2008 Mythical National Championship Game

Recommended Posts

Going into the final week of the regular season it seemed the majority of us were excited about the possibility of a fresh MNC match-up of West Virginia vs. Missouri that would a program defining game for both teams. Well it didn't quite workout that way and we ended up with two traditional powers who pretty much backed their way into it. That being said after the lackluster slate of BCS games to this point I'm convinced this will end up being an instant classic that Ohio State eeks out (just like the 2003 Fiesta Bowl) and then everyone can say "Hey the BCS works!" The game does have potential historical significance as if LSU wins they would become the first two loss MNC since 1960 (Minnesota) and the first ever two loss, post-bowl MNC. Personally I think that would be a good thing as I think one of the reasons some are squeamish about the idea of a true playoff system is that two or three loss teams would have a shot at winning it.

I've never been less interested in a big time football game. I don't know if it's the uninspring teams, the culmination of a shitty season or the fact that I checked out on the college season weeks ago, but there is nothing here to catch my interest. Seems like most of my friends feel the same way too. First time we haven't gotten together for a BCS Champioship party in at least 5 years.

The regular season was infinitely more exciting that the postseason this year. There just isn't a marquee matchup, and that's directly related to all the upsets that made the regular season terrific.

I'll watch it but I'm not too confidant it will be great or anything. The Bowls haven't been all bad this year...some of the weak bowls were fun, Wisc-Tenn & Mich-Fla were both really good games. This season, though, more than any other previously (and they ll point in the same direction at the end) highlights the need for a playoff.

My charge for the bowl season died along with my team on New Year's day. This is the first time in the past 7 years I haven't watched any of the BCS games. I'll probably watch tonight, but I'm kind of checked out on it too. I agree that none of the big BCS matchups felt particularly interesting, as selection fuck-ups (Kansas over Missouri?) and some obvious mismatches (USC/Illinois, Georgia/Hawaii) made them more like third-week-of-September games than postseason epics.

It definitely will feel weird watching an LSU game without Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson. They must have done about half a dozen of them this season.

I don't care. It would've been better for college football if Mizzou and West Virginia had won their games to close out the regular season.

I fail to believe that it would have been better. West Virginia and Ohio State looked like the exact same team before the Pitt game.

I think its close tonight. I am a homer so I will take Ohio State, but I cannot really see it being a +7 point game either way unless there is a late score.

I'm talking more about the "two teams lose to hand two other teams National Title Game spots" thing. That (and this) was a shitty way to end an otherwise good season.

Well it was interesting for a quarter and a half. We have our two loss MNC and things might never be the same again.

Came home from work all jazzed about watching this game even if it was only the second half. LSU goes up 31-10 and I went to find something else to do.

The question is does Tressel start getting a choker moniker after this game? He gets them to the big shot and loses in consecutive years and neither game is even close.

Slayer, I was about to say something along those lines. OSU is eerily similar to OU in that regard, but at least they have beaten some teams in the BCS outside of their national title debacles.

Either way I'm sick of seeing both teams.

Unfortunately there's an unwritten edict in the media that once you get a ring, you're immune from the C-word ever again, even if you demonstrate as much after winning said ring

Though given the circumstances of the Luck Buckeyes' 2002 championship, it definitely doesn't shine a favorable light on him

Crow, crow crow crow, CROW!

But seriously Herbie is an idiot. The bottom line is if a Big 10 team goes undefeated they will go to the BCS Title game, one or two losses? In the herd with everyone else.

Maybe Georgia finally has their breakout year after being on the brink of a tantric orgasm for the last five years

This can't happen. I will surely die.
