This Week In Baseball 7/16 - 7/22

Accardo's been really good this year, most teams would love to have a closer with an ERA around 2.70. The balk sucks, but that shit happens sometimes.

Oh, and no rain tomorrow, plz.

My favorite baseball team won and now sports the highest win percentage in the league. And they did in the stadium equivalent of a nemisis, the Metrodome (in a 1-0 game, nonetheless).

Yea that 1-0 game was pretty much a pitcher's duel. Tough loss for Garza to take as he went 7 innings and only surrendered three hits with the only run given up coming on an error by Bartlett in the 6th inning that put Inge on.

Of course the Tigers deserved to win regardless as they were creating a lot of offensive action by having eight runners left on base versus the Twins four and had more viable scoring chances through most of the game (with the exception of the sixth when the Twins put two men on with one out and Mauer and Cuddyer proceeded to strike out).

My favorite team lost because their new "acquisition" decided to channel the spirit of Michael Barrett throughout the game.

It's been a while since the Cubs lost ground.

Mauer was screwed on that strike call.

8 shutouts. Three by a 1-0 final.

22 times scoring 2 runs or fewer.

My 2nd favorite pitcher won a game and my favorite pitcher pitches tomorrow night! Yay, hopefully they'll take 2 of 3 from Seattle and catch Oakland at a real bad time and maybe sweep them..

I just had a giddy thought of the possibility that the Os rotation next year could be Bedard/Guthrie/Loewen/Penn/Olson. I honestly think they're going to try and trade Daniel Cabrera and give up on him. Trachsel and Benson will be gone and Wright will probably either be gone or out in the Bullpen.

It's been happening more often than not lately. Since May 24, he's got an ERA over 6.

Does Hughes not qualify because he's been injured?

Chamberlain has quickly become an "untouchable" in the system and I've even heard that some like him better than Hughes.

If they go by service time, Hughes has exceeded 45 days on the MLB roster.

108 Ks in 74 innings for Chamberlain. Ian Kennedy meanwhile has 123 Ks in 106.2 innings. The Yankees have some damned good young pitching for once.

They'll trade it away for a quick fix.

Bobby Livingston had a decent start yesterday for the Reds, giving up 2 earned runs in 5 innings. He got in trouble a lot, so it wasn't great or anything. However, he went 4-4 at the plate, beating out a bunt and an infield hit. His last start was months ago and he gave up one run in 6 2/3. This has been a pretty good pick-up by Wayne Krivsky, as he got him off the waiver wire in a weird way. He was picked up off waivers and was immediately traded to the Phillies. Krivsky was monitoring the waiver wire at the time, thought it was against the rules and notified the league. They agreed it was against the rules, and he was placed back into waivers. The Reds were the next team in line, and voila!

I agreed with the waiver decision, for what it's worth. The Phillies and Devil Rays were clearly circumventing the system. That said, Livingston has allowed 25 hits in 17 innings, and struck out five batters. It's smoke and mirrors.

Yeah, I think everyone agreed with the waiver decision there except for the Rays and Phils. I'm not saying Livingston is the next Glavine, though, just that it was a nice pickup through the waiver wire scenario. I mentioned that he gets in trouble a lot, but he tends to "bend but not break." Maybe it's just me, but he doesn't seem to get hammered, just gives up a lot of singles or walks. If he can stay a ground ball pitcher and stay ahead in the count, he could develop into a nice 3rd or 4th starter.

I don't know what's more surprising. That the Phillies hammered 15 runs and 26 hits, or that J.D. Durbin only allowed one.

Waiver wire hot potato JD Durbin only gave up one run? That's the most shocking thing I've heard all week.

Chamberlain is untouchable. Not sure about Kennedy.

no one is untouchable if Steinbrenner demands they win now.

Edit: Like if they miss out on the playoffs this year you can expect a massive overhaul with trades and over priced free agents galore.

Yeah no. Steinbrenner hasn't been the same, and Cashman isn't trading any young pitchers. You think Teixeira wasn't offered for any of them yet? They are building around Wang, Hughes, and Chamberlain. Some think Chamberlain has better stuff than Hughes, so there's no way he's going.

Maybe if Steinbrenner was still conscious and making decisions for this team. Cashman has no intention of trading off the future for a rental or quick fix. This team is working to get younger and Hughes, Chamberlain and the posse of young pitchers will be a cornerstone of that movement.

The advantage the Yankees have is that they have nearly a half-dozen pitchers such as Tyler Clippard that they CAN comfortably deal and not hurt the franchise long term.

And for the reputation, the only prospect of any note the Yankees have dealt in the last three years was Ramon Ramirez, who fell off the table this year. The last time they dealt a good young player was the Javy Vazquez trade, in December of 2003.

The Cubs are laying a severe beatdown on the Giants right now through 5 innings, leading 9-0 thanks to a 5 RBI performance so far by catcher Koyie Hill who I guess is feeling Jason Kendall breathing down his neck or something.

Lou went ahead and pulled Zambrano after he threw 5 shutout innings because he just isn't needed with a lead that big.
