Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Inspired by the Dirtbombs' cover of the Stones' "No Expectations," which I was listening to earlier. They take the lyrics, replace the slide guitar from the original with a fuzzed out bass while the rest of the band runs through a hyper take on "Sympathy for the Devil." It even throws in a little "Hey Jude" at the end. In spite of its gimmickiness, it really, really works. Far better than the Flaming Lips attempt to combine the White Stripes and the Butthole Surfers.
BUTT Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 The "Songs That Have Never Been Done Right..." thread is, in a way, about cover songs. So, 6 days ago.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 Yes, but here we should talk about good songs. No sense mucking up that other thread with unbridled positivity.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 Later, I should post some songs here. It'll be fun for all.
PLAGIARISM! Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Raymonde's 'No One Can Hold a Candle To You' must have been written for Morrissey. Dunno if there's a studio version available tho, unless you count the Peel sessions. Â The Butthole Surfers actually did a really good job of 'The One I Love' (REM) but again I dunno if they ever did it in the studio. Â I like the Associates' 'Love Hangover'. Â The Birthday Party's version of 'Loose' from their Peel sessions is fucking wonderful.
Guest J0bber Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Machine Head's cover of "Message in a Bottle" is one of the best poppish songs covered by a metal band ever.
CanadianChick Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Speaking of pop songs covered, I quite enjoy Local H's cover of Toxic.
Nighthawk Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I can't think of many that I haven't said numerous times before. It's sort of beating a dead horse with me. Â Let's see... I thought Rage Against the Machine's version of "How I Could Just Kill a Man" was way, way better than the original. It fit the tone of the lyrics much better. If there was a song they were born to cover, that's it.
Lord of The Curry Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 The Corrs feat. Bono- When The Stars Go Blue
Corey_Lazarus Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Pick up Metallica's Garage, Inc. Listen. Disregard the Motörhead and Misfits covers. There you go.  Also, White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman" far surpasses the original. Then again, it was a different take on it, instead of the Boogieman being one who boogies down to the disco flavor, he means the Boogeyman, as in the one who creeps out from the closet door to devour the souls of children.
The Czech Republic Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Also, White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman" far surpasses the original. Then again, it was a different take on it, instead of the Boogieman being one who boogies down to the disco flavor, he means the Boogeyman, as in the one who creeps out from the closet door to devour the souls of children. Yeah, that's much better.
Art Sandusky Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 The Corrs feat. Bono- When The Stars Go Blue WRONG WRONG WRONG
Gary Floyd Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Current 93's cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Summer of Love" is great. Â Also great is Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpenter's "Superstar".
haws bah gawd Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Message in a Bottle by Machinehead is very good. Â Some other covers I enjoy are: Â Wicked Game - H.I.M. (BEST.COVER.EVER) Rock the Casbah - TRUSTCompany Last Kiss - Pearl Jam In the Air Tonight - Nonpoint Saturday Night is Alright for Fighting - Nickelback (I like Nickelback, so fuck you!) Crazy - Mushroomhead One - Korn Land of Confusion - Disturbed I Will Survive - Cake
Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 The Corrs feat. Bono- When The Stars Go Blue WRONG WRONG WRONG Seriously. The Corrs? Bono? Ryan Adams is very hit-and-miss, but that's one of his best songs.
Nighthawk Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Also, White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman" far surpasses the original. Â Nah. I'm sure you're no disco fan, but within it's genre, that's a perfect song. I like WZ's version too, though.
PLAGIARISM! Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 The Cramps make pretty much every song they cover their own.
Cran Da Maniac Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Land of Confusion - Disturbed   Is that the Genesis Song?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Message in a Bottle by Machinehead is very good. Â Some other covers I enjoy are: Â Wicked Game - H.I.M. (BEST.COVER.EVER) Rock the Casbah - TRUSTCompany Last Kiss - Pearl Jam In the Air Tonight - Nonpoint Saturday Night is Alright for Fighting - Nickelback (I like Nickelback, so fuck you!) Crazy - Mushroomhead One - Korn Land of Confusion - Disturbed I Will Survive - Cake This is pretty much what would be playing in my own personal hell. Â I really like pretty much anyone covering the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane." Last time we did this I think godthedog mentioned the Cowboy Junkies version, used to great effect in Natural Born Killers. Gang of Four's cover is great, too, and surprisingly fun coming from them. Lately I've been enjoying the zip the Arcade Fire put on their cover of the Talking Heads' "This Must Be The Place." Not as good as the original, but almost equally as enjoyable. Incandenza will now shoot me in the crotch.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 I don't think their TH cover is that bad; I just hate those steel drums.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Yeah, I kinda like the steel drums. Way to go, me. Â Here's a slight variation: shitty cover songs that introduced you to the far superior original. E.g.: I heard David Gray's "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," and then checked out the original by Soft Cell, which I love. Marc Almond is way hardcore.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 I couldn't get the board's file attachment to work, so here's ysi:  Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil  Rolling Stones - No Expectations  The Dirtbombs - No Expectations  c + p each link into your address bar and change the xx's in hxxp to tt's. Also, each track is in m4a format, so you anti-iTunes people are out of luck.
Corey_Lazarus Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Also, White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman" far surpasses the original. Â Nah. I'm sure you're no disco fan, but within it's genre, that's a perfect song. I like WZ's version too, though. Actually, I've been known to listen to some BeeGees now and then, and used to know how to do the Electric Slide.
Guest J0bber Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Other great cover songs that I'm suprised no one has mentioned: Â -Orgy "Blue Monday" -Fear Factory "Cars" -Fear Factory "I Will Follow" -Marilyn Manson "Personal Jesus" -Ministry "Lay Lady Lay" -Dope "F*** tha Police" -Dope "People are People" -Dope "You Spin Me Round" -Type O Negative "Summer Breeze" Â Can you tell I'm an industrial metal addict?
Special K Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 "Sweet Jane" and "Superstar" were what I first thought of. Boogieman's a pretty good choice too. Â Scissor Sister's cover of "Comfortably Numb" is really quite bad, but it cracked me up. Â Ween's "LMLYP" covering Shockadelica is pretty swell.
Nighthawk Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Marilyn Manson is very good at covers, but that's something I've said a lot of times before, so I didn't. "I Put a Spell On You" was probably his best one. He does some live covers that are awful, though.
Murmuring Beast Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Various Chuck Berry songs were vastly improved on.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 His "Roll over Beethoven" is superior to The Beatles' version.
Ravenbomb Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 "I Fought the Law" by the Clash "War Pigs" by Faith No More "Come Together" by Aerosmith "In My Life" by Johnny Cash "Hurt" by Johnny Cash "Mad World" by Gary Jules "Silver and Gold" by Joe Strummer "Gloria" by Patti Smith
Guest Temet Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Jeff Buckley, 'Hallelujah' The Futureheads, 'Hounds of Love' Hendrix, 'All Along The Watchtower'.
