PILLS! PILLS! PILLS!

All-Time Wrestling Roster Draft

Recommended Posts

I had to debate the whole arena thing for a while yesterday. I have a lot of workers who would be over in the South based on when their peaks were, but I also have a lot of guys who first got noticed in the Northeast. I knew that MSG would be gone first, but I think with my venue selection I can count on the same exact fanbase which is just as good as far as I'm concerned. My venue is The Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale (Long Island), NY.

I don't know...they may draw from the same general area, but I've always thought Nassau was the polar opposite of MSG in terms of overall gate and crowd heat.

Looking at my roster, I feel that most of them can deliver a pretty good promo if need be. But there's a couple of guys that I feel shouldn't talk, or else it would destroy their mystique. Fortunately, I have a manager in store that has experience managing inarticulate wildmen. My pick is

Captain Lou Albano

And for the arena, I knew I wasn't going to get any of the obvious choices (MSG, Omni, etc.) but I wanted an arena that had a bit of history to it, a good size to hold a huge crowd, and was located in the South, as I'm a southern boy at heart. My pick, the arena that held the first four Starrcades, and the first ever Clash of the Champions, from Greensboro, NC, the Greensboro Coliseum

Alright, my first non-wrestler pick might not be the biggest guy still left on the board but he's certainly the best fit for my roster. He had a great deal of success as a manager in World Class Championship Wrestling and later on in Jim Crockett Promotions. He also served as the booker for WCCW during its golden years. He'll be serving as the dastardly manager for One Man Gang, Gino Hernandez, and The Skyscrapers. Like in the real life WCCW of the mid 80s, he'll be doing whatever it takes to bring down The Von Erich Brothers.

My 30th round selection is none other than the late, great...

02.jpg..."Playboy" Gary Hart

I was originally going to pick another venue in Chicago but at the last minute I decided against it wanting to carve my own territory. This arena has been a popular venue for wrestling for over sixty years and still hosts the rare show today. It played host to WCW SuperBrawl from 1997 to 2000 and WWE No Way Out 2004. Its also played host to to the AWA in the mid 80s and more recently ROH. Of course, it's most known to old school fans as the site of a legendary yearly battle royal from 1967 to 1981, that was won by the likes of Andre The Giant, Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson, and my roster's very own, Don Muraco. It's also to my knowledge the first venue picked that's on the West Coast of The United States.

Of course the arena I'm talking about is none other than...

Wow.. Hart went pretty quick.

Good pick though.

Good stuff for the Palace too.

Hart was a target for my next pick - I was going to put him with Kabuki, The Samoans, and Snuka. Actually, before I realized Percy was available, he was going to be my go-to manager.

I disagree mainly because IIRC the Lesnar/Rock match at Summer Slam '02 was the same kind of reaction one would have expected from an MSG crowd. I think there are only a handful of cities that can be known for having "smark" fans that go to shows and this was the one that made the most sense to me. Most of the people that I've known that have gone to Nassau to see the WWF/E did so when they couldn't get tickets to MSG if they were touring the tri-state area for shows. MSG tends to get the bigger dates such as a PPV or a TV taping while Nassau would get the TV taping after the PPV or just a house show, but having been to both places to see wrestling a few times I'd say that the crowds are pretty similar. I would have taken 909's pick but I have only three Canadians on my roster and the other place I was considering running can't hold upwards of 20,000 people.

For my non-wrestler selection I am going to choose someone who's work in the sort of position I envisage him in very much. My plan is not to use this man as a manager specifically, although that may happen. Rather this man will be my company's on screen president.

For my 30th pick, I choose:

Don 'Cyrus' Callis

As he representative of the network in ECW he was fantastic to watch. I plan to have him more or less reprise that role.

This leads me to pick my arena and base of operations. My thought process in deciding this was that my roster doesn't really have anyone on it that I would consider to be regional draws, other than Dusty. Instead I believe that my roster could realistically draw well almost anywhere. Rather than depending on certain names I believe my roster would pull people in based off of brand recognition, and with where I am planning on running by being the pinnacle of pro-wrestling in that country. Without further ado, I present the stadium from which my super card will occur:

wembley.jpg

The home of Summerslam 1992

Wembley Stadium in London, England.

Franchise, it was actually you that sparked the idea of Wembley in my mind. I remember earlier in the thread you talked about a stadium that was excellent that had only been used once, after I sat and thought about for a while I realised you could only be talking about the afore mentioned Wembley.

With my next pick in the Wrestling Draft I select...

01.jpg

Slick.

He is the Doctor Of Style. Plus you can put him with just about any heel and maybe any face.

My venue is...

800px-Caesars_Palace_-_Across_Bellagio_Lake.jpg

Caesar's Palace.

Home of WrestleMania IX. It is a pretty cool venue, and I love the outdoor atmosphere.

That was a make-shift arena wasn't it? It counts, I just wanted to know if that was an actual venue or was it built for WM9 alone. That's not the casino I thought would go first.

Also, any interest in having another round of venue drafts later on (perhaps the final round), just to add to our respective "territories". I think all the places taken so far could easily add a secondary "home", if we're supposed to be building an actual promotion that would require more then just one venue. I know the main idea is just to build the Super-Card but I know many here are thinking beyond just that one particular event.

The outdoor arena has been used for boxing events as well.

And yeah... I wouldn't be opposed to selecting another venue within the region (Give or take a certain distance) you have selected your primary venue. A lot of very important arenas/venues are going to get left out.

I'd definitely like to have another round of venue drafts. I think, for me at least, the goal of this draft has evolved beyond building one super card.

I say this with all due respect to mellow, but the size of this draft isn't really conducive to one single supercard. I don't know about the rest of you but I know I'm going to have a hard time, squeezing everybody on the card without having an absurd amount of matches or sticking all of my leftovers in a battle royal (although a battle royal might be fitting given my primary venue).

If you guys let me have the Headbangers get a little updating, then Drury should definitely be able to keep his show at Caesar's. There are more than enough venues to go around.

As for the supercard, it's definitely plausible to figure out how to get your roster on the show. WMX7 had 11 matches (33 wrestlers were in matches and another 27 making appearances during matches as managers, run ins or in the gimmick battle royal).

I'd say from here on out let people use a pick for whatever. A Team, a manager, a venue if they want. I don't need another venue myself, but if someone is really demanding another spot I don't care.

No one said Drury couldn't use that venue. The rules stated if a venue has ever held a pro wrestling event, it's allowed. I just merely asked if that was a make-shift venue for WM9 or a real venue that Caesar's had (which was answered).

I don't think it's really a issue about people feeling the super card can't include anyone, more about people having multiple ideas for their entire roster. This whole project is just a giant fantasy booking game and some have more detailed and involved plans, which would incude multiple shows/venues. If you are just approaching this for a super-card, then one venue is enough.

When the overall draft is over, I think it'd be interesting for everyone to go around, look at the other rosters, and list, if you had the chance, who you would take off all of the other rosters. Basically, you look for that one person on each roster that would fit in best with the talent you already have (As a result, it wouldn't be everyone listing all the main event or top level guys).

Would the choice of further venues be at the expense of a roster pick, if we were to allow that from here on in?

You know- lost in all of this is the fact that OOG's time expired about twelve hours ago and Drury's pick expired about four hours ago. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Garth is up.

Did Fratsauce get abducted by aliens or something?

Makeup selections

OOG - 2 picks (and declare his location)

Drury - 1 pick

Fratsauce - 6 picks (and declare his location)
