Suicide Attempt,0181 Police: T.O. tried to kill himself Eds: Moving on general news and sports services. AP Photos By JAIME ARON AP Sports Writer DALLAS (AP) -- Flamboyant Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide by overdosing on pain medication, even putting two more pills into his mouth after fire rescue personnel arrived. A Dallas police report released Wednesday morning said Owens told rescue workers "that he was depressed." The report was first released by WFAA-TV. The rescue worker "noticed that (his) prescription pain medication was empty and observed (Owens) putting two pills in his mouth," the police report said. The worker attempted to pry them out with her fingers, then was told by Owens that before this incident he'd taken only five of the 40 pain pills in the bottle he'd emptied. The worker then asked Owens "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated, `Yes."'
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 27, 2006 If it was anyone else in the world, I wouldn't say they did this for attention.

Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 I said it jokingly in Week 4 NFL thread, but now I mean it. Publicity stunt. We'll get this whole saga about him overcoming his depression and everyone will learn to love him for some reason. He'll come back better than ever and people will eat it up like crazy. I'm sorry, but as Leena said, if it was anyone else, I wouldn't be saying this. I mean yes, this isn't a laughing matter, but geezus, the timing just reeks of being "too good". snuffbox 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 If he really swallowed 35 painkillers in less than a day, that's no publicity stunt.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 I'd probably consider doing the same thing if I had Drew Bledsoe as my QB.

MFer 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 I am not a T.O. fan. In fact, he may be my most hated player. That being said, I can't possibly fix myself to believe that this was a publicity stunt. I think I remeber learning that most people who talk about committing suicide don't actually go through with it. This is a serious matter. My best guess is that with all the negative talk he's heard through the years, it's worn on him and gotten him to this point. Based on interviews and documentaries, T.O. seems to be a guy who takes everything personal. Besides that, he's had his fair share of personal problems off the field throughout his life. A combination of those factors probably led to these events. I wouldn't be surprised if T.O. has problems with depression or something similar.

HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 Ed Werder reported that the 49ers and Eagles both requested mental tests/evaluations but that TO was offended and refused to do them so there is some history here. The mood swings I remember hearing about years ago.

Guest Felonies! Report post Posted September 27, 2006 Poor guy. Being vilified on a national stage can't be good for your self-worth, no matter how much money you make, or how much you can bench. Of course, he probably is an ostentatious jackass and lousy teammate, but it's scary that it came to this.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 I don't think this is a publicity stunt...it doesn't really fit T.O. Making fun of Jeff Garcia or calling out McNabb, or his various silly antics...those are publicity stunts. Taking a bunch of pills and possibly trying to commit suicide? Yes, it's a call for attention but it's not a publicity stunt.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 His publicist made the 911 call, and is now denying that he tried to kill himself despite the police report which says he did. He could return to practice as early as tomorrow. This is just ridiculous.
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted September 27, 2006 It's not as if there would be repercussions to my actions here, but I don't want to take a suicide attempt lightly, just on general principle, I guess.

I concur. The player obviously needs some mental help, which was apparent long before this incident, and it should be given.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 Reports are that he's now been released from the hospital. So, if he really did try to kill himself, would this be standard operating procedure? Wouldn't he be held at the hospital and referred for a psychiatric evaluation, including a release from a psychiatrist that he's fit to play football? They'd really just let him go home like that? Something doesn't add up.

Something doesn't add up. Unless Texas hospitals have different laws, standard operating procedure is for a psy evalution and if it is determined he is a danger to himself then he is held since attempted suicide is against the law. So yeah, something doesn't stir the kool aid about this story.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 That cop said that attempted suicide is not a criminal offense in his press conference. I say he tried to do it, and since it didn't "take" so to speak now they're in damage control and trying to bring up an allergic reaction.

I say he tried to do it, and since it didn't "take" so to speak now they're in damage control and trying to bring up an allergic reaction. Then Texas laws are different. naiwf 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 It's possible he said that this case wasn't being looked at as a criminal offense, but at the same time it doesn't make sense that the paramedics would call the cops if they didn't think it was an attempted suicide. This whole thing just strikes me as odd, but nevertheless TO's getting another week of free pub out of this and his very own special SportsCenter.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 27, 2006 Plus, wouldn't the painkillers have messed up his liver and such. This does seem like bullshit. Remember that The Player is the only one who said he took all the pills. And besides, with the way pills are today, it's nearly impossible to kill yourself anyway.
