Ravenbomb Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I'm looking for some acapella songs or acapella versions of songs, anybody know any good ones I should get?
King Kamala Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Acapella music is my #1 guilty pleasure. I love Rockapella and shit like that. I occassionally listen to this college radio station show that is three hours of acapella songs. You'd be surprised at what songs get the acapella treatment. I've heard a version of Dexter Freebish's "Leaving Town" a couple times, whose idea was it to do an acapella version of that?
Ravenbomb Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 Mr. Grieves was good. Songs I've gotten so far: "Llorando" by Rebekah Del Rio "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega "Me and a Gun" by Tori Amos "War" by Sinead O' Connor and recently "Mr. Grieves" by TV On the Radio
C Dubya 04 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 http://www.offthebeat.net/ This the group from UPenn. They're pretty good.
Dandy Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Five O'Clock Shadow's cover of "What I Got" from Sublime.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 There's always "For the Longest Time," which sucks ass. I'm getting some serious Andy Bernard vibes from this thread. As a rule I kind of hate a capella, but definitely love the hell out of the TV on the Radio cover, and their almost-as-good "Ambulance."
Black Lushus Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 It's so Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday-Boyz 2 Men Yesterday-Boyz 2 Men (cover of the Beatles song...Beatles, right?) If She Only Knew-NSync...that's right goddammit...NSync...
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Why Can't I fall in Love - Yale Spizzwinks That's the only one off memory that I can think of liking, and the Ivan Neville version (which is not acapella) is way better anyway.
Ravenbomb Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 There's always "For the Longest Time," which sucks ass. I'm getting some serious Andy Bernard vibes from this thread. As a rule I kind of hate a capella, but definitely love the hell out of the TV on the Radio cover, and their almost-as-good "Ambulance." Well, I'm not necessarily looking for that particular kind of acapella, mostly just singing without the instrumental part.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Shai - "If I Ever Fall in Love" A big hit in 1992, but mostly forgotten now, especially compared to the inferior, though still good, Boyz II Men song, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."
Black Lushus Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 wow, you're going to give the ace to Shai on that comparison? Interesting....man, I just don't know....
Giuseppe Zangara Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Bah. That's the only Shai song I can name, and yes, I'll give it props over Boyz II Men's similar a cappella track. That said, yes, I'll take the Boyz any day.
Ravenbomb Posted May 25, 2007 Author Report Posted May 25, 2007 Yeah, whatever happened to Boyz II Men, anyways? They were good, but just seemed to disappear
King Kamala Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Last I heard, the deep voiced smooth guy had to quit the band and they're now a trio. This was like three years ago.
Black Lushus Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 if you think about, there really doesn't seem to be too many R&B/Boy Bands going around these days...it's all rap or individual "R&B" pop acts.
Ravenbomb Posted May 25, 2007 Author Report Posted May 25, 2007 I wasn't that big into B2M when they were actually around, but I kinda miss them now.
DrVenkman PhD Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 There seems to be too much real talk in here for me to suggest the Carmen Sandiego theme song by Rockapella.
King Kamala Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 If we're going to suggest any Rockapella song in here. We're going to have to suggest "Zombie Jamboree", it's the best acapella song I've heard about zombies invading New York City. Yes, I can name two Rockapella songs.
Black Lushus Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 hey man, don't sleep on the Carmen San Diego theme. didn't those guys do a commercial too? what was the product?
Ravenbomb Posted May 25, 2007 Author Report Posted May 25, 2007 Folgier's Coffee. My god, I can't believe I remember that.
Black Lushus Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 don't worry, remembering they did a commercial is bad enough...
Matt Young Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 I know next to nothing about naming any a capella songs, but I must say that Boyz II Men, at least on Cooleyhighharmony and II were the shit. Oh, and "One Sweet Day" from Mariah Carey's Daydream owned all in 1996.
Coffin Surfer Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 If your into weird stuff: Captain Beefhart has quite a few odd Acapella songs with him seemingly searching for lyrics and trying out rhymes on "Trout Mask Replica." Vocal acrobats: Diamanda Galas, Mike Patton, Phil Minton, and Demetrio Stratos have all released impressive but freakish Avant Garde Acapella records.
PLAGIARISM! Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Boyz II Men. I have no idea what's 'hip' anymore.

Vocal acrobats: Diamanda Galas, Mike Patton, Phil Minton, and Demetrio Stratos have all released impressive but freakish Avant Garde Acapella records. I've got some Trout Mask Replica, and I've been trying to track down a version of Llorando that Mike Patton did when Peeping Tom were at the Fillmore and got some of his stuff from Adult Themes for Voice.
Vampiro69 Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 An acapella group to check out is called The Blanks. This is the same group that appears on Scrubs. They actually aren't that bad. Plus, Rockapella is awesome. Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? Simply classic.
Guest George's Box Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 If your into weird stuff: Captain Beefhart has quite a few odd Acapella songs with him seemingly searching for lyrics and trying out rhymes on "Trout Mask Replica." "The Dust Blows Forward And The Dust Blows Back" Boyz II Men was an awesome group. They could sing.
Murmuring Beast Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Oh, come on. Anything by the Beach Boys. 'Our Prayer'; 'Graduation Day'; 'And Your Dreams Come True'. There's a capella versions of every Pet Sounds track available. Too obvious however.
