Guest Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 WHAT THE FUCK I changed the channel at the end of the Padre half of the 9th inning. Fucking shit. I was fed up and didn't want to see anymore.
Bored Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 I just saw the highlights, unreal. ESPN has to put that game on ESPN Classic as an Instant Classic by the end of this week. First time in 42 years that a team has hit four consecutive homeruns.
Kurt Angle Mark Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 WHAT THE FUCK I changed the channel at the end of the Padre half of the 9th inning. Fucking shit. I was fed up and didn't want to see anymore. My brother and I did the same thing. However my brother decided to check one last time before going to bed and the score was tied in the 10th. We couldn't believe it and then we saw on the net how they did it and we coudn't believe we missed it.
Guest Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Saw the highlights on SC. That gave me the chills. The Martin HR is in here twice, but who cares. I've never seen a crowd lose it like that in my whole life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSNV2cQanlU
Guest NYankees Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Is Trevor Hoffman still a great closer?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Is Trevor Hoffman still a great closer? Of course. Those were the first runs Hoffman allowed since July 27th.

Open the Muggy Gate Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Charlie's call on radio is just CLASSIC stuff. He's losing his mind and loving it. That was something truly special last night.

I've never seen a crowd lose it like that in my whole life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSNV2cQanlU Thanks for posting that. That's the greatest crowd reaction I've ever seen for a regular-season game. Nice to hear Vin Scully calling it, too.
naiwf Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Is Trevor Hoffman still a great closer? It was a non-save situation. As you know, closers don't succeed in that kind of environment.

Uh *flips through closer's cliche manual*. . . he didn't come in to start the inning. As you know, closers don't succeed in that kind of environment.

Great, I'll have to avoid his show on XM now for the rest of the season since he'll never shut up about it.
Precious Roy Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Congrats to the Mets, but I think they might have gone a little over the top in their celebration. Mets fans stayed after the game celebrating for a couple of hours, the Mets came back out on the field an hour after the game to celebrate with the fans, apparently there was champagne and cigars a-plenty.....and people were calling up WFAN like they were celebrating the end of a 100 year championship drought. It was the fucking division which you've basically had clinched for two months. Ease up on that shit. It's going to look real dumb when you get bounced in the NLCS.

As a Yankees fan, try to remember how over the top the 1996 Yankees and their fans were in their celebrations every step of the way considering they'd won jack and shit in the previous 15 seasons. Just to put it in terms everyone can understand, a kid who was born the last time the Mets won the division is either a HS senior or a freshman in college now. It's not like they did this shit a year after winning the WS.

To be fair, the Yankees are making their 12th straight postseason while the Mets are making their 7th post season trip in their organizations history.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Random Notes: -The Detroit Tigers won last night against the Chicago White Sox, giving them a six game advantage on the playoffs. The Tigers have struggled lately, but it looks like they'll make it to the postseason at the very least. -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have lost eight straight, stealing last place in baseball from the Kansas City Royals. The Devil Rays are now 57-93 and in serious danger of losing 100 games for the third time in franchise history. For a team with so much young talent, this is not a good step. This is also why I disagree with some statiscians who say you should simply play the youngsters over veterans, on the theory that you're not going to win anyway. You need to make an effort to at least stay competitive from year to year. -Triple A baseball's farcecal playoffs come to an end tonight with a one game playoff between the IL and PCL champions. Notable players include Jeff Bajenaru (Sabr member and minor league closer), Mike Bacsik, Micah Owings, Donnie Sadler and Josh Phelps. The problem is that MLB rapes the AAA rosters every year on September 1st for roster expansion, leaving teams to cover the rest of the season and postseason with a mix of AAA and AA players. TEN of the Red Barons' best players were absent from our playoff roster. The effect is obvious. Far less fans attended the postseason games than did the regular season. -The effect of the wild card is that it is supposed to increase pennant races. With 13 days left, only one team not currently leading for a playoff slot (the Phillies) has better than a 20:1 shot at the playoffs, according to Baseball Prospectus. Now let's assume we switched back to a two division format. The Yankees would lead the Tigers by one game. Minnesota would lead Oakland by just two games. The Dodgers would lead the Padres by half a game, with no wild card to fall back on. Now call me crazy, but doesn't the second scenario seem to have a little more to offer the serious baseball fan? The only teams it would knock off the race are the Cards and Phillies.
vivalaultra Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 I like the Wildcard. I, however, can see both positive and negative aspects of it. It certainly helps to make baseball more interesting going into the stretch (usually). It helps to make it more competitive and give more fans a reason to root for their teams all the way to the end of the season. However, it does alot to ruin minor league baseball with the Sept. callups, and it can conflict with the trade deadline. And it allows for sometimes weaker teams to make it into the postseason. I don't like the idea of reverting to a two-division system. I mean...the Braves in the NL West? Yeesh... What really grinds my gears is Interleauge Play...Yeah...
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 The wild card is good in the short term but bad in the long term. I think it makes the postseason less exciting when there are more rounds, and weaker teams tend to creep in. The last time the team with the most wins in MLB won a World Championship was 1989. I think we've had some miserable World Series matchups the last few years, and the randomness of the playoffs has a lot to do with that.
Annabelle Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 the tigers wonder why they are slumping? they continue to field neifi perez & matt stairs in spite of having more talented younger stars on the bench. hey fuckers, if you won with marcus thames & omar infante, PLAY THEM.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Phils up 3-0 bottom 5, due to some sloppy 2-out play/pitching by the Cubs.
MFer Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I think the WC is great just because, especially this year, over half the teams had a chance as late as August. That creates more meaningful games. I also like interleague play. I don't see why so many ppl gripe about it. I mean there's 162 games in a season. The other 3 major sports have it so why can't baseball?
Guest Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I also hate interleague play. Should be the rivals, and that's it. For the teams that don't have the rivals, mix and match.
Guest Princess Leena Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I like interleague play, and think every MLB team should at least play a 2-game series with each other per year. I think every fan should get the chance to see their favorite players and teams, etc... in their home ballpark during their lifetime. That's better than playing the same team ~20 times a year. Plus, it would create a way around the unbalanced 16-14 league differential we have now.
Guest Felonies! Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Just don't say "go to 15 and 15." Besides, they'll probably add two teams to the AL in the next 10 years. I generally like the wild card, and think it's been beneficial to creating pennant races more often than not. This year's awful National League has kind of ruined this aspect, but we've had good wild card chases in other years. I think eight teams after 162 games is a perfect balance, as the NHL and NBA's 82-game seasons allow 16 teams, twice as many since they've had half the time to justify their placement. Now what is gonna be bad is if the aforementioned AL expansion leads to four divisions of four like the NFL, in which you have to invent new divisions once again by culling teams from elsewhere. I think that could really lead to some weak teams.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Jamie Moyer gets a small yet deserved ovation for an excellent pitching job tonight, 1 run in 7 IP. What a great pickup.
strummer Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Damn, I just noticed that Joe Girardi looks borderline anorexic.. What the hell happened to that short pudgy catcher that came up with the Cubs in the late 80s? Damn that Jeffrey Loria
