2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 According to yahoo and Foxsports, Ted Lilly is a Chicago Cub. I have no idea how to feel about that with a deal of 4 years, 40 million dollars. My main reaction is to slap my head and shake it back and further in confusion.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Has anyone figured out what the hell Ned Colletti is up to down in Dodgerland? Not that I'm ready to throw out the bad GM moniker yet or anything, it's just that I don't understand the benefit of the moves he makes. Usually I can understand the thought process behind most signings, but with Colletti it seems like he just picks names out of a hat to sign or trade for. Nomar, Kent, Pierre, Furcal, Schmidt, Lugo, Maddux, Mueller...
Guest Report post Posted December 7, 2006 All of those players outside of Lugo came from teams with playoff experience. Nomar and Mueller from Boston, Kent from the Stros and Giants, Furcal and Maddux from Atlanta, Pierre from the Marlins. That's why. Many of the signings are in areas where I don't think the organization has great positional depth.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 But not better ones. Well think about this for a second. In 2002 the Twins won 94 games and the Central division. They did not have Joe Mauer or Justin Morneau. Johan Santana pitched 108 innings. They're great players, but they're not irreplaceable.

They did not have Joe Mauer or Justin Morneau. Johan Santana pitched 108 innings. They're great players, but they're not irreplaceable. They also won a playoff series in 2002 as well. The Twins have always had a very good nucleus of players this decade. Their GM and Gardenhire should get alot of the credit for what they have done with the organization and the payroll or lack there of.

Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Curiously close to San Francisco, isn't Oakland? Ah shit Piazza's going to have to hold a press conference every week or so just to affirm that yes, he is indeed a flaming heterosexual and that IT'S ALL VICIOUS LIES!! devo 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 According to rotoworld, the Braves traded Horacio Ramirez to the Mariners for Rafael Soriano. What is wrong with Bill Bavasi? ESPNews apparently confirmed it, though I can't find anything besides a blog mention thus far. http://www.metsblog.com/blog/_archives/200.../6/2555082.html

UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 I've got no problem with Schmidt's deal, 15 mil per year isn't gonna look so bad once we see Zito's new contract. Plus, it gives Colletti a chance to shop Brad Penny for a power bat.
Guest Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Penny's gone for a corner outfielder or Rocco Baldelli. Not a doubt in my mind.
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted December 7, 2006 LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was hospitalized Wednesday for observation after feeling ill, team officials said. God, what if he died? Would the Cubs treat a Hendry death like a Prior injury? "Everything is fine and Jim should be back to work tomorrow." (media: oh we've heard this before!) "Apparently there's been a snag, and we're just going to keep Jim home this week." (media: There's something they're not telling us!) "It turns out that Jim might be out a few months." (media: Hah! We knew it! I bet he'll never be back!) "Okay, we have some bad news."
Guest NYankees Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Cubs aren't done yet. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Gil Meche will sign with the Cubs to a four year deal, worth 35-37 million The cubs have cornered the market on mediocore pitching. When do they sign Jeff Suppan?
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Piniella said Hendry reminded him of comedian Robin Williams, because of his sense of humor. That explains it! He's signing players like a coke-addled lunatic because he IS a coke-addled lunatic! And for the record, he reminds me of Chris Farley because he's fat. Freddie Bynum joins Corey Patterson and Sammy Sosa in the Crappy Cub Scrap Heap known as the Baltimore Orioles. I wonder what we'll get. What could we possibly get for Freddie Bynum? 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 You know, looking at Suppan's NL numbers I am no longer against the Cubs bringing him in. If they can get him for a reasonable deal, I'll take him. He had one poor season in the National League and that was in 1998. He was very solid for the Cards in three seasons so why not?
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Line from Jim Caple's column... That's why you have exchanges like this: AGENT: Would you trade me two tens for a five? GM: What kind of fool do you take me for? Two tens for a five? I swore last year I would never fall for that one again. AGENT: As you wish. I'll just call the Cubs and tell them I'll take their offer instead. GM: Wait! I've got two tens right here!

vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Speaking of mediocre pitching, has anybody heard anything about Jason Marquis? The Cubs should offer him at least 3/$24 million the way this offseason's been going.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Matsuzaka will cost the Sox a minimum of 14 mil per year, especially with the retard contract Padilla just got. You can thank the Mets organization for giving Kris Benson that horrible contract which started the latest trend on shitty starting pitchers. No. Thank the Cubs for giving Soriano the most absurd contract since A-Rod's for allowing scrubs like GMJ to get 5 @ 55 and shitty pitchers to get $8-10 million this season, marginal guys to get 10-12, and top of the line starters 15+. It's like Kevin Brown all over again. Boras will want at least $16 million per for Matsuzaka now that Schmidt's gonna get 15.7 over 3 years, and well over $100 million over 6 years for Zito which may price him out of the Mets' range. There's no connection between the Soriano deal and the money that pitchers are getting. Everyone knew going into the off-season that pitching would be in high demand, baseball is awash in cash at the moment, and once teams start bidding against each other the prices go up. The only way Soriano could have affected the pitching market was if it took the Cubs out of it, which it obviously didn't. I actually don't think the Schmidt deal is that bad when you look at what guys like Padilla, Lilly and (soon enough) Meche are getting. If you remove an injury plagued 2005 season from the equation he's been one of the better pitchers in baseball the last 5-6 years, with a couple of Cy Young award caliber seasons. And Dodger Stadium can only help the guy. And at only 3 years the risk is minimized should he break down. It's going to drive Zito's price through the roof though. If the Mets are serious about not paying more than Oswalt money for him (which I think they'll move on, but not a ton) it might leave Texas as the top suitor, and that's a recipe for disaster. I still think he'll end up with the Mets though. The Piazza signing was solid. He won't match Thomas' numbers, but 30 hr and an .850 OPS from the DH spot seems quite possible. Great move by the Braves to get Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez. Is that really the best Seattle could do?!?! There's also a rumour that they're close to getting Mike Gonzalez from the Pirates for Adam Laroche, which is a pretty fair deal. I'm hoping the Yankees throw something like $15-16 million for one year at Pettite. I could see him staying with Houston for less though, especially if Clemens is going to come back. Probably a longshot that he comes back to NY. Last thing, Matsuzaka's contract isn't going to be in Schmidt/Zito range. I'm expecting something like $12-13 mil per.
