I think Dan Wheeler's just made himself expendable. After coming in in the 8th inning after Sampson pitched 7 innings, he gave up 3 ERs. After being pulled, Sampson went over to Wheeler in the dugout to tell him not to worry about it and Wheeler totally pushed Sampson like a little girl. That shit might fly in Chicago...but not here in Houston, pal.

Yankees are rolling right now !!!! No one wants to play us right now :D

It sure helps when you're playing a White Sox team that can't hit for shit (they're smartball grinders though) and the generally woeful Pittsburgh Pirates!

I'm more surprised that the White Sox are losing than I am that the Yankees are winning. It's positively baffling that their lineup and short outfield fences can combine for 30th in hitting. I know Thome, Podsednik, and Grinderstad have been hurt, and Crede is now out for the year, but Podsednik and Grinderstad aren't that good anyway, and you still have Konerko, Dye, and Pierzynski who should be hitting well. The rotation is pitching well, but the bullpen has been almost North Side bad this year, especially Aardsma and MacDougal. I think I picked these guys to finish second in the Central, which, much like Kenny Williams, doesn't look too fuckin' smart after all.

The Phillies are just two games out after sweeps of the Mets and White Sox. The divisional races in both the NL East and West are looking very good this year. The Yankees have moved to 4.5 back of the wild card, they're certainly contenders yet.

call me smarmy or whatever but I'm not impressed with sweeps of both the dead in the water White Sox and Pirates. This is the part of the schedule where the Yanks do need to have a roll or they're out of it. They took 2 of 3 from Boston and if they can take at least 2 of 3 from the Mets then I'll start to worry. Otherwise they have a cupcake schedule until the end of June.

They have a brutal August; 3 at Cleveland, 3 at LAA, 3 against Boston and 8 games against Detroit.

Remember when they started 3-10 and and there were about a half dozen posters on the board who said they were done already? That was fun.

Sounds like a smarmy, disheartened, dejected Cubs fan interjecting.

Its funny how when were losing , no one says anything about us and minds their own business .... but once the Yankees become the Yankees , everyone starts shaking and talking smack about us and how we have no chance lol

New England is on high alert this morning ... that 8.5 lead is NOTHING and they know it :D

It's funnier that when the Yankees are losing, you can't find a fan in sight. Win a couple games and they are everywhere again.

I stand by my assessment. Sure, they're doing good now, but that's been the Phillies MO over the last few seasons - start off slow, make a push, fall back again, then make a push at the end that comes up short. Bullpen is still shaky, they could be down a starter in Garcia, and the bats will invariably go through a stretch where nobody can hit.

I'd love for them to make the playoffs, but I'm not running out & making any bets based off their performance over the last 1.5 weeks.

Eddie Murray's been sacked as the Dodgers' hitting coach. I guess it's his fault the team lacks a real power hitter and bats Juan Pierre near the top of the order. Cubs should go get him.

And Jeff Weaver is really, really bad. Usually when the Cubs face a lousy or unproven pitcher, they can't put together more than a run or two. Already three off Weaver after one, including three extra basehits, two of which were triples.

Adam Everett just either twisted or broke his ankle after tripping over Carlos Lee in the outfield. He's getting carted off the field. It looked comprable to HHH ripping up his ACL after tripping over Chris Jericho a few years ago. I don't think it's THAT serious, but it still looked bad. It's too bad, too; If Everett doesn't have his legs, he's just a .220 hitter with no range. I hope it's not THAT bad and that Mark Loretta fills in admirably while he's out.

On the bright side for Astros fans, this may leave the team with no reason to play the guy every day. Seriously, the Astros' success in recent years has amazed me considering they've got two of the worst everyday position players in their lineup and a guy with a sub-300 OBP leading off.

Yeah, but ya can't sit a guy with his own statue in front of the ballpark...although the Astros could literally rip the Biggio statue out of the ground, bat it leadoff and it would probably get on base at a higher clip than Bidge.

Jason Marquis can quickly crash and burn with the best of them. One hit through five and then he hits Jeff Weaver, walks two, and gives up a bases-clearing double. Mixed in there was an error by DeRosa that should've been two.

And suddenly, Weaver looks dominant.

Jacque Jones is a joke. Cubs get runners at the corner with one out and he can't get the run in. Dude makes a living flying out except when he has to. Just dump the guy for whatever you can get; he's a waste of space.

And just to illustrate how awful the Cubs are with situational hitting and hitting in general, I leave you with two pieces of information:

- Jeff Weaver officially has a quality start.

- The respective line scores are 4 2 0 and 3 10 1.

Gee...someone's excited...

Anyway, in Houston, the diagnosis on Adam Everett is a fractured right fibula. A broken leg. Too bad for him.

It'll have to be Loretta unless they call up Eric Bruntlett. The Astros have repeatedly said that Chris Burke doesn't have the arm to play short (yet he can play CF at MMP?), and, beyond him, there's nobody.

I'd imagine Eric Bruntlett gets the call from AAA; either that or Chris Burke plays out of position AGAIN and shares time with Loretta. Whichever option they go with, I'm not sure if what they gain on offense will make up for what they lose on defense. Eric Bruntlett would be the best option, I think. He's nearly as good as Everett at short and at least a bit better offensively. Or, Hell, maybe Gar will get his 12-man pitching staff back and just call Chan Ho Park up straight away.

I'm convinced that Brad Ausmus will actually have to die on the field for the Astros to get rid of him. To put up those numbers and still be an every day player is mind boggling. Oh sorry I forgot he was the "clubhouse leader". Don't forget his "veteran presence"

The Brewers just got done beating the Tigers, 6-5. So, they take the series, even after getting no-hit a couple days ago. I guess Verlander woke them up a little bit. Ben Sheets also got his 1,000th career strikeout today, which is nice.
