2008 Final Four

Recommended Posts

Wow, KU must really hate Roy Williams for leaving because I didn't see coming at all tonight. I'm actually hoping Kansas can go ahead and win this thing, since they are certainly due at this point. I thought going in to the FF that KU was the least of the various evils:

--UNC. Got their usual bullshit home court bracket, got some calls, beat my team. So screw em.

--UCLA. Been bogus all year and got some screwy wins, should have been out 2nd round.

--Memphis. Do I even need to explain?

So really Kansas is the least offensive option of the 4. And unlike their various choker teams I don't see a glaring weakness on this team.

Wait.......UNC's usual home court bracket? I thought Duke always got the home court bracket. Or is it whichever one is the higher seed gets it?

Oh and KU does have a weakness, they've fouled the shit out of every opponent.

#1 seeds always get "home court" brackets, if the tournament sites are available to do so. If say, Duke and UNC are #1's and #2's (in any order), they will likely play in the same spot, if there's a tournament site in the Carolinas. That's just the way it is. If there was a tournament site in Phoenix and, say, Arizona State and Arizona were #1's and #2's, it would be the same for them. I say "home court" because if you've hosted more than three games in one arena during the season, you are not allowed to play there during the tournament.

Next year, the first and second round sites are in these places...

March 19 / 21

Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Host: Saint Joseph's University)

Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, North Carolina (Host: Atlantic Coast Conference)

Sprint Center, Kansas City, Missouri (Host: Big 12 Conference)

Rose Garden Arena, Portland, Oregon (Host: University of Oregon)

March 20 / 22

University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, Ohio (Host: University of Dayton)

AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami, Florida (Host: Florida International University)

Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minnesota (Host: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities)

Taco Bell Arena, Boise, Idaho (Host: Boise State University)

I can already see who's going to get what, provided teams continue to succeed.

And the regional sites are...

March 26 / 28

East Regional, TD Banknorth Garden, Boston, Massachusetts (Host: Boston College)

West Regional, University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona (Host: Arizona State University)*

March 27 / 29

South Regional, FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee (Host: University of Memphis)

Midwest Regional, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana (Hosts: Horizon League & Butler University)

Needless to say, Memphis won't be in the South Regional next year. That's the only thing for certain out of all those, I think.

So since I was caught up in the moment with a bunch of KU fans and not able to really study the game.......what the hell happened?

KU started off really really hot and UNC didn't look like they had ever touched a basketball before. Then suddenly UNC stormed back and KU was cold from the field then KU just blew them away at the end. It was a very odd up and down game.

Can Cabbageboy stop posting in sports threads? He never gives anyone credit and always is quick to call winners "undeserving" or "fluky". The act is tiresome.

As for the games, I was glad to see Memphis win over UCLA (who I don't like) and since Kansas/UNC was a game of two teams I didn't like, I was sort of rooting for UNC so Memphis could down them, but Memphis should have fun with Kansas. Now just think, Davidson was thisclose to beating Kansas, so that blowout/no it's not/blowout last night made me wonder how Davidson would do against UNC had they won.

I think Davidson was more of a mental block than anything for KU. It was a Southern Conference team(which they had lost to in the first round twice) and they hadn't made it past the Elite 8. I think that was the deal in that game.

Against UNC they just came out focused and had a lot of energy to start and then sputtered out because they expended so much emotion and energy. Then UNC made the comeback and probably expended all their energy and KU was able to just use their overall talent at the end to pull away. At least that's what I think happened.

I don't think either team will blow the other out, but honestly I don't know who will win. After watching the tournament it looks like a 50/50 deal. I'm not predicting a winner because either can win!

I mean Memphis shuts down everyone's guards but KU can go inside, but Memphis can hurt you with their guards but KU has great defensive guards. It's a toss-up for me.

Man, watching this news conference Calipari comes across as a little bit cocky. Oh well, I guess he has every right to be. I enjoy watching his team play and I enjoy watching Kansas play so this should be entertaining.

I like Joey Dorsey a lot for some reason too......dunno what it is.

A little bit cocky? Coach Cal is probably the cockiest coach out there.

Well I guess I'd say it's his right. He's backed it up thus far and if they get it done Monday then he can probably use the rest of us peons as a footstool if he felt like it.

I'm thinking ESPN is jinxing Memphis here.

Everyone they've completely written off in this tournament has won. I mean they wrote KU off against Davidson because they were sucked up in the Curry hype. Then they wrote KU off against UNC and they whipped UNC's ass.

Then they wrote Memphis off against, well everyone and we saw how that turned out.

Now after watching their shows today they seem to have completely written KU off as an after-thought to Memphis' big title win. Not good for Memphis, maybe Calipari needs to play a "you give us too much credit" card instead of the not enough one.

"The media thinks you're awesome. They've already awarded you the title. Nobody is picking Kansas. Well remember when those fickle sons a bitches were picking against us? They don't know what they're talking about! I haven't seen anything yet! Go out there and prove me wrong!"

Then again he seems to have the right approach with the whole not using what others say as motivation. He keeps saying the best way to do it is to measure against yourself and try to beat your last performance. Seems like a sound idea that's worked so far.

Man, ESPN is really trying to make up for doubting Memphis.

They've pretty much awarded tonight's game to Memphis. They keep saying "Kansas will have to contain Memphis' guards" but I never hear anything that says "Memphis will have to........."

I don't really care who wins. To me it's a pick' em anyway. But, ESPN is acting like it's a foregone conclusion that Memphis will win.

It's funny because that's the website and the hosts and anchors that act like that. The analysts are like "Well this game is totally up in the air." and you'd think whoever is producing these shows would listen to the people that know about basketball rather than just giving the title to Memphis.

I'd better see a lot of fast-break dunks tonight though.

Uh, what? Both of ESPN.com's college basketball guys took Kansas. And Kansas WILL have to contain Memphis' guards.

I know, I said the guys that actually know something about the game(IE. the analysts) are either calling it a toss-up or picking either team. Meanwhile the network and anchors and hosts are riding the Memphis bandwagon.

Since I can't win any pools anymore, this is the matchup I wanted most out of the four teams. It's good to see the two lesser-hyped teams silence the experts and make it to the big game. A lot of people would probably rank Kansas more in terms of UNC/UCLA in terms of hype and likeability (or lack thereof), but I've never gotten that vibe from them, really. I look at them more in terms of the great Atlanta Braves teams, without the "America's Team" moniker I hate so much.

Kansas: National Champion

Exciting game. It was a great end to what I thought was a boring/uneventful tournament.

Oh man, you guys can just imagine how much I was laughing my ass off at that game last night. As a Louisville alum I was bewildered as to why some U of L fans were actually cheering FOR Memphis in this game.

Someone should put together a highlight reel (or would that be lowlight?) of various Memphis debacles over the years. Start with Walton schooling them in 1973, maybe the end of the Memphis/Louisville 1986 game with Milt Wagner making 2 FTs, obviously the whole Darius Washington 2005 FT deal, and end it with the title game last night and all those clanks at the FT line.

Also at various points show Dana Kirk behind bars, how they vacated the 1985 FF, the various players over the years either shot dead or in prison, fans throwing knives and coins at opposing players, etc.

I actually felt kinda bad for the guys.

At least they didn't call that technical on CDR at the end of regulation. Dude would have been a bigger goat than Chris Webber.

You could see him in the replay looking around nervously after he slammed it, which I found pretty amusing.

Brandon Rush is entering the NBA draft.

Where did you hear that at? I haven't seen it reported anywhere. I was looking all over the AP wire for it yesterday and it wasn't on there.
