Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 It's definitely gotten a lot better the last few years, in terms of competitive parity. Some of those bottom teams need to get rid of their crappy owners (something the Brewers did and now they're in the middle of the pack in terms of spending). Nationals can be excused somewhat since they're basically in an expansion franchise situation.
Guest Gym Class Fallout Report post Posted September 27, 2007 I guess the new Rays owners are supposed to be better, but I really have no expectations for that club, ever.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 $100MM doesn't guarantee anything, so it's stupid to spend that much. No amount of money will guarantee anything, so why spend any money at all? $100 mil will get you into the playoffs a lot more often than not, especially if you have a good GM. Guest Gym Class Fallout Report post Posted September 27, 2007 I'd say 90 is the threshold for when you run the risk of being extremely wasteful.

And usually when you're not getting in the playoffs with a high payroll, you did ONCE or more before then and the players you overpaid for are no longer worth it but you're still on the hook for it (the White Sox being a prime example). Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 What's the deal with the Yankees having an insane celebration when their $200 million team barely squeaked into the wild card? Yeah, making the playoffs is an accomplishment, but the whole thing seems misguided. I wouldn't call this season a story of success.
Guest Gym Class Fallout Report post Posted September 27, 2007 Ned Yost suspended for tonight's game against the Padres. Now they can't lose! Cubs about to lose their tenth straight game to the Marlins.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 They were left for dead a few times this season and had an insane 2nd half to get in. I'd celebrate too. And please. The Red Sox celebrated that victory over the Devil Rays a few weeks ago like they won the World Series.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 Thank goodness the Padres are in Milwaukee. Now I can find out the result of the games relatively early. As far as spending, also remember that good organizations tend to spend more because they manage wisely and open up more revenue streams.

Guest Gym Class Fallout Report post Posted September 27, 2007 The Cubs are a bad joke. Brenly made me laugh, though, re: a botched double play that put a run on, "he could've just run over to third to get the out there, however, that would've required actual physical activity from Miguel Cabrera"

USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 The Cubs would have at least two homers today if they weren't playing on a football field with fences. So the Cubs can't hit it 100 yards (300 feet)? When most parks have 350+ feet dimensions? How sad.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 The way the Cubs are swinging the bats right now, I doubt they could hit it 50 yards. Well, with the exception of Aramis and Soriano, who seem to be the only Cubs who felt like showing up for this damn series. DeRosa is swinging at sliders like he's never seen them in his life and Jacque apparently thought he was out on the links playing 18 holes. Here's hoping the Padres do the work for the Cubs, because they apparently can't do it themselves.

Cubs fail to beat the Marlins in 2007. I called it, though.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2007 I'm aware of the actual dimension, but to call it a "football" field sorta lessens the impact.

Yeah, making the playoffs is an accomplishment, but the whole thing seems misguided. I wouldn't call this season a story of success. There was a hilarious argument last night on BBTN with Ravech and I believe Dusty Baker. After they cut away from the Yankees/Rays feed, complete with Brian Kay (?) deeming this season a story of perseverance and courage, Ravech wondered aloud, with a $200 million budget, whether it should rather be labeled a season of underachieving. Baker then retorted "You can't call it a underachieving season. Their pitchers, early on in the season, were pitching terribly." What I would pay to have a camera on Ravech's face after that. Ravech just sighed and moved on to the next segment after that exchange.

Ravech just sighed and moved on to the next segment after that exchange. That's hilarious. I heard something similar on some ESPN show a few weeks back. One of their analysts was saying that this year might be Joe Torre's finest work as a manager because he took a team that no one thought could compete (really...?) and kept them in the race all year. According to this dolt, the Yankees were in a clear rebuilding mode this year and weren't expected them to make a run at the playoffs. It was too much for me to handle. I had to turn the channel. UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2007 Rollins is so winning the MVP unless the Rockies sweep the Snakes. Got tickets for tomorrow night at the Cit, "LADIES NIGHT" baby! Bring on the Nats! Braves have mailed this game in offensively and defensively. "hurting him as a player." He must be some player then to be hurting and lead the league in RBI, and would likely lead in HRs if not hurt earlier in the year. I do agree though, his "feast or famine" technique is holding him back from even bigger numbers and hurts the team at times.
