Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Boston's about to beat Tampa Bay on the strength of Big Papi's 2 HR and 6 RBI taking his season totals to 29 & 82. I wonder if he'll get the MVP this year or if a random Yankee like Giambi will because he plays the field. Funny you mention Giambi, who's totals are 26 and 68, and has a higher OBP, SLG, and OPS than David Ortiz. So if he wins it, not really a mistake there. Not that it was a mistake last year either, anyway.

vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I'm not trying to be a dick, but how many times has Capuano gotten a complete game shutout against the Cubs this season? It seems like every time he pitches against the Cubs he gets one. Kinda like Chris Carpenter against the 'Stros last year. I suspect that Roy Oswalt will be getting Pedro's spot on the All-Star team. He's got a 6-5 record, but he should really have about 9 wins. His last three starts, he's pitched 25 innings and given up 6 runs. The White Sox game, the bullpen blew it. His last two starts have been complete game losses, 3-1 and 1-0. I really hope Roy gets 20 wins this season, but it's not looking good. I predict a wild weekend series for the 'Stros and the Cards. Tonite's game got a little heated with Molina getting hit (unitentionally) in the coconut. It was terrible to watch. He was on first base and wandering down the right field line and over to the stands. He was just out of it. Then Lance "Big Puma" Berkman got hit, probably unintentionally. Then there was this weird balk call that came during a timeout that saw a heated exchange between Orlando Palmiero and Aaron Miles. Then Chris Burke popped up a bunt and Gary Bennet about shoulder tackled him down trying to make a Superman play on it. Either way, it was a good game and a good win. Taylo "Buckles" Buchholz looked impressive and Berkman has a friggin' cannon.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Capuano has three starts against the Cubs this season. His ERA against them: 0.00. He's got two CG shutouts and went eight scoreless last week. He was only lifted because of the pitch count and that he gave up a lead-off single in the ninth of a six-run game. His ERA against other teams this year is almost 4.00, so if he'd gotten the final All-Star spot, he'd have the Cubs to thank for that. Again, I'm thankful I don't have access to the Extra Innings package this week, because I know I'd torture myself by watching these games. This way, it's easier to pull for them to lose in hopes that Dusty and his crew aren't back in the second half.

Pretty sure Pelfrey pitches in game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader. In other Mets news, Henry Owens got called up from Binghampton where he’s been striking guys out at an insane rate all season. He struck out 51 batters in 25 innings while walking only 8. His fastball has apparently touched 100 mph a few times. I think he was a Rule 5 pickup from Pittsburgh while Duquette was running things, but I could be wrong. Either way, I’m happy to see him get a chance. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I was at Miller Park last night, and it was glorious. Not nearly as many Cubbie fans as usual, and my wife and I both got free "Take Back Miller Park" t-shirts. I stood up and clapped sarcastically when they announced Dusty Baker's name, much to the chagrin of a couple nearby Cubs fans. Also, I love how the Cubs fans will get excited on routine flyouts which would be home runs in the minor league ballpark that is Wrigley Field. Capuano now has 10 wins...he really should be on the All Star team if any opportunity arises. I'm sure Garner will be pressured to pick Oswalt or someone else on his team, though. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I don't think Garner will be pressured to take Roy. I think Roy deserves it based on his numbers. He's near tops in the NL based on his numbers excluding wins, which aren't really fair to gauge a pitcher on. It's not his fault that the bullpen has an ERA of 9.00 in his starts. Hell, he's even decided that the only way to not have the bullpen to blow your game is to throw a complete game, but when he does that, the offense can't score anything. I think it also helps that he's on the Astros. But at least he's not on the White Sox. In any event, I wouldn't be surprised if Capuano gets in anyway. Alot of the pitchers on the NL team have to pitch this Sunday and won't be available to pitch in the game, so if Capuano's rested, there's a chance he'll get on the team. In other Astros/Brewers news, the pitching match-up for this Sunday's Round Rock Express vs the Brewer's AAA Nashville affiliate...Brandon Backe vs. Ben Sheets. I bet the game's a sell-out. USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 You act like Backe's a draw. He's not even that good of a pitcher.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I live in Houston, and I promise you Backe is a draw. And the goodness of his pitching certainly can be argued either way. He's had some struggles in the regular season, but he's not pitched overly bad. But he's been lights out in the post-season, namely in 2004 against the Cards and this past year in the WS in Game 4 where he struck out 7 Sox in a row and allowed 1 or 2 hits over 7 innings. But, yeah, in Houston and surrounding areas...Backe's a bigtime draw.

TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Magglio Ordonez replaces Ramirez on the AL All Star roster. Guest Smues Report post Posted July 8, 2006 > 7.6.06 - Paul DePodesta Paul DePodesta signed Eric Gagne to a $19 million contract in January of 2005. Since Gagne is likely undergoing season-ending back surgery, and the Dodgers figure to buy out the option year on Gagne's contract for $1 million, we now know what the Dodgers got for their $20 million investment: EIGHT SAVES. Since you didn't graduate high school, allow us to do the math: $2.5 million per save. Not quite the $6 million the Dodgers paid Darren Dreifort per win, but impressive nonetheless. Mussina showed Cito up. He was never going into the game. I think this may be the point where I decide that the Jays just don't have it this year. When you can't do any better than split against the Royals, you're in trouble.
