UFC 83 - Serra vs. St. Pierre 2

Recommended Posts

Machida's been great in the UFC but his best moment just may be telling Sokodjou to go and train kung-fu in the jungle.

I've always followed UFC casually (occasional PPV's at bars, reading results) but this is the first PPV I ordered myself and I enjoyed it quite a bit. GSP winning was great and having his victory party at La Cage aux Sports is even better.

Some observations of mine:

-I wish the restaurant I was watching this at had the volume up louder. I would have loved to have heard the crowd crapping all over Starnes. I just wish Quarry would have gone in for the kill at some point and finished him off. What was Quarry's Rocky IV line?

-Bocek's face looked like pure hell by the end of the fight with Danzig. It made for a great visual.

-I'm real glad Bisping beat the tar out of McCarthy after the early match taunting. I would have loved to have heard the "Knock Him Out" chant by the crowd.

-I expected Serra to lose tonight, but I also expected him to put up at least some offense. Serra looked gassed very early, while GSP looked like a million bucks.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change.

something like that

That's awesome... I wish I could have heard that.

I was expecting Serra to come out first, even though he's the champ

Don't know if this was GSP's idea, but a) he didn't come out with the interim belt, and b) there was no announcement of fighting for the "undisputed title"...

BTW, do you think Fitch is shitting his pants right about now?

Awesome, awesome, awesome, show. I don't think TV could do the reaction GSP got justice. Everyone was standing on their feet throughout the fight, nobody was sitting. We all went ape-shit for every single fucking thing GSP did. Some notes on the prelims...

- Stout/Clementi was really good. Sam tried hard to avoid the takedown and did well to stifle Clementis attacks on the ground. But it seemed like all of his effort was concentrated on doing that, and when they were standing he didn't pull the trigger until it was too late. If it went extra rounds, he probably could have won it cause he was hurting Clementi at the end and almost at will. However, before that, Clementi was easily winning the standing exchanges, mixing his punches up and using some nice head movement.

- Cain/Morris was basically a one-sided fight. Nothing really to say beyond that.

- MacDonald/Doerkson was nuts. First MacDonald had Joe in a choke that had people going "oh shit!" and then Doerkson did his best attempts to take MacDonalds arm home with him (How the fuck did Jason not tap?). Then MacDonald just went house on Joes head in the second round when he got side. How the fuck did Meltzer score the first for MacDonald?

- Herman/Maia had me stroking one off. Jesus fuck does Maia have pretty ground game. He worked VERY hard for the takedown early on, and then as the fight progressed he would just pull guard off a failed single. Very slick stuff, had Eddie on the defensive for much of the first, but I was worried at the end that Maia gassed himself out. The triangle finish is probably one of the highlights of the show, imo. God. Damn.

- I thought, when he fought Kalib, Belcher was just posturing when he would take those shots and not throw anything back. Turns out the dude just doesn't know how to counter-punch or defend punches. How the fuck could he lose to Dooms Day? God dammit, Belcher.

I'm Italian, from Long Island and I train under Joey Scarola.

Does he teach you how to blow a great oppurtunity for some pussy? I'm sure Jeremy Jackson is your boxing coach as well right?

I remember when Mik asked who the fuck would wanna train under Joey Scarola, there's your answer... HOLLYWOODSPIKEJENKINS!

The dude is a legit black belt in BJJ with plenty of tournament wins and championships under his belt. According to Sherdog, his MMA record is 4-1, with the loss coming from a decision. The dude fought Mac Danzig, the guy who ended up winning that season and looked great last night, and got caught with an armbar. Shit happens. As far as I know, everything after the show was pretty much bullshit television hype. He did an interview after the show ended and said that the producers edited the show to make him look like a bitch and even Danzig called up and agreed with him.

And damn, GSP did not want to stand with Serra, so he just tossed him for two rounds. Looks like the Hughes fight is next.

It was funny to see fighters go around our section, looking for a place to sit to watch a certain fight. Herman, Follis, MacDonald, all found spots. Herring was around the area too, just chillin and takin photos. Crow and Claveau were around.

Also, I was shocked at how long Dana spent with fans after the QnA.

Also, GSP throwing knees to the body was a great strategy against a guy who was coming off a back injury. Rush saying he had to "make it physical" was apt.

Way to not show up for the fight, Serra.

Very ignorant to say... Serra looked to give it his all, he just got overwhelmed by a stronger fighter. He was doing his best in guard to fight off GSP getting better position. GSP came with a perfect gameplan this fight and mixed his striking with his wrestling.

While I'm sure Joe Scarola is a very good BJJ, it still says a lot that his best friend won't even talk to him after his actions on the show.

I thought the show was good, but being there was probably enough to push it to a much higher level for those that attended it if only for atmosphere alone.

I missed the end of Danzig/Bocek, but it had turned into a massive ass beating by the end of the second round. Danzig looked really good here, and could be a sleeper in the LW division. The division is kind of wide open after BJ/Sherk/Florian, so he could slip in there.

Bisping vs. McCarthy was interesting. McCarthy had an interesting idea, to turtle up everytime Bisping threw shots probably in hope that Bisping would run out of steam. Problem is, those blows broke his fucking arm. A fun little fight, but it kind of proved that turtling up when the opponent is throwing a constant barrage of death shots is not a great idea.

Starnes vs. Quarry suuuuucked...Until the last minute. Nate made me a fan for life with how he mocked Starnes. The running man was awesome, and then covering up his face, throwing out one arm and throwing back and forth slap like motions that made Starnes *RETREAT* was one of the greatest moments in UFC history. Quarry only made himself a bigger face with how they handled it post-fight...and the "YAY!" "BOO!" on camera stuff was fucking fantastic. This is the second fight in a row since his return that Quarry's looked REALLY good. Maybe if he keeps improving, he'll get a shot to inject some life in the MW division.

Franklin vs. Lutter was the fight of two men who had nothing to prove, but even still, good match. Franklin's armbar reversal was EPIC. Lutter is...I dunno. Dude needs to stop fucking fighting at MW, because he's gonna die from that weight cutting. The concept that he walks around at like 200-something, and cuts down to 185 is insane. I HATE that. The fight probably should have been stopped when Franklin was teeing off with those jabs, because Lutter had nothing. It just got worse from there. It was quite evident that Lutter was done from that point on. Franklin needs to think about moving up to LHW again. He will probably never get another shot at Silva, and it wouldn't draw...so why not move up and try that out? He could probably be a top contender in that division.

Main event...I predicted Serra, but I, along with most people, thought GSP would most likely win. People can say Serra got "bitched" or "didn't come to fight", but Serra impressed me, personally. He fared better then Hughes did with GSP, and while everything he tried didn't work, he still TRIED. It wasn't a complete stream rolling, because Serra did everything in his power to restrain GSP. Serra was rolling around, fighting to get guard, everything he could using his jiu jitsu, it just didn't STOP GSP no matter what he did. Serra looked like he got tired, and I'd say that's a combination of coming off his injury, and GSP smothering him. I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch a year down the line, provided Serra drops Hughes or something. There's more money to be made here.

The problem is, is the WW division has now hit the MW's level for having almost...TOO STRONG of a champion. The only other time I've seen this was in PRIDE with Fedor, but there was always the thought that maybe Nog, Mirko, or Josh could beat Fedor due to how PRIDE would separate them for months at a time...but in UFC where they handle things differently...Silva's got no one left to face, outside of Okami which won't draw. GSP just ran through three top of the line guys without a problem. Koscheck, Hughes & Serra all fell to GSP rather easily...Outside of Fitch who CANNOT be looking forward to that fight now, there's no clear contenders. He's decimated everyone else either by direct association or by proxy.

Like I said, by 2009 Josh Koscheck could be the one to dethrone GSP, especially at the rate he is improving. The 1st fight with GSP did him more good then it did bad.

Plus there is always the chance BJ Penn moving up after beating Sherk, he wants GSP badly... And that is a rematch, I'm dying to see.

Also another fighter to watch for 170 is Anthony Johnson... Although he is no where ready for the elite level of WW, I can defiently see him working his way up there. His athletism rivals GSP, very good striking, amazing punching power, he has a good wrestling background, and he's a brown belt in BJJ. Don't even think about mentioning the Rich Clementi fight... He was given one week notice and came to the fight in horrible shape, and he was kicking Clementi's ass until gassing out.
