Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

Recommended Posts

Has it only been a little over a week since this all broke out?

This isn't the biggest thread @ TSM, but it certainly has to be one of the fastest growers, that's for damn sure...

I think it was in the first 5 or 10 pages of this thread that someone wanted to know what the odds of this thread reaching 47 pages in a week were.

I really don't know what I'm more pissed off with: The fact that Chris Benoit, on of my all time favorites, did this OR the horrible reporting/insane conclusions the media is trying to slap together.

Roid rage. Does anyone who is doing their homework on this case and looking at the facts, drug history, etc, really think that he killed his family during a bout of roid rage......over about 48 hours? I'm not a doctor, but thats one hell of a bout of roid rage.

It has been some of the absolute worse reporting I have ever seen. It makes you wonder just how many other stories are filled with half truths, lies, and completely wrong information. I would guess a lot. It certainly has been maddening and hard to watch.

All they are doing is misleading the general population as to what happened, or at least, what new news is coming up. There have been numerous people here at work who talk about Roid Rage and thats why he did it. Thats usually when I cut in, mention that nancy was planning on a divorce, Daniel's Fragile-X, GHB and the role it might have played, etc.

Just a pain in the ass to hear these fucking idiots talk about it like they know everything. Shit, I don't know everything about what happened, but at least I'm doing my goddamn homwork on it before I shoot my mouth off.

What kills me about it is there have been doctors on each network since this thing happened that have repeatedly said although roid rage might have had something to do with him killing nancy, it is extremely unlikely it had anything to do with the killing of his son or himself. Yet the headlines are all about the steroids and causing him to do all of it. I suppose its too complicated. Idiots.

Mitchell over at pwtorch had in interesting item this morning. He also thinks its interesting (which I have mentioned in the raw thread) that they are pushing the most obvious roided up son of a bitch on the roster lashley first thing out of the gate after the benoit tragedy. Also interesting is the story about Kane being put in the main event.

What does Vince McMahon think about changing the way he does business in light of the revelations in the mainstream media about wrestler deaths and drug use and yesterday’s indictment of Dr. Phil Astin, Chris Benoit’s doctor?

Two telling moments as to McMahon’s mindset now came on WWE’s Monday Night Raw. The entire two hour show was built around the issue of who would receive the main event title shot against champion John Cena on the July 22nd Great American Bash pay-per-show.

That lucrative (in real life) main event went to Bobby Lashley, who previously was promoted at Wrestlemania with a high profile alliance with Donald Trump. Lashley is the most freakishly muscled performer to enter World Wrestling Entertainment in several years.

The second biggest reveal on the show was the video revealing and promoting the return of Triple H, McMahon’s son in law to WWE programming. Triple H, a body building enthusiast, is also one of the most heavily muscled performers in the genre.

An interesting decision was also revealed during the Smackdown portion of the WWE television taping. WWE performer Kane was given the other main event title slot on the Great American Bash show.

That’s a change from McMahon’s previous plans. According to reports in the Wrestling Observer written before the Benoit suicide/double homicide WWE Creative originally planned for Rey Mysterio Jr. to make his own return from injury on that show, which takes place in his home area of San Jose, California.

Rey Mysterio’s real name is Oscar Guttierrez. The seven-count indictment of Chris Benoit’s physician Dr. Phil Astin, unveiled Monday, said Astin dispensed drugs including Percocet, Xanax, Lorcet, and Vicoprofen between April 2004 and September 2005. The recipients were identified in the indictment by the initials O.G. and M.J.

There is no corroboration at this time that “O. G.” is actually Guttierrez. (There is also none that it’s not.) It’s possible that “O. G.” isn’t a pro wrestler at all. Still, the decision to remove Mysterio from the main event, and to focus Raw around the heavily muscled Lashley, should raise eyebrows among anyone following this story closely and may be telling as to any changes Vince McMahon may or may not makie in how he conducts his business.

And ironically on this same topic, a new article from the ajc

Control issues cited instead of 'roid rage' in Benoit killings

By KEVIN DUFFY

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/03/07

Domestic violence experts downplay the possible role of steroids in the Chris Benoit killings, saying the tragedy was more about Benoit's anger over control issues at home.

Steroid usage has been linked to angry outbursts called "roid rage," and depression when usage stops.

But in the case of Benoit, who apparently killed his wife and 7-year-old son during the weekend of June 24 before committing suicide, "that was a premeditated act and that's not rage," said Dr. Gary Wadler of New York, who studies the use of drugs in sports.

"I would wonder whether there was some underlying psychiatric abnormality that was unmasked by being on steroids," he said.

Kirsten Rambo, executive director of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, said "it's exactly all about power and control. He was paid to be violent and he took that violence home with him. This is a guy who made a conscious choice to take three lives."

Whether Benoit, 40, had recently taken steroids when he killed his wife, Nancy, 43, and son Daniel, who was mentally impaired, is not yet known. A toxicology report due in a few weeks should answer that question.

Steroids were found at their Fayette County house near Peachtree City. World Wrestling Entertainment, his employer, said Benoit tested negative for steroids in April.

Law enforcement officials twice last week searched the Carrollton office of Benoit's doctor, Phil Astin, who was charged in a federal indictment Monday with selling excessive amounts of prescription drugs, but not steroids. Astin acknowledged he had prescribed testosterone, a steroid, for Benoit. Steroid use can enhance athletic performance.

The killings at the Benoit home occurred over an entire weekend, which does not point to rage, experts said.

"It's sort of counterintuitive that he's raging for three days straight," said Nancy Grigsby, executive director of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence. "Unfortunately, it looks like a garden variety domestic violence incident to me. It's a decision, and they're actually typically quite calm when they give themselves permission to do what they want to do."

Nancy Benoit filed for divorce in 2003 and sought court protection from her husband. In the protective order petition, she said her husband "lost his temper and threatened to strike the petitioner and cause extensive damage to the home." They reconciled later that year and the divorce action was dismissed.

"He wants control over the spouse and the children. When he doesn't get what he wants, he does the killing," DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Clarence Seeliger said. Seeliger is former chairman of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.

"It's a question of disappointment in not being able to dominate his partner," Seeliger said. "He's a murderer. He killed two people. I don't see why he's getting sympathy."

'Medication is a vehicle'

Penn State University epidemiologist Charles Yesalis, who has studied steroids for 30 years, said "anabolic steroid rage is a spontaneous behavior. From what I've read, the death of Benoit and his family wasn't spontaneous. I don't see steroids had much, if anything, to do with this."

"The outside medication is a vehicle, it is not the cause," said Dick Bathrick of Atlanta-based Men Stopping Violence. "He takes the drug. He knows the effect that it has. And he's making the choice to stay with that.

"There's a way in which the culture kind of excuses him — actually idolizes him — for his use of violence," Bathrick continued. "He's not been required to look at himself in the way he uses his power, particularly in terms of this relationship."

Bathrick said in 75 percent of domestic violence cases resulting in death, the victim was threatening to leave.

Benoit will have a private service in Alberta, Canada, in his hometown of Ardrossan, where his parents and ex-wife and two children live.

A memorial service for Nancy Benoit and Daniel is scheduled for July 14 in Daytona Beach, Fla., where her parents, Maureen and Paul Toffoloni, live.

Fragile X or not, Daniel was a slow kid. He was 7 and just graduated kindergarten. Depending on his date of birth, that puts him a year or two behind the average kid.

That means next to nothing. I've known two people who were held back in kindergarten - not because they were slow or had anything mentally wrong with them, but just because they were naturally physically smaller than the other kids their age at the time, and their parents wanted to hold them back just so they wouldn't always be so much smaller than the other kids their age.

It's not surprising that Benoit was already being investigated byt the DEA. I'm sure Rey, Angle, Edge, Orton and whoever else were named in that bust a couple of months ago are being watched very closely.

If Benoit's doctor made a deal and totally opened up, and gave up a bunch of names and admitted everything, would anything technically happen to any of the guys? Let's say that someone else was getting the same sort of treatment that Benoit was receiving. Is it all on the doctor, or would any of them get in a lot of trouble as well?

I doubt it would mean much, legally, to the guys getting the stuff. I think they are far more concerned with snuffing out the dealers than the actual users. Could be hell professionally for some of these guys though. It at least sounds like Rey is going to get depushed in the wake of this steroid news.

You know, there's something I don't understand about McMahon's big man fetish, especially in recent years. They waste a lot of time and energy trying to "train" us and make us like/accept the wrestlers they want. It's the source of half of our complaints about the WWE. "Why push Wrestler A? The crowd is already cheering for Wrestler B, but since Wrestler A is McMahon's darling..."

Sometimes it works: they eventually got HHH over, Cena, even Orton to some extent. Hell, they managed to turn Bradshaw into a guy people liked when he used to be a smark punchline. The point is, eventually all of their huffing and puffing eventually works if they keep at it, and they can make us care about a wrestler nobody gave a shit about?

Soooo... why don't they try to train the audience to accept guys who are smaller and less roided up? Don't tell me it can't work. It might even have to work, if the government is keeping its eye on WWE and its roid needles from now on...

Because Vince/WWE knows better than us, and the "mainstream" fans left WWE in droves are going to come back for a roid monkey, just like they came in droves for Hogan.

Few thoughts from the last few days:

1: Rey would not get depushed because of this steroid issue. Bobby Lashley is getting pushed on RAW despite looking like he is nothing but too much synthetic blended muscles.

2: It should be proven by now that this case isn't roid rage. Roids would not have this much rage. 48 hours is too long to be rage.

3: I believe about 150K people live in Stamford right about now. A noticeable chunk are private wrestling fans. It isn't a stretch that people who are either in High School or at UConn would bullshit on the internet by editing wiki. Many people do it just to have fun(no matter how dumb it could be). It really is a non issue, but people want to make it sound like this was someone knowing directly from Benoit. Which isn't the case. Most people post on Wiki post and then few come and fix the problems.

They came back for the likes of Rock and Austin and neither could be described as strongly musclebound, even with Rock's good physique.

Whether or not they were on steroids (and both men have strong links to steroid use), Rock and Austin were both huge men.

Mitchell speculates that its possible the initials that were on that report are Reys and thus the reason for the change. If it was simply a matter of steroid use, obviously lashley wouldn't be pushed like last night. I just have a feeling mcmahon is pushing lashley because he is on steroids, sort of like rubbing it in the face of the dea. yes i do believe he has that big of an ego and is that stupid.

unfortunately he is supposed to be on tonight according to pwi

Source – 1Wrestling

We can confirm that at least one of the wrestlers initials which were listed in the indictment of Dr. Phil Astin could be a former WCW-WWE wrestler. It states on the 7 count indictment that Dr. Astin improperly prescribed various pain killers and other controlled substances to two individuals listed by the initials "O.G." and "M.J.".

A source who is familiar with Dr. Astin's practice said that at least at least one of the individuals (M.J.) is believed to be a former wrestler who worked for WCW and WWE. Reports are also suggesting that "O.G." could be a current WWE wrestler.

The two individuals listed by the initials "M.J." and "O.G." could be Mark Jindrak and Oscar Gutierrez which is the real name of Rey Mysterio, however this has not been confirmed and is speculation.

"There was a reason guys who lived in the Atlanta area would drive an hour and a half to get to Dr. Astin's office" a source said.

Jindrak will probably back in WWE next week given McMahon's ego.

Didn't he lose an eye in a bar fight he started?

That was Sean O'Haire.

Did SOH actually lose his eye though? I'd heard he had a really bad break in his orbital bone and has bad vision out of that eye now. That's as far as I've heard, so maybe he did eventually lose it to surgery or something.

This is quite a leap to make without really actually knowing anything about the Benoit family home/situation previously. Somewhat ironic her name is Rambo though.

Nevemind even knowing anything about wrestling either - where one of the main objectives aside from entertaining the fans is to protect your opponent. She strikes me as the kind of person who would say that he was paid to be violent in one sentence.. but then turn around and make fun of wrestling for being fake.

Hogan on the case... http://usmagazine.com/hulk_hogan_talks_to_...killer_wrestler

Dunno if it's been posted, but he talks about how Nancy was into devil worship and how she got too close to her character from the Sullivan days... *sigh*

Wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan was shocked when the WWE’s Chris Benoit, 40, murdered his wife, Nancy, and son, Daniel, 7, then committed suicide the weekend of June 23.

“He was peaceful and kept to himself,” he tells Us.

Hogan, who last saw Benoit in March, says he wonders what pushed the wrestler over the edge. "I think it had to be something personal, a domestic problem between him and his wife."

And Hogan tells US the wrestler’s wife (and WWE costar) had a dark side.

“She was into devil-worship stuff. It was part of her [wrestling] character, but [she was] somebody who gets so close to their character, someone who gets into their character too much. Sometimes these people believe their own publicity.”
