Christmas Music

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year. What are your favorites, least favorites, surprises, etc.?

I don't think you can go wrong with Christmas rap. "Christmas in Hollis," "Santa Claus is Comin' Straight to the Ghetto," "Merry Motherfuckin' Christmas," the quality is endless.

Electric stuff from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is also epic and amazing.

The Christmas album I probably listen to the most is When My Heart Finds Christmas by Harry Connick, Jr., even if I can't stand some of the arrangements and the sudden burst of sound that happens in like every song. Can't go wrong with any of the Muppet Christmas albums, either.

I'm partial to "Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)" By The Darkness, "Fairy Tale of New York" by The Pogues and "Bizarre Christmas Incident" by Ben Folds Five

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" is also a huge guilty pleasure of mine.

"Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight)" by The Ramones

I saw the Trans-Siberian Orchestra this past Saturday afternoon. Good stuff...until they had a singer. Then it got boring fast.

there's an album my mom has called 'christmas favorites' that has some very nice versions od the standards. mahalia jackson does "o holy night," tony bennett does "my favorite things," and robert fuckin' goulet does "angels we have heard on high."

a few weeks ago i saw a copy of 'christmas on death row', on vinyl, for like 8 bucks. i have yet to forgive myself for not buying it.

Classics:

Adeste Fideles

Greensleeves

We Three Kings

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Carol of the Bells

Lot of the modal/minor stuff there. My family has a mixtape that we always listen to in the car for our four days of Christmas traveling. I like the contemporary stuff on there: "Christmas in Dixie," "Little Saint Nick," "A Wonderful Christmas Time," and "This Christmas." For me, nothing says "stuck in a bottleneck behind a tollbooth outside Waukegan" like those songs, especially the McCartney one. I think it's because most of the other classics were on CDs and stuff that I'd hear at home, whereas I never tracked these down until I got Kazaa in like 2002, so the only time I would hear the song would be on the Tri-State Tollway.

This was always my favorite Christmas album growing up.

1. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - Andy Williams

2. Winter Wonderland - Mitch Miller & The Gang

3. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - Doris Day

4. Greensleeves - The Ray Conniff Singers

5. The Christmas Song - Tony Bennett

6. The Little Drummer Boy - Johnny Cash

7. Silver Bells - Jerry Vale

8. The First Noel - Anita Bryant

9. We Wish You A Merry Christmas - Andre Kostelanetz & His Orchestra

10. O Come, All Ye Faithful - Jim Nabors

11. Jingle Bells? - Barbra Streisand

(Exception of track 11. Even as a five-year-old, I knew this shit was vile.)

12. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear - Burl Ives

13. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Robert Goulet

14. O Little Town Of Bethlehem - Marty Robbins

15. Deck The Halls - The Mormon Tabernacle Choir/New York Philharmonic

16. Sleigh Ride - Johnny Mathis

17. Christmas Bells - Patti Page

18. Joy To The World - Percy Faith & His Orchestra

19. Silent Night, Holy Night - Mahalia Jackson

20. White Christmas - Frank Sinatra

"Fairytale of New York" and "Do They Know It's Christmas" are probably my two favorites. ("Tonight thank God it's them instead of yewwwwwwww")

The dance number from Charlie Brown's Christmas always puts a hop in my step as well and Greensleeves for the more classical side.

"March of the Kings" is another cool minor carol. And how could I forget "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"? I just think those have a lot of character.

"Patapan" is great too! It's all coming back to me.

Some of my Christmas favorites...

Johnny Mathis - "Winter Wonderland." Particularly his tone when talking about knocking down the snowman.

Waitresses - "Christmas Wrapping." Just fun... screw those who don't like it.

Brenda Lee - "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." Classic for a reason.

Chuck Berry - "Run Rudolph Run."

WHAM! - "Last Christmas." It is WHAM!... (Thanks C Dub)

There's this new wave-y song that used to play at Bob's the first/last/only X-Mas I worked there, and I dunno what the fuck it is. It was also one of the few songs played at Bob's (generic pop/rock bullshit that's grating to anybody with even a slight hint of musical taste) I didn't hate, and dare I say I actually kinda liked it.

The chorus goes something like this:

There's a turkey in the wing

He doesn't dance, and he can't sing

One Christmas left behind...

...forever...

I was thinking about that Sufjan album, since his whimsicality seems like a perfect fit for Christmas music. Let us know how it is.

It's what you'd expect out of a Christmas album. Some nice covers of the classics, nothing spectacular. "Sister Winter" on disc 5 however, is pretty amazing. Definetly a song worthy of being on a 'real' album.

Overall, it's a nice package, what with the song chord book, comic strip, stickers, etc.

Stars' cover of said Pogues song is fairly awesome and worthy of the original.

It would have to be really good to live up to the original. I don't really like too many Christmas songs. I get sick of them like a week in to December. Anything orchestral though I can tolerate, but I hate hearing the same songs over and over again.

Bowie & Crosby is still one of my favorites.
