Rockies lead the White Sox 11-3. Ed Farmer is already bitching about check swings. Welcome back, Ed.

EDIT: Joe Crede scored on a Brian Anderson hit to center. Chris Singleton said the score is now 11-3. Welcome back, Chris.

So, how's that bunting and small ball working for the White Sox? Also the Red Sox are playin' tonight but I only get to catch the first hour sadly... here's hoping Dustin Pedroia produces though 'cause I mark for the guy.

Damn it, Sox play again tomorrow afternoon. I'm guessing I won't be listening to much Boers & Bernstein this month, huh. Gotta get those spring training games on the radio.

It's... spring training. The White Sox finished with a losing record in spring training in 2005, and went on to win the World Series. Really, spring training is worthless IMO.

Well, it's good for the guys trying to make a club that has open roster spots and for checking out the minor league players. But for evaluating how the team will play in the regular season? Yeah, it's pretty damn worthless.

You really can't extrapolate anything from one spring training game on the 28th of February. That said, Garland is experiencing shoulder tightness (and gave up 7 runs in 2 innings), and Jenks had to leave the game due to injury as well. If you're going to be concerned about anything, be concerned about that, not attempted smallball.

I was making that statement more because Ozzie has stated repeatedly that he wants this club to return to bunts and smallball (He even had Joey Cora set up a little "station" devoted to just bunting). It'll no doubt be a regular season factor but I'm curious to see if certain players bunt more, etc. during ST games.

Bobby Kielty out 3-6 weeks, but I am more worried about Kotsay sitting out with a stiff back, which seemed to plague him all during last season.

It's good to see Eric Milton is in mid-season form. The very first batter he faced this year hit a long home run.

From rotoworld:

Quote:

Top prospect Andrew McCutchen homered and doubled off Eric Milton as the Pirates' left fielder on Thursday.

Well, sure, but let's see how he does when he faces some major league pitching. McCutchen is expected to open the season at Double-A Altoona.

Michael Young gets a 5 year $80mill extension. Why the Rangers chose to hand that extension out when Mark Texiera is getting closer to free agency is beyond me.

With that kind of money it should be moot, but Teixeira is Boras client. Boras always tests free agency first, and Texas, as a policy, don't usually negotiate with him (although they have recently, so maybe the bad blood is gone).

Trachsel got roughed up in his first inning as well..and The Orioles blew a lead in the 9th inning vs the Marlins, although it was against some guy named Deza..so it doesn't really matter too much. With the exception of Trachsel, I dont think any of the pitchers that pitched that are likely to be up with the Os on opening day pitched bad at all.

Twp of the new guys in the bullpen, Guthrie and Baez pitched really well.

Josh Johnson, who had an outstanding rookie season for the Marlins last year, has nerve damage and could potentially be out for the season. Yikes.

What do they specifically have against Boras? Bad blood from the A-Rod deal?

watched yanks, twins today, hard to gage in the firts game of the year, but wang looked good in his short two innings, Phil Hughes looked ok (finally got a look at him), the only pitcher who looked shaky was (surprise surprise) TJ Beam. overall well pitched, and defensed game. a little bit of power and a lot of walks. good to get a look at some rookies and perhaps future stars.

final 6-1 Yanks

WP-Wang

LP-Silva

HR-Damon, rbi

HR-Giambi, 2 rbi

Posada-RBI

Cano-RBI

GOD DAMNIT. I made him a keeper in our fantasy league.

Of course, I don't mean to make light of his injury and hope he gets well, but damn that's a blow.

It's not fair, I passed up keeping Felix Hernandez for him. :(

If this came out before the draft I could have utilized the Stephen Joseph Liriano precedent and dropped him but its too late now. Oh well, hopefully its not as serious as anticipated and he's back midseason or something.

Outside of injuries and non roster invitees possibly making the team, I don't find much of a reason to pay attention to spring training.

I should probably watch Yankee games given that the late-inning replacements will make up the AAA Scranton team this year. The fun of Spring Training for me is seeing the AAA guys get some exposure.

The highlight for me, so far, has been seeing Chris Volstad w/ the big club.

I used to collect baseball cards and when Volstad was drafted I went nuts buying up his rookie cards. I spent almost $2000 on a variety of them. A few months later I was able to flip them all for close to $6000 (when Chris was ranked high on the 2006 BA Top Prospects list). I feel like I just really want this guy to succeed and all.

I still have an autographed baseball of his because I happened to end up talking to Chris' high school pitching coach one day. I sent him a ball and a few weeks later I got it backed autographed w/ Volstad's signature on it.

I'm really hoping he makes it.

We get like, hardly any spring training games. I have to pretend it doesn't exist, outside of the fact that the team won't be back at Dodgertown.

The only thing that I try to pay attention to is injuries, because this team has so many older players that I can't help but think about it.

Clem Labine died. :(

I also enjoy seeing AAA and other minor league players get a chance at 'national' or local exposure. In the Braves/Pirates game, Eldred and Bixler both have HRs for the Pirates. Neil Walker is now up to bat :)

For the Dodgers, it might be a good thing if some of the vets get injured. They can win that division if they don't get too comfortable with Juan Pierre and Luis Gonzalez getting the majority of playing time in the outfield.

Pierre, yes. Gonzo, I'll wait and see before determining whether or not I'll like him.

I'd love for Pierre to get hurt for the whole season so that Kemp could take his spot, and then Kemp would play so good that Gonzo definitely wouldn't be kept for next year. I'm more worried about injuries to the rotation, that would mean instant death.

At least you have some pitching depth going into the season. I think the Dodgers could win the division this year, but I still like San Diego and Arizona a bit better. That could change several times by the time the season starts.
