Darthtiki Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Hopefully we get some more special features from the vaults.
pochorenella Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 I'm holding out for the super-duper edition where you can actually feel the flesh and bone tear as Vader's saber lops off Luke's hand... Hey, I want that edition! When is it coming out?
Black Lushus Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 I'm holding out for the super-duper edition where you can actually feel the flesh and bone tear as Vader's saber lops off Luke's hand... Hey, I want that edition! When is it coming out? HAHA you KNOW it's coming someday! that version of ANH where you can feel Vader's breath beating on your neck just like Leia as he stood behind her on the Death Star!
Anakin Flair Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Give the man a break. He's living the American dream. Maybe I'll pick these up, maybe not. Time will tell.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 This is why I never bought the shitacular special edition versions.
Art Sandusky Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Lucas didn't figure on people like me who don't mind using VCRs.
Guest Askewniverse Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I never had a problem with the Special Edition versions. I didn't like some of the minor changes, but not enough to constantly bitch and whine about them. I bought the 2004 set on release day and I'll do the same for the upcoming DVDs. I'll probably watch the SE versions most of the time, but it will be nice to be able to watch the original versions if I want to, without resorting to my aging, pan-and-scan VHS copies. How "limited" will this set be? Because if it truly is "limited" I WILL buy it... and then resell it on eBay. The DVDs will be released in September and discontinued at the end of the year. As of right now, the upcoming DVDs won't be available in a box set. Each movie will be sold separately. Each movie will be a 2-disc set - one disc for the original theatrical version and one disc for the existing 2004 Special Edition version. The eBay thing probably isn't worth it in the long run. There is bound to be a ton of people with that same idea.
SuperJerk Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I have no problem with the SEs, and in many ways prefer them (a lot of the special effects in the battles have been cleaned up, I always hated how the Snowspeeders were transparent in the original). I'm likely going to pass on them, unless I get some sort of urge to go out and get them when they are released. Personally, I think those that despise the SEs and love the Originals have too much time on their hands as the changes are very minor and don't affect the story or plot at all. The changes didn't ruin the movies, but many parts did decrease my enjoyment of them. For instance, I liked the fact that Biggs was added to ANH, but a couple of pretty neat model effects shots were taken out for no reason. There were also some pretty non-sensical changes made that, I feel, hurt the films. The SE were still solid movies, mind you, but did lack some of the charm of the original versions.
Sideburnious Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I'm still gonna hold out. I just know eventually he's going to bring out an "ultimate" edition with the orginal 3 unedited, the (new) original 3 edited, episodes 1-3 and about 10 bonus disks with special features and fan shit on them.
luke-o Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Im gonna buy them. I AM a hopeless fanboy... Even though i have the orginals 5 times on VCR. Im still gonna buy them. I AM a tool...
SuperJerk Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 I have no trouble buying these again, since there are second-hand video stores I can trade my old ones into. I bought the special edition DVD 2 years ago, and I got to enjoy them for those 2 years. I don't mind trading these in and getting a different version, considering the set 2 years ago really wasn't that expensive.
NoCalMike Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 If I recall correctly. There was a box set where the special effects were updated and cleaned up, but nothing else was changed. That is what I want on DVD.
BlackFlagg Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 If I recall correctly. There was a box set where the special effects were updated and cleaned up, but nothing else was changed. That is what I want on DVD. I would imagine that'd be the set released after the movies were re-released into the theaters<the first time, I believe for the 20th Anniversary>
Masked Man of Mystery Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I believe those were put ut in '95 or '96, I have them plus the '98 special editions. I didn't get these DVDs, but I'll definately get these new discs
AboveAverage484 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Now the goal is who can sell the old ones on amazon/ebay before the rubes realize this new set is coming out?
notJames Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I'm still gonna hold out. I just know eventually he's going to bring out an "ultimate" edition with the orginal 3 unedited, the (new) original 3 edited, episodes 1-3 and about 10 bonus disks with special features and fan shit on them. Same here. And even if this never comes out, I can still go back and buy the two trilogies from somewhere in the universe. Thank god I don't ever buy anything as soon as it comes out.
Art Sandusky Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 If I recall correctly. There was a box set where the special effects were updated and cleaned up, but nothing else was changed. That is what I want on DVD. You're thinking of the VHS set that came out in 1995. The selling point there was that the entire trilogy had been THX-ified and the film restored. The prior video releases were the crap 80s VHS editions that didn't have the framing formatted for televisions. Shortly after that came out, it was announced that the trilogy would be back in theatres for the 20th anniversary, and those are the Special Editions.
Guest El Satanico Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 If I recall correctly. There was a box set where the special effects were updated and cleaned up, but nothing else was changed. That is what I want on DVD. You're thinking of the VHS set that came out in 1995. The selling point there was that the entire trilogy had been THX-ified and the film restored. I think that's the set I have. It came in Widescreen (silver box) or Fullscreen (gold box), and I preordered a Widescreen set. I've never opened it, and now since it's VHS i probably never will.
Art Sandusky Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 The special editions came in the gold/silver boxes. The '95 release was fullscreen only, as far as I know. It was the one that had Vader on the Star Wars box, a stormtrooper on the Empire Strikes Back box, and Yoda on the Return of the Jedi box. This is what I'm talking about:
The Metal Maniac Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I have that set, and the SE Fullscreen set. And for the record, that set does say on it that it is the LAST video release of Star Wars in it's original form. So it's not like Lucas didn't warn ya.
Anakin Flair Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 My sister had that set, and I copied it onto on VHS tape. That got passed onto my cousin when I got the Widescreen Special Edition that came out later, which got passed onto my best friend when I got the DVD's. Damn. Never thought about how many times I've gotten the OT before now.
Guest Retro Rob Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 This cracks me up. For two years, all I hear is that people want the original trilogy in the pre special edition format released on DVD. Then he announces it and most of the responses fall into one of two categories: 1.) Greedy Lucas is out for more cash. 2.) I'm not buying them becuase I already bought the previous DVD set. Poor guy can't win for losing. He finally does what fans have been begging him to do and, in general, the reaction is mosty "I don't want them and I don't care." If the guy really wanted to make EVERYONE happy, he would have released both sets simultaneously.
SuperJerk Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 The special editions came in the gold/silver boxes. The '95 release was fullscreen only, as far as I know. It was the one that had Vader on the Star Wars box, a stormtrooper on the Empire Strikes Back box, and Yoda on the Return of the Jedi box. This is what I'm talking about: He's right. Those were the last time the original trilogy was for sale in its original form and they were NOT released in widescreen.
Black Lushus Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 here's what I have: -Original VHS versions of the OT -that set Kotz has a pic of -collector's boxset of the SE OT on VHS -Phantom Menace on VHS -the NT on DVD -the most recent SE OT on DVD set. I do not need more.

My best friend's brother had it. The box had Vader's face on it, and the tapes were packaged side-to-side. There were two versions of the box - a slide-out version and a flip-top version. EDIT: pics of the '95 WS VHS set.

My wife bought it for me when we started dating many moons ago, in a galaxy yadda yadda yadda. My 4-year-old son loves them.
