UFC 84 - Ill Will

Recommended Posts

Just got in from watching this one, and here are some thoughts:

-I don't know how Lyoto did it, but he survived what looked to be a sure fire submission hold by Ortiz. The majority of the restaurant I was at was behind Lyoto, but they still gave Ortiz props on being able to send a major league scare with that hold. I agree with an earlier post in that Lyoto was pretty evasive for the most part, though.

-I was pulling for Silva (About the only one in the place that was... seemed like everyone was behind Jardine) to win, but I had no idea he'd absolutely drill Jardine the way he did. The last couple of shots he got in were things of beauty. Jardine looked like he had checked out after that one.

-I thought the bell was going to save Sherk in the main event, but B.J. going for the kill was very nice. He was turning Sherk's face into hamburger, and by the looks of things, it would have gotten a lot worse if it had gone into the 4th round.

The 33-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champion showed up, uninvited, with UFC official Jennifer Wenk asking him to leave and not cause a scene. Ortiz at first refused, but after some pleading, got up and seemed to act like he’d made his point in front of the press about not being allowed in. But when girlfriend Jenna Jameson told him to stay put, he changed his mind and went back to his seat.

Wenk, after seeing the press wanted to talk with him, agreed to give him 10 minutes before the official press conference started. That lasted about two questions before Zuffa COO Kirk Hendrick stopped the questioning. But after much discussion and a tense scene with the media that wanted to talk with him and the appearance of four Las Vegas Metropolitan police officers, they agreed to let him participate.

Both Wenk and White said that Ortiz was never banned from the press conference, but that he should have waited for everyone else as the fighters and White came in as a group.

-Meltzer

Tito crashed the press conference. Ha. I'm waiting for more information on this...

KO of the night: Wanderlei

Sub of the night: Palhares

Fight of the night: Gouveia/Reiljic

I agree with all three... they earned their $75k.

I was gonna call Wandy on a quick KO, but I wasn't going to base that off of one KO in the Houston Alexander fight for Jardine. Guess whoever fights him in the future needs to turn into a wild brawler and they'll finish him in under a minute.

Penn looked awesome, which was no surprise if you've seen any of his recent fights at 155. I just think that if you're gonna talk shit before the fight, you don't really need to show that much respect after and be all cutesy with Sherk afterwards. If I was Sherk, I'd be like "Props to the victor, but with all due respect you can still fuck off." Either show respect or be an asshole. I don't know, it's getting to the point where no fighter really comes off as anything less than an asshole lately, especially American fighters. If MMA was made up of entirely of Eastern Europeans and guys like GSP and Wanderlei than I'd give the fighters the respect use to give them, which is why I loved it when Reljic shut Wilson Gouveia's shit-talking bitch ass up. He didn't talk any shit hyping himself up before he came in, he just showed up, went about his business, and won the fight. No post-fight posing over his opponent, no screaming into the mic about how much of a badass he is.

It's probably why I have, and probably always will, like K-1 better. Just pure class with Semmy, Aerts, Bonjasky, Hari... well not Hari, but still. Those guys pride themselves on their skill and the utmost respect they show to opponents, win or loss. Sure there is talking before the fights, but it's not like Bisping or somebody where they just hype themselves up as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Sorry about going off on a tangent, but it's just something I notice more and more with each passing show, and Penn is still a great fighter and I respect him much more than most, I just thought it was an awkward moment for him to bash Sherk one minute then call him out and act like their best buds and it was all fun and respect the entire time when it obviously wasn't.

I second that. BJ saying "Sean, it's all respect" after that fight was pretty fucking transparent.

I just think B.J. didn't want to come off as a total dick. I'm pretty sure he still has little respect for Sherk.

Yves Lavgine trying to fill the void that Big John left is awesome. Lavgine Barrel Roll > Machida Elusiveness

Oh my God, I forgot about that! Probably the greatest moment in MMA in history! Props to Yves for laughing it off and not trying to act like nothing happened, which would have made him look even dumber, IMO.

I can buy that but the thing is (like Average said) that when you lay into a guy that much and change your tune right afterwards it looks fake as hell.

Let me try to start some discussion in this thread...

Machida: enjoyable to watch because of how technical he is? Or just boring?

I personally love watching him fight because he's so fucking skilled, it's silly. He's almost untouchable in there and then he'll just surprise you all of a sudden with an explosive strike or takedown. That's enjoyable for me to watch.

At the same time, I can see where people can call him boring...especially when you have someone like Wanderlei on the same card, but I enjoy watching him fight.

This is what I like about him. Yeah he "runs" or is "elusive" as Rogan puts it, but he scores and lands some good blows before backing up.

Most guys that pull the running BS will throw a jab and then take off. Machida will throw a good combo or a wicked kick (loved the double kick that hit tito in the gut) and then back out. That's awesome. He's doing damage and scoring and then being smart about it.

I was getting annoyed with Tito throwing his hands up and saying "come on man" because he was getting hit and what not. And it's not like Tito really pressed hard at times.

Basically the gameplan for Machida right now is aggression. I'm talkin' Chuck or Wanderlei aggression because right now he's going to pretty much embarrass anybody on their feet at the moment. Rogan made a good point too that Machida isn't a particularly large 205'er and he shrugged off anything Tito pushed on him like nothing.

And goddamn did that triangle have me freaking out. And the liver shot was ungodly.

I enjoy watching Machida immensely for his technical prowess. Its almost as though there is a Blu-Ray section where you can see Machida sizing up his opponent for each attack before he does it. The feignts into a double kick was like watching a video game of sorts.

I just noticed on second viewing that right after the stoppage BJ does in fact run over to Sherk, who is still on the ground, swipe some blood off his face and proceed to lick it off his hand.

On first viewing I thought he was checking on him. Nope.

Machida brings a lot of things to the table that I don't like about boxing. I wouldn't call him boring, but I don't like watching him fight.

Sokoudjou was very impressive last night... He has a bright future ahead of him, he could be a world champion in the next few years.
