This thread is the Favre gaytime. The other thread is for games that don't matter.

If by "compete for the starting job" they mean "Let Favre run a QB sneak on the opening play of every game, and then immediately bench him for Rodgers/Brohm/Flynn the remainder of the game", then by all means let the man compete for the starting job! The streak must live on, and it has to be better than spending the season at home living with that wife of his.

Aaron Rodgers should demand a trade tomorrow.

Tomorrow? After the report the Packers are now going to let Farve compete for the starting job, Rodgers should make the demand around right now. The "future" quarterback of the Packers is going to retire for good before Brett does.

Only way Aaron Rodgers is starting for the Green Bay Packers is if he makes himself the starter in Madden 09. Otherwise, he's screwed.

I'm figuring that Favre could still change his mind tonight.

Yeah but then he'd change his mind back by tomorrow morning so there would be no point. I still believe we'll have three or 45 more "Favre to retire" announcements between now and the start of the season.

Well if he does suck then Green Bay can cut ties with him after the season and not worry about looking back.

I've mentioned it in passing in this thread but if the Packers really thought Rodgers was the undisputed QB of the future they wouldn't have drafted Brohm. Brohm's stock tanked by coming back for an ill advised senior season to play for the debacle known as Steve Kragthorpe. Rodgers is within his rights to now ask for a trade, and he could likely end up as a decent journeyman in the league somewhere.

Favre is likely going to win this competition, unless he completely blows in the pre-season, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers keep him around long enough to get past the Monday Night opener and then trade him to Minnesota after that, avoiding the problem of him coming back to Lambeau.

Well endgame is here: Favre is reinstated by the NFL and will report to Packers camp

Favre reinstated

Well, the article says Favre is going to be reinstated today, but it doesn't say he's reporting to training camp at all. In fact..

Report: Favre to Take the Money

Posted by Mike Florio on August 2, 2008, 6:27 p.m. EDT

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Packers quarterback Brett Favre currently plans to accept the Packers’ shameless bribe marketing deal and un-unretire from the NFL.

Schefter points out that the decision isn’t final, and that it could change and has changed already. As of right now, however, Favre’s inclination is to take the money and not run. Or throw.

Meanwhile, Chris Mortensen of ESPN recently reported that Commissioner Roger Goodell asked for a resolution of the situation by the end of the day on Saturday, and that the Packers are hoping that Favre doesn’t report in time for a Sunday night scrimmage at Lambeau Field. Mort says that family members are urging Favre to get on a plane for Green Bay on Sunday.

As we see it, it’s possible that Favre is putting out the word that he’s taking the money so that he can call a press conference on Sunday and declare that it’s not about the money, it’s never been about the money, and he wants to play football.

We’re told that, if Favre shows up, the team’s plan is to put him at the bottom of the depth chart, continue to try to trade him, and if they can’t they’ll cut him on the eve of the regular season opener.

This came from ProFootballTalk.com, but of course they're talking from some fairly credible sources so I'll let that speak for itself. I think that's personally sort of nuts, but the last sentence of the article is what seems to make the most sense to me if Favre shows up.

Well everything I've heard today (mostly from ESPN) suggests that Favre will compete for the starting job but may also get traded eventually. I guess he's already done his physical, has met with McCarthy, and has gone to QB meetings (or at least he's going to soon).

Sounds like Roger Goodell is making the Packers' decisions for them. How gracious of him to take time out of his busy day to make football operations decisions for the members of his league. If he doesn't have any appointments to shake down the remaining cable systems that don't yet carry the NFL Network, maybe he can swing by Lake Forest and force some other retired quarterback to report to Bears training camp, like perhaps Doug Flutie. I mean, don't get me wrong, when Favre "wins" the "quarterback competition" in training camp, it'll make the Packers a better team and Packers fans will be happy, but it rubs me the wrong way that the commissioner of the league has to override the general manager of the team for it to come to this.

I think having Favre on the team now makes the team worse, because of the distraction being brought on by the media with all this, and because there could be a tremendous quarterback controversy with the locker room, since it's been reported the team is somewhat split in their support of quarterbacks. Whether Favre plays well or not is an entirely different matter; all I know is that the guy cost us the NFC Championship game last year, and this is a very young team that needs to grow up with a fresh new quarterback. If this is the year Favre ends his ironman streak as well, and Rodgers comes in and does a great job (assuming Aaron stays with the team if Favre "wins" the "competition" i.e. doesn't get traded somewhere) then all hell will break loose on the team.

Inspired by today's Dave Dameshek show; is it too early for us to start taking bets on who/what next season's summer QB off-field putting the season in doubt controversy will involve? They've taken on very different shapes, but this year we have Favre, last year was Mike Vick's battling pit bulls and in 2006 we had Roethlisberger almost dying on his motorcycle. I think a guy like Romo or a Matt Leinart seem almost too obvious to be the pick.

You mean the NFC Championship game they wouldn't have even sniffed had it not been for Favre's incredible play all season? That NFC Championship game?

No, Matt. I'm talking about the NFC Championship that Favre helped with, but by far did not lead the Packers to if it wasn't for Ryan Grant's incredible surge late in the year to give the Packers a balanced attack, the development of Greg Jennings, Donald Lee, and James Jones to take the heat off Donald Driver, and the gelling of the offensive line to finally protect Favre's ass from getting blown up every game. And don't forget about the defense as well.

Here's something to noodle about: When's the last time Favre won in the playoffs before this last season? The Packers have won 3 out of their last 10 playoff games, dating all the way back to Super Bowl XXXII. If it wasn't for Brett Favre's Super Bowl ring the year before, he would likely be known as one of the biggest playoff chokers of all time as a quarterback. And, by the way, 2 of those 3 wins were against the Seahawks (the other one was San Francisco) and all three of those wins came at home. The last road playoff game Favre won was at San Francisco, which was the NFC Championship before Super Bowl XXXII.

Yes, we've had a good run of playoff appearances and we're always in it because of Brett. But we're also seemingly out of it because of Brett. Favre even had quite an efficient game against the Giants this year- 19 of 35 for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns, but two interceptions, especially the last one which cost the Packers the game. At home, the frozen tundra, the stuff legends are made of, and he fucking blew it. Almost 4 years exactly before that, we were playing the Eagles in Philly where no one gave us a shot at winning, and almost pulled it out of our ass. 4th and 26 happened, yes, but that was in the fourth quarter, still up by 3 (thanks Darren Sharper). It was Green Bay that won the coin toss at the start of overtime, with Favre again getting the ball, and again throwing a total fucking lame duck pass to end the Packers' playoff hopes.

Is this the guy leading your team? Yeah he killed Denver in overtime this past year with one bullet pass which was freakin' awesome, and he took advantage of a pass-happy offense against some awful secondaries for a month or two, but the team made it to the championship, not him alone. If that were true, where were the Packers' playoff appearances in 2005 and 2006?

So if I understand the latest news.... Brett isn't going to practice because he won't unless he's considered the starter. McCarthy told him you have to accept Rodgers is #1. Brett said "fuck it trade me in the division..." Packers said "Nope" "Just stay away from practice til you quit being a bitch then"

According to Jay Glazer, it now seems very unlikely that Favre will play for the Packers this year. The sticking point is that Favre wants to play in the NFC North, but the Packers would like to trade him to one of the two non-division teams that's shown interest--the Jets or the Bucs. So even though Brett is now in Green Bay and on the active roster, it feels like this story has taken the wayback machine to about two weeks ago. This is all stuff that we already knew.

My amended bold prediction, based on nothing, is that Aaron Rodgers will suck a dick this year and the Packers will come to regret jettisoning Favre. Heads will roll come next offseason.

The thing is, if Brett is our starter, then I demand a super bowl with all the drama he has caused this offseason, but with Aaron Rodgers as the starter, I will be fine with a wild card berth and take it from there. I hope Favre gets traded, I really don't care where...I'm willing to give Rodgers a chance.

Like I said before, eventually the Packers will have to move on. I don't know when they'll be able to. I think that the Packers need to look to their past for their new starting quarterback. What's Bart Starr doing now?

In all seriousness, trade him already.

Okay, this shit is really getting ridiculous now. I wish nothing but ill will on all parties involved--Goodell, Favre, and Thompson--for wasting America's time with all of this stupid bullshit. Like Kinetic said, this is probably going to culminate in Rodgers getting the job, failing miserably, and Ted Thompson getting so much heat for this move that he'll have to be fired.

I liked that clip of him disembarking the private jet in Green Bay with all his fans waiting on the tarmac, like he's the Redneck Pope or something.

I'm not totally convinced that Brett Favre wouldn't be wearing a #4 sticker on his helmet in 2008, though.

While riding his lawn mower in Mississippi?

I'm pretty sure if it's for real. He's not Football Clemens. He's had plenty of time to think about this and doing it.

Always bet on "Favre not retiring," Leo. I guess I was right, but what compelled me to build the lexical house of cards that is "wouldn't be wearing a #4 sticker on his helmet" that day? Oh well.

Yeah, but what does Ja Rule have to say about it?

The best part was the guy on NFL Network looking like he'd rather be anywhere but Green Bay anymore. He's been covering it for weeks and now he's talking about Aaron Rodgers passes during practice. Brett getting in his car and leaving 15 minutes before practices has got to turn everyone on the team against him now. I'm sure most of them would love to leave but they are all stuck there.

Just release this fucker and let him go to the Vikings already. I don't care that Favre is killing Green Bay's season anymore because I'm so tired of hearing minute by minute updates of what he's doing. I didn't think anyone could ever hope to surpass Clemens's douchiness but Brett has now lapped the field on that one.
