theintensifier Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 I've been talking with some of my friends around here on Camp Lejeune. It's made me think, a lot of movies I have had high expectations for, have been really, really shitty. So, I thought this would be an interesting topic of discussion. If you could redo, or re-make ANY movie, ever, past or present, which movie would it be, and why ? What kind of changes would you make ?
razazteca Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Ang Lee's Hulk, I would get rid of the Nick Nolte role.
BlackFlagg Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Excalibur, so much potential, if remade with the proper cast and director it could be an Epic movie on the level of Braveheart/Gladiator/etc..
Hawk 34 Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Pearl Harbor. A event like that deserved something better then a made-up cheesy love-triangle.
Dr. Zaius Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 I agree with everything you guys have said on this thread so far. My own contribution? "Magnolia"...now 100% frog-free.
Corey_Lazarus Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Hrmmm...this is a toughie. I'd probably remake White Zombie and keep the plot, but add more gore, profanity, and some minor nudity (done very tastefully). I even have a cast in mind... {Character......Actor (Original Actor) - Role Actor's Best Known For} Neil......Valentine Miele (John Harron) - Murray in Tromeo & Juliet Madeleine......Katherine Isabelle (Madge Bellamy) - Ginger in the Ginger Snaps trilogy Beaumont......Christian Bale (Robert Frazer) - Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins Dr. Bruner......Bill Moseley (Joseph Cawthorn) - Otis in The Devil's Rejects "Murder" Legendre......Morgan Freeman (Bela Lugosi) - IT'S MORGAN FUCKING FREEMAN, AND YES I THINK HE COULD PULL IT OFF Of course, the soundtrack would feature a lot of stuff by Zombi and a few White Zombie tracks for the opening credits and some scenes before the horror starts (I'm thinking "I, Zombie" and "Blood, Milk, And Sky"), and some original stuff written for the movie.
theintensifier Posted March 20, 2006 Author Report Posted March 20, 2006 All excellent choices. I'd personally redo the ENTIRE Resident Evil series. I'm a HUGE fan of survival horror, and would make it mirror the game so much more, and then add in some realism. Come to think about it, there's a ton of movies, within the last few years, that I've said I'd redo if I could, like: |Freddy vs. Jason| Had potential to be amazing, come up way short though. Not enough actual horror, there were parts that I laughed out loud at, and it was more a comedy than a horror flick. |Aliens vs. Predator| The fear of Aliens, and the Predators weren't there. It was so non-existant my 65 year old Aunt said the Predator seemed like a "nice fellow". Seriously. AND, it was only PG-13. |Bourne Supremacy| Jason Bourne's girl dies WAY too early, and in a pointless death / scene. Plus, Jason never really gets revenge the way a man should get revenge for someone killing his woman and stalking him. He should have had a HUGE fight scene, hand to hand combat, plenty of joint breaks, blood, and cursing. Also, he should have open fired with that .50 cal sniper rifle while he was on the roof, he'd be living up to his threat / promise in the first flim. |Saw II| The first Saw was amazing in a dark and twisted way. The second wasn't. It just sucked. I'd redo the entire movie, remove most of the cast, show what happend to Dr. Gordon, etc.
Youth N Asia Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Unbreakable...good idea, good leads, yet a boring damn movie.
theintensifier Posted March 21, 2006 Author Report Posted March 21, 2006 Posts: 2502219 Holy shit ! I'm assuming this is fake ? Also, what part of MI are you from ? I agree, Unbreakable could have been good, but, it wasn't.
Youth N Asia Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'm at a legig 17K post count, but when I asked where 12k of them went a while back they gimmicked my number, I'd rather have the real one. Born in Pontiac, living in Flint
theintensifier Posted March 21, 2006 Author Report Posted March 21, 2006 Yeah, I was going to say...... Both nice cities, I've enjoyed spending time in both. Have you ever ventured up north to Grayling, or Gaylord ?
Big Ol' Smitty Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I would make an updated Escape from Sobibor. Seriously.
Corey_Lazarus Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd personally redo the ENTIRE Resident Evil series. I'm a HUGE fan of survival horror, and would make it mirror the game so much more, and then add in some realism. I concur that it should be closer to the games, but it shouldn't be the plot of the games entirely. I remember reading Romero's script for it, and it was a decent spin on the game with 2 added characters to the team that were pretty much fodder anyway but there for some added depth (sorta like how the Dawn '04 crew had the rule "taking what you're familiar with and adding a little twist to it," ya know) to the main characters. The studio said it focused too heavily on zombies, though, and then...the fucking movie was all zombies save for one Licker. That sorta peeved me, especially since the relationship between Jill and Barry was damn solid in the game, as was Wesker's true motives. |Freddy vs. Jason| Had potential to be amazing, come up way short though. Not enough actual horror, there were parts that I laughed out loud at, and it was more a comedy than a horror flick. I dunno, I loved how it was more of a comedy than a horror. So were the series that it was paying homage to. The only scary ones in either series were the first ones, and even then those don't really hold up too well today in terms of scare-factor (few horror movies do, and slashers RARELY hold up after even 5 years), while the majority of the sequels were gory camp. That's exactly what FVJ was: gory camp. It was everything the fanbases loved about each one (Freddy's one-liners, Jason's brutal-yet-simple kills, lame main characters that can't keep their pants on, hard rock soundtrack, reinvention about each character's boystory...okay, that last part isn't something the fanbases LOVE, but it's consistent with the prior sequels). |Aliens vs. Predator| The fear of Aliens, and the Predators weren't there. It was so non-existant my 65 year old Aunt said the Predator seemed like a "nice fellow". Seriously. AND, it was only PG-13. Eh...to be fair, the Predator aligning itself with the woman was a part of the AVP comic Dark Horse put out in the late 80's/early 90's. I dug how they had Lance Henriksen play the Weyland-Yutani Company's patriarch, Bishop Weyland, since both Bishop droids were modeled to look like the company's founder. It should've taken place in the future, though, but maybe the not-too-distant of a future so as to be a good balance between the two series (since the Alien series takes place some 200 or 300 years in the future, whereas the Predator films take place modern-day). The PG-13 rating was fucking lame, as was the barely 90-minute runtime (since each Alien film is over 2 hours long, allowing for some decent character development so that when somebody gets off'd you actually feel for them), but hey: Anderson's a fuckhead. His best movie, Event Horizon, was gory, atmospheric, and over 2 hours long, but I suppose he doesn't care about quality, and just cares about the bling-bling. |Saw II| The first Saw was amazing in a dark and twisted way. The second wasn't. It just sucked. I'd redo the entire movie, remove most of the cast, show what happend to Dr. Gordon, etc. I actually dug the second one more than the first. A lot more predictable, but I liked hearing Jigsaw fuck with the detective face-to-face more than I did two guys arguing with a tape recorder playing.
The Metal Maniac Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd probably do Night of the Hunter, because I just don't like the style of movies that old. I dunno, something about the acting kinda bugs me...but I still think it's a really good movie. Be interesting to see it with a more modern style, I think.
cabbageboy Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 If I redid Night of the Hunter I'd get rid of that ultra weak ending it had (as in Lillian Gish rambling about kids and stuff, Mitchum being moved to another jail to avoid a lynch mob). I'd redo The Deer Hunter. I've always thought there was a really solid 2 hour movie in that 3 hour mess somewhere. Cut out quite a bit of that ultra slow and dull first hour, focus a bit more on Nam and the relationships of the guys there, maybe a bit on the training and why they were in the same unit. I'd also move the scene with De Niro hunting the deer to the very last scene....it just seems somehow more powerful that way.
Special K Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Night of the Hunter is a very good idea. I'd do "Thou Shalt not Kill... Except", aka "Stryker's War", a movie made by Bruce Campbell, Raimi and co. For some weird SAG technicality, Bruce couldn't star in it. It's got tons of hilarious moments.
spman Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I would remake Rocky IV and have Drago win. The ending would be a look intu the future where the Soviets won the Cold War.
The Czech Republic Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Pinko bastard. There's no place for you here.
Art Sandusky Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Manos: The Hands of Fate. Seriously. Give this shit a proper budget and crew and you'll have some fuckin' magic.
muzz Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Crazy. I don't know of anyone who could pull off the role of Torgo.
Art Sandusky Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 If Cuba Gooding Jr. can do Radio, we can find a Torgo. 'Sides, he'd have the proper goat's legs so you'll only need to find someone who can emulate Torgo's upper body.
Guest guerillagenius Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd do All Quiet On The Western Front, it was made in 1945 and won Best Picture, but it could have been a lot darker and much more emotional. They weren't able to do the story justice back then.
spiny norman Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd redo The Deer Hunter. I've always thought there was a really solid 2 hour movie in that 3 hour mess somewhere. I'd also move the scene with De Niro hunting the deer to the very last scene....it just seems somehow more powerful that way. No way. The Deer Hunter's near-perfect as is. The final scene is fantastic and certainly ultimately the most powerful way to end the film. Ending with De Niro hunting the deer...it'd seem forced, to me. I'd do All Quiet On The Western Front, it was made in 1945 and won Best Picture, but it could have been a lot darker and much more emotional. They weren't able to do the story justice back then. It was made in 1930, and was remade in 1979, and that version was pretty average. If you're going to remake something, it can't be so great as half the stuff being named here. Take something good in theory but terrible in execution and remake that. Don't remake Night of the Hunter (though I see the argument) or The Deer Hunter or All Quiet on the Western Front or Magnolia. The only remakes of classics I can think of to pull it off was de Palma's Scarface and Wyler's Ben-Hur. Pretty much all the rest is bullshit, and best left untouched.
Kaertos Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I know that this will be a weird selection, but I've always felt that Krull could be a good movie if it weren't so, well, bad. My wife is a big fan of this movie, but even she says it is bad and she'd like to see it remade as a good movie with decent effects and a cast that isn't straight from a high school production.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd redo Ran, with Alan Alda as Hideyoshi, and the Three Stooges as his sons. Also, there'd be Benny Hill Music during the battles, and The William Tell Overture when Hideyoshi's running through the wilderness.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'd redo the original Dracula so it's more like the Spanish version, which, if you haven't seen, is better in almost every way other than it doesn't have Lugosi. Also, Deer Hunter desperately needs part of it's first hour cut, but I hate that movie so I wouldn't remake it. I'd also see about making the real Game of Death, not that horrible mess it got turned into
The Czech Republic Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Manos: The Hands of Fate. Seriously. Give this shit a proper budget and crew and you'll have some fuckin' magic. You know, I've thought this, but to do a good Manos would kind of take the magic out of the original.

Hey don't tell me what I can or cannot remake! I haven't seen the 1979 version, but if you've seen the 1930 version and have read the book then you know they left out a ton of good stuff that was probably too dark and graphic for that time.
