I want the Bears to win cause I'm tired of the, "NFC is the JV conference" that sports reporters and announcers have been saying for a couple of years now. If they feel that way, why do they even bother caring who wins the NFC? The Bears have the type of defense that can beat the Colts: Bring the pressure, hit em hard when they catch it, and just punish them for even having the nerve to get on the field with you.

 

That's what New England's defense WAS that owned the Colts. That's the defense the Steelers can play that took them down. And that is the only, I repeat, the ONLY defense in the NFL that can shut down Manning and the Colts. If they want to play, "we'll let Manning sit there with no added pressure and just try to cover the receivers", then this game is over and done. Get Manning to have happy feet (the entire first half of the AFC title game) and you can shut down the Colts offense. Shut down the Colts offense and wear out their defense and it's blowout city for the Bears.

 

Or they can play Bronco defense and let Manning leave with a Super Bowl MVP plus records in yards in a game, touchdown passes in a game, completions in a game, attempts in a game and just every passing stat he can get his hands on.

It's bizarre but I have yet to hear any of the pundits mention that the Bears played the flat out worst schedule in the NFL this year. I took a look at this on www.realtimerpi.com and the Bears were dead last in SOS at 32. Colts were 7.

 

As far as the Bears having this amazing defense....what amazing defense? Maybe at the start of the season, but the last month or so of the season yielded these results:

 

Win over the Rams (42-27), win over Tampa Bay in OT (34-31), win over Detroit (26-21), loss to Green Bay (26-7), playoff OT win over Seattle (27-24), and the NFC title game win over New Orleans (39-14). Okay, where's this amazing defense? I realize some guys got hurt, but I fail to see any shutdown defense that will shut out the Colts or anything. The one game where the Bears played anything resembling quality defense was the NFC title game, and I think the miserable weather for a dome team like the Saints had a lot to do with that and led to foolish fumbles they wouldn't usually make.

 

Frankly, I agree with Leena in that I just want this game to be over with. It's seemed like the longest 2 weeks until the Super Bowl ever.

On the contrary. The lack of an insufferable storyline such as T.O Vs The World or the NE brand of "We don't get respect" or by the existance of two intriguing teams has made the 2 week period more managable then most years.

 

Aside from the occasional side-bar of the black head coaches aspect, it's been mostly about the match up of two appealing teams with a wide range of dynamic differences. Most times it's a matter wanting to get the game over with to end the idiotic hype while this year is a case of wanting to see the game finally come around.

I haven't paid much attention to the coverage, so this wait has been pretty tolerable. It is an intriguing matchup which mainly hinges on which defense can knock the opposing offense off-kilter first. The more I think about it, this seems a lot like the Tampa-Oakland matchup with a bit of Patriots-Packers mixed in. I think that Devon Hester has a pretty good chance of breaking Desmond Howard's return yardage record in this one, partly because Vinatieri isn't very strong at kickoffs (since it's outdoors, expect his kicks to fall around the 5-8 yard line) and the Colts return coverage is abysmal. That could be the x-factor for the Bears.

In a way that is what I meant. I mostly want this game to arrive so it'll happen and then be done with. As far as Hester goes, the Colts would have to be incredibly stupid to even let him have any serious opportunities. Kick it away from him on the kickoff, punt it out of bounds, whatever is needed.

The hype specifically for the game hasn't been bad. But, the worst part is how the entire sports world shuts down at least the week before the game. Sports radio is nothing but crappy interviews, mostly with obscenely rich athletes trying to become more obscenely rich by promoting shit.

This explains why I haven't enjoyed the game unless the Patriots are in. And even then, I don't enjoy it as much since it's more about the halftime and pre-game crap. I don't drink so I'm pretty much left watching it for the love of football. Which would be fine if the two teams in the game actually played like teams that belonged in the Super Bowl. Rarely do we get a good game that is a joy to watch.

This is how I see it as well (13 or so points), though my score is more like 33-20. I just think that all the advantages/breaks the Colts had in the second half of the AFC title game (indoors, on turf, tiring defense with slow LBs) are gone here.

After two weeks of watching the media and the mainstream debate, break down and analyze every facet of this event flip-flopping sometimes in the manner of a day between their stance on Rex Grossman from being initially thought as “the worst starting QB in SB history” with those morons taking a step back (or rather feeling the backlash) and started to put him over while at the expense of moving the pressure over to Peyton Manning bringing back the “choke” label and Dan Marino comparison.

 

Due to a lack of juicy storyline or idiot wide receiver, more focus has been placed on the players and the coaches in recent history. So many intangibles exist in this game from QB dynamics between the long tenured commercial giant and future HOF stat god Peyton Manning against the inconsistent virtual rookie Rex Grossman whom at his best is incredible but at times plays like a JV QB. Each team employs a two pronged running attack. Chicago with Jones and Benson while Indianapolis rides with Addai and Rhodes. Indianapolis has the edge with offense, while defense is Chicago’s signature. However, each team is capable of playing well on the side of the ball. Chicago’s offense has been at times, more potent then Indianapolis while the Colts defense has stepped up in the post season. The big separation seems to rest within the Special Teams. Chicago has a legitimate threat to score in Hester. However, Indy has one of the most experienced kickers in super bowl history capable of countering that threat.

 

The game can easily go either way. Each team can blow the other way using either explosive defense or capitalizing defenses but it could also be a close game.

 

Each team are believable as winners and there’s a wide branch of possible game making stars here on both sides of the field. In fact, QB play might be secondary and the emphasis should be placed on the running attack. In fact, with the potential of a rainfall, their importance becomes greatly increased.

 

I like both teams. Each possess a good coach of honorable quality and great players that you can get behind. They both play exciting brands of football and seeing those styles clash will be quite enjoyable.

 

I don’t think it’s fair to assign a prediction but I will and despite the strengths that Chicago offers as well as the danger of pitching a blowout against Indy, I feel more compelled for The Colts.

The only people I've seen pick the Bears are Wilbon(homer pick), Skip Bayless, and most of the random people who accompany him on 1st & 10.

 

I said it a few posts ago but I'll say it again, Bears 28-24. I'll go with Thomas Jones as MVP. Really, the only decided advantage the Colts have is at QB and WR. I'm not buying the "new" Colts D and I think Manning will get pressured quite a bit. I think Hester will play a big role too and Grossman will be a lot better than expected.
