Mik 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 Upon rewatching the fights I paid more attention to what the corners said to each fighter during the round breaks. When I watch the PPV that's when I usually post on here or get a drink or whatever. Brock's corner was repeatedly telling him to use hammerfists, which means he's being coached into this boring awful strategy. Hammerfists, IMO, are about the worst thing Brock can do on a regular basis. Bas Rutten said it best when he said short elbows and Brock is unbeatable. Hell, even a few loaded punches. There's nothing wrong with hammerfists but as your primary gnp weapon? I don't know. As for the fight being boring - yes, it sort of was. But that doesn't mean Brock didn't do anything. Heath Herring is probably unrecognizable today. The punches don't look like much but consider the size of the hand and the strength of the man throwing them and they add up quick. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Everytime Fitch tried to shoot in on GSP for the takedown and then I had to watch GSP hop around backwards on one foot to one side of the ring to the other, it just made me think that if that was BJ Penn in there it would have been a rather easy takedown. I can't wait to see GSP vs. Penn........
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I'm confused. Do you mean that Penn would've taken GSP down? That GSP would've taken Penn down?
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I'm confused. Do you mean that Penn would've taken GSP down? That GSP would've taken Penn down? That Penn would have taken GSP down, in that specific situation. No way is BJ going to have him shot & wrapped up and then proceed to allow GSP to hop around on one leg all the way across the Octagon. Fitch was a tough mutha, but he was very out-classed. BJ Penn in the same situation wouldn't be. This isn't to say BJ Penn would win or not, but in GSP's fight with Fitch, there were plenty of eye opening moments where it is conceivable that a better fighter would have better taken advantage of the situation. Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 BJ's a good wrestler himself, but he's nowhere near the caliber of wrestler that Josh Koscheck is, and even he managed to finish just one of two takedown attempts on GSP. What BJ does that previous wrestlers who've fought GSP don't is mix his striking and takedown attempts very well. Whether that would pay off against GSP (or if BJ would even attempt it) remains to be seen.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 It's probably to BJ's advantage that he doesn't have that wrestling pedigree, because he wouldn't think like a wrestler in that situation, and would probably try something outside of what's expected. So in that respect I can sorta see what Mike is trying to say.
Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 BJ Penn should keep the fight standing... I think he has a clear advantage in the striking department against GSP. Fitch stuffed a few of GSP's takedowns in their fight which makes me think BJ can stuff some of GSP's takedowns, because Fitch has pretty shitty takedown defense, and BJ is known for his takedown defense. BJ needs to turn the fight into a brawl like he did in the 1st round of their 1st fight.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 A couple of notes from last night's Observer radio shows on F4W regarding Brock's taunting, next opponent and Mark Coleman: Coleman doesn't want the fight against Lesnar. The idea is for Brock to next face Cheick Kongo, but he might not want to fighter Lesnar either. Brock and Cain Velasquez are the two that people are not wanting to face right now, Cain more than Lesnar. The reason being that beating Lesnar gets notoriety and a good chance of a title shot, but beating Cain, if they can even do it, doesn't have a lot of upside to it. Lesnar's taunting of Herring was down to comments Herring and his camp had made privately about Lesnar. They considered Lesnar a joke (a 'fake pro wrestler' is how Dave described it) and felt disrespected about putting a real fighter against someone like Lesnar. This sort of talk was going on all week long, and when Lesnar heard about it, it obviously didn't sit well.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 GSP has really developed his jab in his past 2 fights, which is a big improvement from when he fought Penn last. He is able to keep out of range a bit better and since BJ is more of a flat footed striker, I think GSP would fair a lot better standing this time.
Scroby 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I competely forgot about the Lesnar fight on Saturday. I watched the first two rounds but I haven't seen the 3rd round yet, does anyone know where I can watch it?

The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Brock's corner was repeatedly telling him to use hammerfists. Terra Serra was in the corner? OH SHIT
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I heard nothing about Brock breathing all day or utilizing foot stomps.
Mik 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Terra Serra did make an appearance cornering Luke Cummo but you couldn't really hear him at all. Or maybe I was just too busy yelling "Go Tamdan! Go Tamdan!" for 15 straight minutes. It's hard to remember these details.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I can see Luke not being around very soon. 'Specially now that Barn Cat is around it seems they've upgraded their resident dork.
Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Dave basically hit the nail on the head with Brock & Cain. Who the fuck wants to face those two? Brock I could see...You beat him and instant push. But Cain? There's no upside to that fight right now. Brock slowly beat Herring half to death, and Cain just raped JOB violently. There's many UFC heavyweights with way less skill then Herring, and JOB was a really high level wrestler. Neither JOB or Herring stood a chance against those two monsters. If Kongo takes the fight with Brock, then all the credit in the world to him. Given his style and his weaknesses, he's a ballsy fucker for taking that fight. It's not one he's likely to win at all. I would have said he'd have a chance to knee or something when Brock shoots in...but Brock's speed was immense. I don't see anyone having the reflexes for that. Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 You either get it, or you don't. What Lesnar did is nothing different then Tito Ortiz did for most of his successful career. It's a way to draw attention and get interest. Lesnar lassoing him was AWESOME. Lesnar's post match including claiming he "got back on that horse and rode it out of town" were brilliant. Even better when you consider that Herring's nickname is the "Texas Crazy Horse". Awesome, awesome stuff. The fans ate it up with a spoon too. Lesnar continued at the post show conference, where he apparently apologized for his actions, then said he actually doesn't apologize because he doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks of him which only made people angrier. That man gets how to sell himself.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Hey, he learned from one of the best in Heyman. Anyways, watching this finally, and yeah, it's Sherk's guys in Brock's corner, so no wonder he didn't finish Herring.
Scroby 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I watched the 3rd round and the video cut off when Lesnar's hand was raised so maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what people are upset about. Are people upset that Lesnar paraded around a bit with his arm rasied before it was offical or was there more to the video I didn't see?

I don't think it's as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. Herring and his camp were talking a lot of shit before the fight. If Lesnar wasn't a former pro wrestler, it wouldn't be made such a big deal.
