EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Pat Gillick in a radio interview today stated the need to get guys who "get on base." Well gee Pat, where could we find such a player?

Bored Posted August 11, 2006 Author Report Posted August 11, 2006 Going to the A's/Devil Rays game tonight, Haren vs. Kazmir.
Vern Gagne Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Didn't Pat Gillick used to be a good GM?
tominator89 Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Didn't Pat Gillick used to be a good GM? I don't blame Gillick. It's the ownership's fault. We've changed managers, GMs, traded All-Star players, but the owners are the only constant.
Annabelle Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Going to the A's/Devil Rays game tonight, Haren vs. Kazmir. thats a great match-up. haren showed signs of brilliance last season, but lately he's shown the sort of promise that rich harden was supposed to be. he'll help the sting of losing zito.
vivalaultra Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Yet people around here are still talking about the wildcard race, when they're still 6 games below .500. It's like, let's get to at least an even record before we even think about the playoffs, guys. WHOOOO-EE LOOKIT THEM THERE ASTROS!!!! It's hard to play when you think you're out of the race. It's hard to play without a purpose or a cause. Until you're mathematically eliminated, you're not out of the race. I check the scoreboard and standings every day. We're a ways behind, but who says we're out of the race? Oooooh....sassy.
vivalaultra Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Andy Pettitte just hit a 367 foot homerun to right field off of Chan Ho Park. That's just ridiculous. Now Clemens and Backe have to hit homeruns in their next starts.
Vern Gagne Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Not a very good first outing for Matt Garza 2.2 IP 8 Hits 7 r 7 er 2BB 2K
naiwf Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Tonight's Mets game was really frustrating. And on a completely unrelated note, just as I was flipping down to ESPN I caught an "A-Rod special". He's now tied with Sheff for #30 all-time in HR.

Now Clemens and Backe have to hit homeruns in their next starts. I was going to ask if Roger Clemens has ever hit a homer, but I looked it up myself - he hasn't. He does have a few doubles though. Looks like he never did record that stolen base he said he wanted at the beginning of the '05 season.
Spaceman Spiff Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Hey, Pat Gillick was on our flight from Philly to Chicago for our baseball trip (don't know why he was flying to Chicago, since the team was in StL). Dude was across the aisle, 1 row up from us. Got bumped up to 1st class after a bit, though.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Hey, Pat Gillick was on our flight from Philly to Chicago for our baseball trip (don't know why he was flying to Chicago, since the team was in StL). Dude was across the aisle, 1 row up from us. Got bumped up to 1st class after a bit, though. Ed Wade was a common sight at Red Barons games. I've also seen John Vuckovich and Dallas Green there from time to time. Phils vs. Ryan Franklin. There's no reason we should lose this game.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 I've complained about the use of the 13 man pitching staff before. This game is a prime example. We have eight pitchers available, leaving just four bench players. Here's the problem. 1. Pat Burrell requires a defensive replacement. Manager Charlie Manuel exacerbates the problem by double switching and putting the pitcher in the fifth slot, behind Ryan Howard. 2. With just Danny Sandoval left, the Reds intentionally walk Ryan Howard into the ninth inning. Sandoval grounds into the DP on the first pitch. 3. 12th inning. The Reds intentionally walk Ryan Howard again, moving the winning run into scoring position. With no bench players left, the Phils are forced to use Randy Wolf as a pinch hitter. The Phils again fail to score. So the Phils have eight relievers. All it's done tonight is take the bat out of their best hitter's hands. You need bench players.
Longdogger_Pete Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 At one point last week (just before we called up Corky Miller as an emergency catcher), the Red Sox had 13 men on the pitching staff... a fact that became painfully obvious when Lowell was held out of the lineup and Mirabelli got hurt and missed a few days, leaving us with precisely one bench player (Kapler) remaining.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 And now Eric Milton is hitting for the Reds. I hope managers love these rosters because it's absolute shit for the fans.
vivalaultra Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 WHOOOO-EE LOOKIT THEM THERE ASTROS!!!! Yeah...they won.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Tonight's Mets game was really frustrating. Hawk 34 Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Hollandsworth making that catch reminded me of that scene from that Angels In The Outfield movie.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 I'd be more worried about Griffey if his season OPS were higher than .782. He's just not a superstar anymore.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Bottom of the 14th. The Reds are using tomorrow night's starter against Dellucci, Utley and Howard. After that Aaron Fultz is due up.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Yet ANOTHER intentional walk. Aaron Fultz will bat with no outs and the bases loaded.
Guest Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 1.5 games in front of the pack. It would be nice if the Dodgers could take this momentum and use it to pull away.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 I haven't checked, but I have to think the 43 players combined used by the Reds and Phillies last night is a new MLB record.
