This Week in Baseball 7/30 - 8/5

Lohse has a career ERA of 1.40 (in three starts) against the Phillies, so perhaps Gillick saw the best of what he had to offer. You think J.D. Durbin is a better bet going forward?

I figured the Gagne trade was false, because Delcarmen was the reason that the Red Sox couldn't land Jermaine Dye. They were ready to give up Wily Mo Pena, but not Delcarmen.

Probably not, but with the success of Kyle Kendrick why not give Maloney a shot at the job. My problem is that you give up a legitimate prospect (not A list, but a guy performing well in AA) for a guy who throughout his career has been a mediocre player. Why give up anything for that caliber of performance? Let Brian Mazone come up and be mediocre.

Gagne? Do the Red Sox need another closer?

And what are we to do with Dye? Platoon him with Drew?

Are we dealing just to look like we're doing something here?

It appears that someone jumped the gun on the Gagne deal, so I don't think that one's going to happen. The Red Sox could use another righty in the pen though. MDC has played nice but he's a total unknown commodity down the stretch.

As far as Dye, they told him he'd play 5 days a week. To me, that indicates that Papi's going to the DL or at least needs multiple days off. He'd go to LF and Manny to DH while Ortiz sits, then spell Drew in right against lefties.

The Red Sox, on the surface, appear to be going for it this year. They are willing to part with a few pieces to make that happen.

I'm a little annoyed that the Braves are probably going to get Texiera, but there's no doubt that they're taking a pretty big risk in making the trade. Saltalamacchia seems to have the potential to become one of the game's best catchers, and Andrus is one of the strongest prospects in the Braves' farm system. Even if Texiera's open to the idea of signing with Atlanta, he's no doubt going to ask for the moon and the stars in return for his services.

Meanwhile, the Mets apparently are close to getting Luis Castillo. I can certainly live with him and Ruben Gotay splitting time at second, and from I've heard, New York's not giving up much at all in the deal.

Couple points to respond to posters on the Phillies' deal. First Brian Mazone can not be called up. He requested his release and is pitching in Korea. Second, the rotation is already staffed by two starters with poor peripherals in Kyle Kendrick and J.D. Durbin. The bottom could fall out on one or both of them and the Phils really didn't have a pitcher in the minors to fall back on.

When chasing a pennant, you deal the prospects you think won't help you in the future, in this case a starter who won't be in your top five. I've looked at Maloney's stats, even seen him live twice, and I still can't form a solid opinion. I just don't know. I think this trade is reasonable in that if Maloney succeeds, he's not an ace. The Phillies needed to make this move to compete for a division title.

Out of the players that have moved so far, who do you believe will have the biggest impact for their new team? Maybe we can revisit this question after tomorrow night.

Kevin Garnett to the Celtics. Oh, you mean baseball?

I think we need to wait until tomorrow evening to have any sort of perspective. If Teixeira and Dotel end up in Atlanta, that's your winner. They go from competitive team to NL favorites, at least in my opinion.

So I got a dilemma. I have a free evening tomorrow and am considering going to the Dodgers/Giants game. I can get tix still but do I want to spend the cash to go just on the hope Barry hits 755 even though I'm a Dodger fan?

Absolutely. You'll kick yourself if you're not there for it. Besides, why pass up a game?

Cheer or boo, it's a big moment in the history of baseball. I'd go just for that. And, like Al said, it's a game; why pass it up? Shit, if I don't have anything to do, I'll go watch little kids playing pick-up softball games at the park down my street.

With the sudden desperate need for a healthy starting pitcher the Dodgers are talking to the A's about Joe Blanton according Buster Olney. He is arb eligible after this season but considering the A's can keep him under a controlled price for another three seasons the Dodgers would have to give up some very good talent to pry him away. He's far from a great starter but finding a young, healthy one who can give you 200+ solid innings isn't always easy to find. I think Beane will have to be blown away to do a move here as the A's would have a gaping hole in their rotation next year if they move Blanton as they have no one in minors who can a major difference.

He's getting one more look, than they'll probably bring him up. If we can swing a deal for Gagne, get rid of Farnsworth and bring up Chamberlain, a bullpen up Vizcaino, Proctor, Chamberlain, Gagne, Myers, and whoever else (Henn, Villone, Igawa) setting up Rivera looks pretty good.

Well, the New York fans DEMAND a winner...

Seriously, that's just disgusting on every level. First to kill someone. Second to kill your Mom. Third to do it over something as trivial as baseball. Absolutely disgusting.
