Some of those bottom teams need to get rid of their crappy owners (something the Brewers did and now they're in the middle of the pack in terms of spending). Nationals can be excused somewhat since they're basically in an expansion franchise situation.

No amount of money will guarantee anything, so why spend any money at all? $100 mil will get you into the playoffs a lot more often than not, especially if you have a good GM.

No amount of money will guarantee anything, so why spend any money at all? $100 mil will get you into the playoffs a lot more often than not, especially if you have a good GM. And usually when you're not getting in the playoffs with a high payroll, you did ONCE or more before then and the players you overpaid for are no longer worth it but you're still on the hook for it (the White Sox being a prime example).

Yeah, making the playoffs is an accomplishment, but the whole thing seems misguided. I wouldn't call this season a story of success.

As far as spending, also remember that good organizations tend to spend more because they manage wisely and open up more revenue streams.

Well, with the exception of Aramis and Soriano, who seem to be the only Cubs who felt like showing up for this damn series. DeRosa is swinging at sliders like he's never seen them in his life and Jacque apparently thought he was out on the links playing 18 holes. Here's hoping the Padres do the work for the Cubs, because they apparently can't do it themselves.

Cubs fail to beat the Marlins in 2007. I called it, though.

Baker then retorted "You can't call it a underachieving season. Their pitchers, early on in the season, were pitching terribly." What I would pay to have a camera on Ravech's face after that. Ravech just sighed and moved on to the next segment after that exchange.

One of their analysts was saying that this year might be Joe Torre's finest work as a manager because he took a team that no one thought could compete (really...?) and kept them in the race all year. According to this dolt, the Yankees were in a clear rebuilding mode this year and weren't expected them to make a run at the playoffs. It was too much for me to handle. I had to turn the channel.
