it because of the laugh track. I can't deal with it anymore after Earl, AD, Scrubs and Curb.

Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2006 Love Monkey, after three episodes, is "on hiatus." Goodbye. Courting Alex is doing spectacuarly. Crumbs is doing fine. I really enjoyed the first episode but turned off the second a few minutes into it. UPN looks like it's going to let South Beach, which was at a 1.0 this week, die peacefully on February 22nd. Four Kings will get renewed, even though it doesn't deserve it. Haven't been following In Justice. Aside from NBC's stupid reality show Deal or No Deal, nothing else premieres until March. Yeah, FOX seems to like to premiere single camera, non-laugh track shows during midseason. Gives 'em a good excuse to cancel them.

Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2006 Get This Party Started, the ratings of which were almost an all time low for UPN, is gone. Crumbs is "on hiatus." I wouldn't be surprised if they plugged it in during the summer since it wasn't bombing.
