Suddenly my pick for the 2009 USA team doesn't look too shabby. And the AL? Everyone (and I agree) says it's pretty much Liriano's to lose right now with Verlander and Papelbon close behind. It's hard to say. I think Sheffield's overall skills outside of his hitting are far diminished. The Yanks are better served letting him walk. What went wrong for the Indians this year? Do you see the manager surviving for next year? I think the Indians overperformed last year and came back to earth. Eric Wedge will have another year I think. They loved him last year, but being under .500 this season has a lot of people calling for his head. Seems like it's more a case of the talent still developing and the pitching just not being there. Sheffield's always been a bad apple in his contract year. I think he'll fall in line though. He's vocal but otherwise not a troublemaker. Do you think it's fair that people have been so critical of Wedge? They loved him last year, but being under .500 this season has a lot of people calling for his head. Seems like it's more a case of the talent still developing and the pitching just not being there. The manager is always the scapegoat. Most of the time, he's not the problem. They give the Blue Jays about a 4% chance of the division, and 5% at the wild card, for 9% overall. That sounds low, but it is a shot. As long as they have a chance, sit back and enjoy the race. I don't recall something like it in my recollection, though I'm sure it's happened before. Keep in mind though these pitchers are still performing a bit above expectations. They could tail off a bit. Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2006 On Sheff, he came out and said he was psyched about the deal because it gave them a better shot at winning rings. He also said he just wants to come back healthy, and will do anything Torre asks him to do, including playing first or third. Typical Sheff, everyone expects him to do one thing so he does the opposite I'm not sure what to expect next year. I doubt the Yankees will pick up his $13 mil option, but I'm sure they'd take him back at roughly half of that. Would Sheff accept that? Probably depends on what other teams are offering. I'm not so sure he could command much better than that on the open market. He's 38, diminished in the field, bad reputation and whispers of steroid use, plus he's coming off a lingering injury.
