Now back to the Phillies game. I'd like to say I'm done as well. I don't want to discount their chances of making the postseason or count them out of it all. But this is an incredibly frustrating team to watch. Their bullpen is abysmal. Quite frankly, it's not fun to watch a game. And if I'm not enjoying the games, what the heck am I doing watching them? Sometimes it's better to take a step back from things.

Bullpen wasn't really the #1 problem. Tom Gordon pitched fine. Brett Myers was a little shaky, yes, but if Chris Roberson catches those 2 bloops in the 8th like any competent RF would have, the Phillies walk out w/ an easy win. He then has a chance to redeem himself in the 9th, and botched that, too.

 

So, to reiterate, fuck Chris Roberson.

Brandon Phillips is two homers and three stolen bases shy of becoming the second 30-30 player at second base. Alfonso Soriano did it before he moved to the outfield.

Frank "Wildfire" Schulte, a right fielder on the last Cubs dynasty. I never would have guessed he hit 20+ home runs in the dead ball era. If you ever want a fluke season, Schulte set career highs in doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs (not an official stat at the time), walks, OBP and slugging percentage. He's one of only five players who hit 20 home runs in a season before 1920, and didn't play on the 1884 Chicago White Stockings*.

 

*That club played in a park with an extremely short porch in left field, I believe in front of a lake. Balls hit past the fence were considered doubles except in 1884, when they were home runs. Cap Anson, Fred Pfeffer, Abner Dalrymple and Ned Williamson all hit 20+ home runs. No wonder the rule change only lasted one season.

I will be physically ill if the Cardinals win this division with Pujols crippled, Rolen out for the year, Encarnacion being decapitated, Edmonds unaware of which city he's in, a rotation featuring Kip Wells, and Tony La Russa threatening to assault reporters with weapons. Last year, I gave the Cardinals the benefit of the doubt, that they weren't as bad as the record indicated, but this year, they're really bad. If the Cubs don't win it this year, they're sunk for, well, possibly the next five years, at least.

If the Cubs don't win, at least they can point to a much improved winning percentage. I think it was a successful season either way.

With the amount of money spent on the team in a division of this dubious calibre, anything less than first place is abject failure. I think I picked the team to win 77 games, right? Yeah, that would be an improvement over 66, of course, but it doesn't matter. Too much money spent on this team, and with the sale of the Chicago Tribune in doubt, it's possible that the club will be almost completely handcuffed this offseason, with very little to add to the backloaded contracts of Alfonso Soriano and Mark DeRosa. Jim Hendry is almost certainly out the door, though, so I guess that's good.

 

The Cubs' farm system is scary bad, by the way. Our #1 prospect, Felix Pie, has proven to be a Mendoza Line hitter and baseball stupid. (Meanwhile, Rick Ankiel is Babe Ruth. Cardinal Magic, indeed.) The system is so bleak, we couldn't even get rid of failed prospect Will Ohman, who had almost certainly punched his ticket with the "you can't demote me, I'm injured" stunt. Eric Patterson isn't as baseball retarded as his older brother, but struggles with basic fundamentals like "arriving at the workplace." There's nothing in the pipeline and no money to spend. The future is grim for this organization.

You know what's truly hilarious about the notion of the Cardinals making the playoffs? I bet they would at least win the first round and make the NLCS.

 

I think the Cubs will likely be screwed when they have to go to STL for a 4 game series. For what it's worth the Cardinals have 13 road games and 11 home left, the Cubs have 16 on the road compared to 7 at home, and the Brewers have 10 at home and 13 on the road.

Pie's young yet, don't count him out. They have a few good prospects, enough that they don't rank in the bottom third as an organization.
