FOX News planning right-leaning show similar to Daily Show

Recommended Posts

The only way I would watch this is if JBL was the host of the show instead.

Fox News Channel might air two episodes of a "Daily Show"-like program with a decidedly nonliberal bent on Saturday nights in late January, with the possibility that it could become a weekly show for the channel.

The half-hour show is executive produced by "24's" Joel Surnow and Manny Cota and creator Ned Rice, who previously wrote for "Politically Incorrect" and "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" through This Just In Prods. It would take aim at what Surnow calls "the sacred cows of the left" that don't get made as much fun of by other comedy shows.

"It's a satirical news format that would play more to the Fox News audience than the Michael Moore channel," Surnow said. "It would tip more right as 'The Daily Show' tips left."

The show was pitched as "This Just In" when it first got life as a 20-minute pilot presentation for Fox Broadcasting Co.'s late-night division. But when that network passed, Surnow said it attracted the attention of Fox News Channel chief Roger Ailes.

"I showed it to Roger, and he really liked it and thought it could work on Fox News if we could make it conform to some of the restraints" of a cable news channel. Fox News Channel confirmed that talks were going on.

"Fox News is always looking for new cutting-edge programming ideas," said Bill Shine, senior vp programming at Fox News. "We look forward to working with Joel Surnow on this opportunity."

Taped before a studio audience in Los Angeles, the show will feature two co-anchors, actors Kurt Long ("Cuts," "Games Across America") and Susan Yeagley ("Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Reno 911!"). It also will feature person-on-the-street interviews and correspondent reports like other shows. But Surnow said that it's not going to be strictly conservative but more in the spirit of the old and rebellious "Saturday Night Live."

"It's not going to hit you over the head with partisan politics," Surnow said. "It'll hit anything that deserves to be hit."

The title "This Just In" was scrapped after producers found out the name was being used by an HBO-AOL production. A new title has not been settled on.

Surnow said the two shows will be completed within the next couple of months and that none of the pilot presentation will be used on air. He said he thinks that it will appeal to millions of people who aren't seeing this type of show on television and that it would skew younger than the normal cable news demographic.

"The most exciting thing for us will be that it's going to be fresh," Surnow said.

Surnow is repped by Paradigm and attorney Michael Gendler.

While Stewart is obviously a Democrat, the Daily Show takes shots at both sides.

Agreed, but the left-leaning is definitely more present. I remember them saying a few years ago "We get talked about as being a pretty liberal show, but look who's in charge"

Which one was Yeagley on Reno 911?

She had a role as a cashier and on Curb she was the stewardess. So you know, she had extremely important parts.

Other than the sheer inappropriateness of having a comedy show on a news network, I'm not sure what they're going for here. I'm curious to know what kinds of things they'll be making fun of on a conservative-leaning comedy show.

People who oppose the Iraq War?

Poor people?

Muslims?

Gays?

Yeah, nobody is safe from the Funny Face.

Just give Dennis Miller another shot, if you want to do non-liberal news satire.

Wait, are you telling me people watch O'Reily and Hannity without laughing hysterically?

That NoCalMike really keeps us on our toes.

Christ, will you just leave the guy alone already? For God's sake, your "reactionaty conservative who tries too hard" schikt was funny at first, but it's really annoying now. Just stay in the Chocolate Socket if you are going to flame someone.

Admit it though. Mike's joke was pretty lame.

Dennis Miller already had his chance, and his show was downright horrible. The problem was that Miller is a lightweight when it comes to debate. If his show is just pure comedy, like his HBO show was, then he would probably do a better job, but the MSNBC show he had was atrocious because he would invite a liberal author on, and then when he was getting trounced in a debate, he would start rattling off personal insults and making fun of the guest.

The Daily Show is a comedy show on a comedy network.

Why is Fox trying to put on a comedy show on a news network?

If they really want to fuck with Jon Stewart, just call him gay and hire an actor to play his ex-lover. Works every time.

Oh, Stewart wishes they'd do that. The Daily Show would have a field day mocking something like that. And then, Colbert would come on and start condemning Stewart on his show...

Now I wish they'd do it! Come on FOX! I'm sure you can dig someone up to say John Stewart enjoys raping teenage boys! I'm begging ya!

See, when people like Tucker Carlson point out that Stewart makes fun of his guests and makes a joke out of the news, all Stewart has to do is sit back and and say "it's a comedy show on a comedy channel!" However, when it's fox doing the same thing, they make themselves, the channel and the party which they represent look incredibly childish.

Daily Show has been making alot of jokes about all the Dem Presidential candidates lately...Hilary, Obama, Vilsack, etc. And the skewering of Kerry has been consistent since 2004. But, because they also make jokes about the party that had been, until last November, in control of every body of Federal Govt, they are clearly a liberal outfit only.

Yeah, and that's a bad thing, because it's just a lazy out when he goes up to Tucker Carlson and asks "Why are you hurting America? Stop hurting America."

I don't remember if I said this already, but putting a news parody on a news channel doesn't bode well for what precious little journalistic integrity Fox News Channel has left. Heavily right-wing analysis is one thing; everybody's doing analysis in prime time on cable news. But a fake news show? Come on. Dumb move. Put it on FX if you're gonna do it, but not on a real news channel, insofar as the trio of yelling-head cable outlets is considered "real news."

Why try to argue that the Daily Show leans left, though? I mean really. If it didn't, then Jon Stewart wouldn't have the pop-cultural capital to get Crossfire taken off the air after twentysome years.

Bad reasoning. Moral conservatism has shut down far more things than the opposite. Crossfire was also on its last legs near the end anyway. Moving it in front of a live audience (the worst idea ever for a political debate show) was the death knell. This was back when America lusted for the wisdom of Cavuto and Gibson in the afternoons for some bizarre reason.

It was getting weak at the end there with Tucker Carlson, Paul Begala, and a live studio audience, but having the CEO of the network say "golly, Jon Stewart really brought up some great points!" as he announced its cancellation sure is a pathetic way for one of CNN's flagship programs to go out. Good for Jon, though. Craig Kilborn tried to get Larry King pulled off the air in 1998, but no such luck.
