I'm not very knowledgeable on NBA history. The conspiracy theory was that the NBA wanted a big time star player (Ewing) on the Knicks (big market team, playing in NY, ton of publicity for the league), so the league rigged the draft (either by creasing the card, or freezing the card, so that the guy picking would know which card to pull out) so that the Knicks would get the 1st pick.
