The 'Sheed Rule

Recommended Posts

Now you know why I predicted Detroit won't make the playoffs. 'Sheed may go Artest on a ref or camera any day now.

The game is about stats not the hippy hoppy values from music videos.

And what exactly does that have to do with this discussion?

Commish Stern and Larry Bird hate the glorification of the ghetto black stereotype. Leave your guns at home, don't jump into the stands cause somebody is heckling or throwing shit, and DO NOT complain, bitch, moan, overreact to the ref about a foul call. Basketball, the game is about flashy slamdunks, no look passes, half court 3 pointers and last second game winning shots. The NBA is not about complaining about tick tack fouls.

Yeah, it's shocking that a commissioner would want the players to not carry firearms and avoid jumping into the stands and attacking fans.

And the only reason Bird cares about the things you mention at all is because it's his players that are doing the stupid shit. If it was a Piston or a Bull or a Celtic, I don't think he'd be leading the charge against the idiotic behavior. He only "hates the glorification of the ghetto black stereotype" when it fucks his team over.

Unless you were being sarcastic and I just didn't catch on.

maybe these rules will help get us back to when the NBA was fun (the Jordan/Magic/Bird eras)

Yeah, because none of those guys ever complained about a call

wow, did I say anything about them not doing it...no I said that was when the NBA was fun...keep your roll eyes

99% of the foul calls are legit

I hope you're kidding.

While it's nice David Stern wants to clean up his league, you can't bother with these rule changes when the officiating is so incredibly biased and inept.

The only way players can fight back is by causing a scene, and showing up the refs. And many times it works to get makeup calls. And all this does is further enhance the "superstar" advantage. You know when we get to games that matter, that the Carmelo's aren't gonna get shit called against them.

Well, for a lot of us the NBA still is, and has always been fun.

You implied that this rule might help bring a return to the "good old days," but if guys back then were complaining about calls and working the refs and the game was still fun, why would you be hopeful that this new crackdown would bring a return to the "way things used to be"? That doesn't make any sense. Because all I'm seeing right now are the same guys getting the same techs they would have in the past, the same guys getting extra leeway, and a whole bunch of bullshit techs when guys show any sort of emotion whatsoever. Magic and Bird used to do all kinds of on court celebrations, fist pumping and yelling and what not. Under the new rule they'd hypothetically be tossed out of every game.

in principle the idea is sound, but throwing out T's for mere facial expressions and laughs and the like cannot end well.

Hopefully they'll back off after the initial burst of hardass reffing. It really only addresses 50% of the problem. It doesn't address the horrible and inconsistent reffing.

the end result will not be less complaining, it will be lots and lots of techs. That's going to make games fun. maybe we should start calling NBA Games "Free Throw Shooting contests" officially.

There were no techs at all in the IND/NOK game, so maybe they've already loosened up on this, or maybe it's just an isolated incident.

Wally just got a tech for pumping his fist....fuck David Stern and the NBA at this point

Yeah that was bullshit, all he did was one of those 'pssh' hand waves.

I'll laugh if during a game, someone gets a T for blinking after a call. Throwing things is childish, but showing emotion by going, "what?" loudly out of surprise is the stupidest reason to hand out a Tech. You are basically giving the refs free reign to call a tech anytime they want. That could be very bad.

there was some stuff at the end of Spurs/Cavs game I was sure they were going to call but they didn't....I wouldn't worry about it TOO much.

well yeah if you're a fan of the spurs and the cavs, it's great that Timmy and Lebron get special treatment that other players don't get.

This rule is there to make the real new stars of the NBA more visible.

The officials of course. Last year they decided the finals, not the players and this year they want the attention on themselves.

Last night, I went to the Hawks Knicks game and there was this play where nate robinson went up to challenge a shot, got called for a foul in the air, and when he landed did this little hop and turn away from the offical so he wouldn't say anything, and got a T for it.

That is ri-goddamned- diculous. Mike Bibbys ejection was horrible too if for no other reason Kevin Garrnett was in the refs face at least 20 times that game. Mike said something T....say something else....T.

The refs are looking for a reason to throw out T's and show that THE ARE THE LAW. which is annoying.

Contrary to what you'd expect from me, I think this is a terrible rule. There is no way that the refs can give the players such short leashes like this. It'd be one thing if this was implemented in the NHL, where the officiating is hardly a hot topic, but we're dealing with NBA referees, who, when it comes to enforcing rules, are slightly more subjective than figure skating judges. There's no way that in the heat of the moment, you can expect intense competitors to, in a lot of cases, just take this obvious shit from the refs. If you're drawing bullshit fouls from looking at Dwyane Wade the wrong way, nothing short of thorazine is going to prevent you from getting frustrated with these clowns. Is there a point where you should hand out a technical? Of course, but zero tolerance is not the way to go in the NBA? Is zero tolerance the way to go in any part of life? Expelling kids for plastic knives?

This is going to boil down to a player snapping and whoopin' a ref's ass on the court.

It's amusing how they've been paying homage to Red for doing things on his own terms, yet Stern has created rules that are taking all the personality out of the game (dress code, no extra jewelry, not allowed to show emotion after a call, etc).

It certainly is an odd state of affairs in the NBA right now.

Someone needs give him enough money to "feed his family" and bring Latrell Sprewell back, if he'll choke out his coach he'd probably do the same to a ref after he gets a Technical for blinking at Dwyane Wade or something.

Hopefully it's Joey Crawford.

I think this new rule is rather silly, but I see it blowing over in a few weeks. Eventually, the fans will complain enough, and the officials will get tired of handing out all those techs. I think this initial "call everything that might possibly be a form of protest" phase is just to get the players' attention. After a few weeks, I think you'll see things shift back closer to where they were last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if somehow this rule makes its way back during the playoffs, though, further exposing the incompetence/bias of NBA officials.

Rasheed Wallace is going to knock Joey Crawford the fuck out with a stiff right cross.

That and the 11th and 12th players on the bench will see significant minutes.

This rule is nothing but a safety net for the refs. Instead of making them more accountable for the calls that they blow or miss or look the other way on, this is the trump card that will get players run if they "protest too much". I agree that there is too much whining in the league, but talk about killing a mouse with a 20-megaton nuclear bomb...

I'm straight up sick to death of this "lets showcase our superstars by penalizing everyone else" bullshit, already. I posted a long-ass reply on this topic, but it got eaten up someplace, and I am too tired to go on a diatribe about it. Suffice to say that someone is going to explode like a pressure cooker due to this bullshit rule and he is going to be tossed out of the league for kicking the shit out of the ref. Why the Player's Union approved of this I have no fucking idea.
