NHL January 08

I hate the city of Montreal, its hockey team and the faux-soccer fans that travel to other cities.

I hope a pipebomb explodes in the Bell Center.

I do too if the Forum was still in decent condition and not a fucking mall.

I bet there are a lot of critics (especially Hockey News) that Montreal won't have a solid PP this year. I guess they were wrong.

Alexander Ovechkin signed a contract extension.

6 years, 54 million. Hopefully Eklund will stop posting his stupid trade rumors now.

Holy shit.

The number I found was from RDS.

Yeah I saw that number too. Holy shit was exactly what I was thinking when TSN put the other one out there. Crazy to think that he got that without an agent.

Ted Leonsis has never exactly been allergic to spending money on big names (see: Jagr, Jaromir).

That contract is insane. $9 million a season for the first 6 years, $10 million per for the next seven. They'd better hope the cap goes way up, or else Washington is going to be in the basement for the foreseeable future.

I hadn't even considered the cap, as crazy as that sounds. I would have thought Leonsis must have really sold Ovechkin to the effect of "13 years. If we want you for that long, that shows we're committed to being a winner for a long time." Factor in CC's salary cap thing, and Leonsis must be either crazy, or know somerthing really really big that we don't.

I just hope when the new CBA starts that there is no fixed salary cap. Imagine a cap at 43 million and Ovechkin salary...

Ah fuck it. It's the fucking Capitals. No one gives a shit about them.

So Toskala re-injured his groin and the Leafs called up Justin Pogge for tomorrow nights game. Can Pogge carry this plug team to the playoffs or are the Leafs this pitiful.

Doesn't matter how well your goalie plays if your team doesn't score. I'd say Pogge plays well, but still ends up losing 2-1 or something along those lines.

Great game this afternoon. Bruins take it 4-3 in oooooovertime.

The refs were, to put it best, inconsistant all afternoon, but when they finally swallowed the whistles, there was some good action end-to-end.

Milan Lucic may have officially arrived as well, despite not scoring a goal. He went in for a hit against Smith near the end of the first and caught his nose on the dasher. It required stitches and a visor being put onto his helmet. He got hit in the open ice in the second, which reopened the cut and required more stitches and one of those peewee plastic masks on his helmet. Still, he set up a scoring chance and played well with that.

In his post game comments, with a cut on the left side of his nose and blood all over his face, Lucic supplied, "This is a sad, sad day for my modeling career."

I realised I never posted about my hockey experience. The Leafs have been so disgustingly awful that talking hockey depresses me.

Hockey in Raleigh was fun. The RBC Arena had a metal detector which made me laugh and there were lots of Hurricane related puns. The Hurricanes had lots of signs and videos talking about their ten years of tradition which caused me to roll my eyes and voice my displeasure to the people at the game with me.

Lots of Hurricanes jerseys, and stupid videos on the video screen. Apparently, getting to ride the Zamboni is considered a huge deal. Ric Flair shows up on the video screen all the time to get people to woooo.

The game itself was really good. Carolina was flat for much of the game, but the third period was great back and forth hockey. Even though I didn't care for either team, I was on the edge of my seat most of the third, going crazy for everything. I was also happy Atlanta won in OT, since I hate shootouts.

Dany Heatley is out 4-6 weeks with a separated shoulder after going shoulder-first into the boards in last night's win over Detroit.

That is...not good news. The only positive spin I can put on that is that at least it stretches over the All-Star break and they won't play as many games in that time.

In other news, I think the Leafs' goal differential in the third period and OT this season is up to about -120.

I'm surprised that no one is making a comment of Sundin shoving a linesman at the end of the game. I'm sure he's going to get fined for it.

Take your sigh of relief, CC. Spezza should be back Tuesday against the Caps.

Still, Heatley's streak of 283 consecutive games played will end in Landover.

Well, that's good. I'd hate to have two of our top three scorers out against a team that'll probably score a dozen goals against us.

Heatley's streak ended last night against the Islanders, though.

CG: Your boy Marc Savard is replacing Heatley at the All-Star game.

re

Leaf notes:

Cliff Fletcher the new possible GM at Leaf Nation? I'm also told that Nikolai Borshevski and Dave Ellitt are returning as well.

I'm picking Washington on Pro*Line tomorrow (ten games for the jackpot instead of the usual 13 or 14. I gotta do it).

You're a rational human being, but you're also a Sens fan - can, or should you, talk me out of this?

Edit: I'll let your death pool/KKK Bowl records slide :P

Fuck, I wanted to post the Fletcher news, simply because I brought up Todd Gill in Tsar's Question thread.

Haha, Todd Gill. He owns and coaches the local Jr. A team.

Also, the guy from Cox Bloc is named Godd Till, which is a fitting tribute.

I had the strangest dream last night.

Now, I can't remember it perfectly, but I was observing a meeting of the Ducks. I think it was in a coffee shop. Their sitting order was arranged as if they were doing Bible study night or something. Teemu Selanne was there, wearing all black, explaining his reasons for not deciding on retiring. Then the other players started arguing with him on how his stance is detrimental to the team. I think it ended with Teemu yelling a lot.

I would take this to a dream specialist here, but the Japanese don't really know hockey. Anyway, if anyone else has had some cool dreams involving the Mighty Ducks, feel free to share.

I think you're good to go. Washington is the one team that just owns the Sens, for whatever bizarre reason. The Caps have won 7 out of 10 against Ottawa going back to two seasons ago. And they're usually pretty high-scoring games, which doesn't bode well for a team missing its best goal scorer.

What's Cox Bloc? Hopefully satirical, if a guy's name is God.
