PlayStation 3

FFX-2 was so bad that the vast majority of gamers had no problem with it, and it got near universal critical acclaim. And FFXII really wasn't much different from the past games, and it also enjoyed critical success. Kind of a moot point really. A more pertinent point would be that the PS3's success will likely not be driven by one game. It'll take a handful of top-quality, exclusive titles to justify the price point.

Even then they've put die hard FF fans I know off the franchise with FF X-2 and FFXII. Would you buy a PS3 just to play FFXIII knowing how bad FF X-2 and how strangely different FF XII were?

My personal answer: no. Japan FF fans were extremely vocal about the change in FFXII's gameplay. Then they bought it anyway.

Yes, but this console generation, I think it'll be much harder to make blanket statements that will apply to all the markets. Sony can easily make up lost ground in Japan. For most folks it's going to be Wii or PS3 (or both perhaps at some point). In the other markets--the much larger European and North American markets, competition is a bit stiffer because the 360 is actually a factor. Of course, this is ruling out Lost Odyssey being a runaway hit that sells millions of 360s in Japan.

Apparently the ps3 is getting a special edition of the Spiderman 3 video game. Comes with a playable new Goblin, webisodes and a couple of interviews and a few other things.

Yeah it is, but its already been delayed in the UK (it was due out Friday coming) until an undisclosed time. This on the back of short stock on Oblivion and Splinter Cell people are getting fustrated at the lack of software available to play.

PS3 1.80 Firmware to upscale DVDs and PS2 games.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/welcome-tom...row-262852.php

The next big PS3 update hits tomorrow, bringing with it a slew of new functionality to Sony's big black console. At the top of the list (at least where I am concerned) is upscaling PlayStation and PS2 games as well as DVDs to full 1080p resolution. This could very well mean that my beloved PS2 could finally be hitting the closet.

Also included is Remote Play via the internet, allowing users to connect their PSP to their PS3 from anywhere in the world via broadband internet connection for some odd reason. Can't say I'd find this particularly useful.

Then there is support for streaming media from DLNA3 enabled devices (computers, laptops, etc.) directly to your PS3, which is of course nifty except I have a PC hooked up to my television already. Oh, and you can print photos from your PS3 to certain Epson printers, but odds are if you have an Epson printer you have a PC you print from anyway.

Despite the fact that I've got most of this covered, it really is a nice chunk of functionality Sony is adding to their machine with 1.80. Hit the jump for the press release, or simply wait til tomorrow and see for yourself. Michael Fahey

PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced

Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled

London, 24 May 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3's already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3's credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

IGN is reporting that Final Fantasy XIII (the real one) isn't going to make this fiscal year, i.e. it's hitting April 2008 or later.

Chances of KH2 Final Mix hitting NA just rose in my estimation.

OTOH, Metal Gear Solid 4 is expected to make it--so, it could come out anytime before end of March, an official delay notwithstanding.

So are there any good games coming out between now and the end of the year? I feel guilty not playing this thing I spent $600 on, heh.

Blu-rays are pretty at least. Sometimes.

There isn't much, especially if one already has an XBox 360. GTAIV and DMC4 appear to be the only big time games hitting this year, and they're both multi. Bladestorm and Assassin's Creed both look good, but again, they're coming out on the 360. Heavenly Sword will remain exclusive, but it's an unknown quantity at this point. Things are really lean for PS3 exclusives until FFXIII, MGS4 and GT5.

There's rumors Assassin's Creed may not make 2008. Haze is supposed to be a timed exclusive for 2007, and considering that was just confirmed at Ubidays I'd say it should stick.

Granted, you can't really blame Sony if 3rd party stuff doesn't make a target release period. Maybe they knew, maybe they were BSing.

It's more likely they just gave you the info they were told. It's not as if they told you a 1st party release was going to make it for a certain period and then pushed it back.....then pushed it back again...

You know, like some companies.

I don't think PS3 owners totally need exclusives. At this point surely they just want great games, and when those other games come it will be just gravy. How many people actually own a 360 *and* a PS3? They're pretty redundant consoles, and even Japan thinks so.

Play Tekken 5 DR.

Well duh, but it's a pretty bad one player game, heh.

I guess I'll get Assassin's Creed, but wow, this is going to be a really weak year if MGS4 doesn't hit until next year. PS2 got off to a slow start too, but nothing like this.

On a random note, Blast Factor is awesome.

You know you have like 2352 PS2 games to beat still, WTF.

Oh! Get that 36Oblivion!

"So what if there isn't anything good on PS3 coming out for a while! I don't really need to buy any PS3 games for a long time, as I've got such a huge backlog of PS2 titles already."

^^---I want to read/hear somebody say that some time and mean it earnestly.

Nah, when games sit on the backlog for too long I just give up on them and look for something new to play. :)

Heh I never even finished FF12. I have no attention span for RPGs anymore. :(

So now that the president of Sony has said that a price drop is a possibility, when does it come and how much? If the production costs have really dropped as the rumours say, they should just drop it $200, because I can see a ton of sales if they do that. But back in reality, I wouldn't be surprised if they make a measly $50 pricedrop, or maybe $100 if they've learned their lesson. And not until winter '07 either.

Well, the Blu Ray camp has been saying they want to get players into stores for Christmas time at around $299, so it would line up time wise with that.

At this point a $200 price point would reek of desperation.

They need to drop huge exclusive quality games and/or features. I mean, if this Home dealie is so snazzy, break it out!

Price drop around Winter time for sure, not to sound like an xbox fanboi but what else can Sony do to combat Halo3?

Ban plz.

Halo's importance is overrated. The GTA and Gran Turismo series are both bigger sellers. And while GTA is multi-platform now, GT is not.

TZ says that Tekken 5: DR is going to have online versus play soon. Even with lag, that is the greatest thing ever. The thought of it makes me giddy with happiness.
