They're down 2-0, but the Rockies' best chance at making this a series is coming in the next two games at home and against Dice-K (up and down in the postseason) and Lester (who can't make it past the 5th even under the best of circumstances). I still think this has a chance to go 6, but that now means getting past Beckett in Game 5.

Why in God's name are the games starting so damn late? I know they may be trying to put the game on at a decent time on the west coast, but there is no need for a game that doesn't go into extra innings to end after midnight on the east coast.

I wouldn't have a problem with the start time if they would just cut out the crap from 8:00 to 8:30. Do the national anthem for the live crowd around 7:45 or so, then when the TV coverage starts at 8 they can just go right to the game at 8:05. As it is now the coverage starts at 8 and they just jerk off for half an hour.

For those that are constantly complaining about start times (and I really don't blame you), what would be a better atlernative? Is there a solution out there that would be fair to everyone? I am an 8-5 working man on the west coast and with traffic and all, I usually get home from work around six (9 ET). I really don't want to miss 2/3 of the game because of a 7ET start time.

Start the games at 7-7:30 local time. So when they're in Boston it starts at 7:30est and the west coast misses some of it. Then in Colorado it's 7:30mst and the east coast has to stay up a little bit.

I don't understand why we need to pander to the west coast in a series mostly being watched by people in the eastern and central time zones. As has been said countless times, these games going to 11.30 (and that's for me: past midnight on the east coast) are unacceptable and counterintuitive to cultivating a new generation of fans. The only time I really enjoy midnight baseball is when the Cubs are on a west coast swing in July or something. By this time of year, I get sleepier earlier, and I really can't be bothered to stay up watching baseball anymore. (Stupid chat rooms help.) I shouldn't have to feel that way.

1. Start the game promptly at 8:05pm ET. At the very least, you can tune into the beginning of the game on the radio.

 

2. Start games earlier on weekends. I don't subscribe to the weekday day game theory. That's a pipe dream for sportswriters with a deadline. But why should I wait until 8:37 to watch a game on a Sunday. Do you guys have late church too?

 

3. Decrease time between innings. I clocked about 2:45 on average between broadcast innings. That's outrageous. Minor league games usually allow 90 seconds.

 

4. Stop wasting so much time during the game. Put pitchers on a clock. If the catcher has to talk to the pitcher, that's a mound visit. Don't allow batters to step out during an at bat. Last night's game lasted 3 hours and 38 minutes. For a 2-1 game. I've been to separate games that saw 33 and 31 runs scored apiece, and both games did not last that long. A game that wastes that much time can not possibly be exciting to the average viewer. Honestly, would anyone NOT cheering for the Red Sox have been excited by last night's game?

 

Beyond all that Cheech, how late would you stay up for a game if you had to wake up at 3am the next morning?

I honestly wouldn't stay up past 12 to watch a game in any circumstance other than a Red Sox playoff game and I don't have to be to work until 8. I feel bad for the east coast guys, I really do. I was just pointing out that there are problems with starting the game earlier.

 

You've hit the nail on the head regarding the speed of the game. I DVR'd last nights game because I was held up at work and was able to get through the whole thing in about 2.5 hours. I watched every single ptich. I just fast forwarded through all the extraneous shit. A baseball game shouldn't last more than 3 hours.

I definitely agree that the times of the games are getting outrageous, especially earlier with the NLCS games starting at 10 EST but that was acceptable because both teams playing were in the Mountain/Pacific time zone area. I understand that the people on the West coast don't want to miss games but then everyone else in the country suffers by having to stay up really late when they have work to go to in the morning.

 

I agree that it would help to decrease commercial breaks (but we all know that change isn't going to happen) and start the game PROMPTLY when its on the air. I agree with al that it is ridiculous that they do nothing for 30 minutes before game time. I don't really care to see the Star Bangled Banner sung every single night and hearing Joe Buck say a whole lot of nothing doesn't appeal to me either.

 

I shudder to think how late game 3 is going to do because Dice-K takes forever to pitch.

Exactly. Well except for those fans in Denver... but yeah the World Series should really be pandered to the region in which the participants are from. I don't give a shit about this series, so they can worry about the East coast fans.

Francona said today that it will be Ortiz starting at 1B in game 3 with Youkilis sitting. Ellsbury will lead off with Pedroia moving down one spot and the rest of the order staying the same.

I'm really not agreeing with that decision. I know its hard to sit Ortiz but Youkilis has been a man possessed since the ALCS. Also, with Ortiz's knee trouble it might not be the best of ideas to make him play defense. I guess Terry figures he can get one good game from Ortiz to get the series to 3-0 and then put Youkilis in for games 4 and 5 in Denver.

Youkilis will probably come in in the later innings as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement. I would hope Francona wouldn't leave Ortiz out there for a potential Buckner situation. Having Ortiz in the lineup gives you so many more benefits, though, because of the intimidation factor, IMO.

 

He'll probably sit out Game 5 against Francis, though.
