I think I applied/answered an ad for a clerical position at Primerica, and they called me for an interview for "clerical/customer service" but they tried to by sly about it and not be very descriptive about the job. They said the first thing I would do is come in and watch a short presentation, and if I liked what I saw, I could stay around for an interview, my "WTF" radar started going haywire, so I did some online research and found out it was a big scam and there was no actual "clerical position" available in the first place.....

Funny story.

I went down to the Wal-Mart that was opening up, about 6-7 years ago now, and said "I want a job so I can pay for University!" They gave me a job.

So I went to University. And I got myself a BA in History. And I also was not keen on the idea of being a teacher. Nor did I know what else to do.

Guess where I *still* work?

Fucking Wal-Mart.

Same story, except replace History with English and Wal-Mart with Borders.

Walmart, 6 1/2 years ago, Got degree in marketing, work at Wal-mart still

Lose.

Word. That's exactly what they told me. I was supposed to go this Saturday and I was like, ehm, I have midterms so I'll get back to you guys in the mid-March or so. Assholes.

I'd give you a rundown of the years of schooling, months of on-field learning, and hours spent towards honing my fine craft as a supplier of LAN products to the Northeast, but really: it's a warehouse job my friend got me after I totalled my car 2 1/2 years ago.

10 bucks an hour after 6 years

And you work full time? Damn thats shitty, I started at $14 an hours at my job.

Welcome to the wonderful world of retail and/or service. At pretty much any store, restaurant, or similar business that you might walk into, the employees all get paid jack shit.

About Primerica:

I do the same thing at MetLife, but it is not a multi-level networjking company. Their outlook is "buy term, invest the difference," but they also try to enlist other people to join the company. If you get people working below you, you get overrides on what that person makes. You can make good money doing this, but if you want to get into insurance, you should just get started with a reputable company in the first place. I am in a business networking group that two Primerica people in two different fields, and I am much more repected than they are.

I'm currently going to university and working at Wal-Mart. I've only been there a year and a half and I'm crazy, how do you last 6-7?!

The trick is to just stop caring.

The only think keeping me going currently is that I'm in trade school, so I know I'm gonna be done and have a good-paying job before too long.

Also, Jingus, not every single retail place is like that. I've heard from Costco employees that they get good pay and benefits. 99% of retail places suck, yes, but Costco is apparently a nice place to work.

Full service gas station. Been there 6 years after a friend of my dad's put in a word for me. I started my senior year of high school and graduated college last spring (BS in communications). I've tried careerbuilder and monster.com without any luck yet.

Others that have been successful with CB and Monster: how long did it take to land a job after posting a resume? Or did you apply for a specific job?

Fuck that retail shit. The distribution side is the good life. No customers, no dumbass store managers. Colorful characters. Just read my Warehouse thread!
