Mets fans stayed after the game celebrating for a couple of hours, the Mets came back out on the field an hour after the game to celebrate with the fans, apparently there was champagne and cigars a-plenty.....and people were calling up WFAN like they were celebrating the end of a 100 year championship drought. It was the fucking division which you've basically had clinched for two months. Ease up on that shit. It's going to look real dumb when you get bounced in the NLCS. As a Yankees fan, try to remember how over the top the 1996 Yankees and their fans were in their celebrations every step of the way considering they'd won jack and shit in the previous 15 seasons. Just to put it in terms everyone can understand, a kid who was born the last time the Mets won the division is either a HS senior or a freshman in college now. The Tigers have struggled lately, but it looks like they'll make it to the postseason at the very least. -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have lost eight straight, stealing last place in baseball from the Kansas City Royals. The Devil Rays are now 57-93 and in serious danger of losing 100 games for the third time in franchise history. For a team with so much young talent, this is not a good step. This is also why I disagree with some statiscians who say you should simply play the youngsters over veterans, on the theory that you're not going to win anyway. You need to make an effort to at least stay competitive from year to year. -Triple A baseball's farcecal playoffs come to an end tonight with a one game playoff between the IL and PCL champions. Notable players include Jeff Bajenaru (Sabr member and minor league closer), Mike Bacsik, Micah Owings, Donnie Sadler and Josh Phelps. The problem is that MLB rapes the AAA rosters every year on September 1st for roster expansion, leaving teams to cover the rest of the season and postseason with a mix of AAA and AA players. TEN of the Red Barons' best players were absent from our playoff roster. The effect is obvious. Far less fans attended the postseason games than did the regular season. -The effect of the wild card is that it is supposed to increase pennant races. With 13 days left, only one team not currently leading for a playoff slot (the Phillies) has better than a 20:1 shot at the playoffs, according to Baseball Prospectus. Now let's assume we switched back to a two division format. The Yankees would lead the Tigers by one game. Minnesota would lead Oakland by just two games. The Dodgers would lead the Padres by half a game, with no wild card to fall back on. Now call me crazy, but doesn't the second scenario seem to have a little more to offer the serious baseball fan? It certainly helps to make baseball more interesting going into the stretch (usually). It helps to make it more competitive and give more fans a reason to root for their teams all the way to the end of the season. However, it does alot to ruin minor league baseball with the Sept. callups, and it can conflict with the trade deadline. And it allows for sometimes weaker teams to make it into the postseason. I don't like the idea of reverting to a two-division system. I mean...the Braves in the NL West? Yeesh... What really grinds my gears is Interleauge Play...Yeah... I think it makes the postseason less exciting when there are more rounds, and weaker teams tend to creep in. The last time the team with the most wins in MLB won a World Championship was 1989. I also like interleague play. I don't see why so many ppl gripe about it. I mean there's 162 games in a season. The other 3 major sports have it so why can't baseball? I think every fan should get the chance to see their favorite players and teams, etc... in their home ballpark during their lifetime. That's better than playing the same team ~20 times a year. I generally like the wild card, and think it's been beneficial to creating pennant races more often than not. This year's awful National League has kind of ruined this aspect, but we've had good wild card chases in other years. I think eight teams after 162 games is a perfect balance, as the NHL and NBA's 82-game seasons allow 16 teams, twice as many since they've had half the time to justify their placement. Now what is gonna be bad is if the aforementioned AL expansion leads to four divisions of four like the NFL, in which you have to invent new divisions once again by culling teams from elsewhere.
