WWE SummerSlam 2008

Recommended Posts

Hey Matt, Check out page 2 of this thread.

I watched the show tonight and I enjoyed it. I was kinda bummed about the Mark Henry vs Matt Hardy match as I was kinda looking forward to watching it but at least the feud continues, I just kinda wished the entire thing wasn't so damn short. Though was it me or did it seem like the crowd got very quiet for a few seconds during matches. There was one time when Taker and Edge were outside of the cell where everything just seemed to get silent for a few seconds.

Sweet more Smilin Mark Henry! And probably to make fans wonder if Beth would get the IC title if they had won the match.

Okay, I admit it. I was wrong. SummerSlam was good.

My biggest surprise was while HIAC was MOTN, neither man bladed. I thought that was a nice change. Also, I'm hoping Cena's losing streak will leasd to that long overdue heel turn.

I figure for Unforgiven, its going to be Punk / Batista again. Mysterio / Kane, Michaels / Jericho in a Street Fight or Last Man Standing, and Hardys / MVP-Benjamin.

all i know is i will be going to unforgiven with expectations of seeing punk as champion, and a great climax to the jericho hbk feud.

I think an I Quit match would be the most suitable gimmick match for Jericho/HBK at Unforgiven. A month ago it would've been a blindfold match, but the feud is obviously beyond that now.

I thought this show was good from what I saw.

In terms of stuff that stood out (in no kinda order), MVP seemed impressive in the match with Hardy (that Drive By kick is a hot ass finisher). Believe it or not, I think this was the first time I really got to see Khali in action, and I was actually feeling the match with HHH up until the finish. Might just be me, but those chops and everything seemed really believeable and they worked well in playing towards his strengths and telling a good story.

The HBK/Jericho angle was great as usual, and I'm glad they went the route with HBK actually deciding to retire instead of doing the predictable "defying doctor's advice" stuff they always tend to run.

Matt Hardy and Mark Henry was absolute bullshit. They could've cut down on some of the entrances and what not and at least given us a couple of minutes of action.

The mixed tag was great. Loved the spot where Kofi faked the dive and Santino leapt into Beth's arms.

Punk and Bradshaw was what it was. I was actually asleep for a good part of Cena/Batista so I can't comment on quality, but jobbing Cena again is an odd move. Hopefully it's going somewhere, because I hate to see him job for no reason.

Main Event was a little disappointing given all the stuff I've been reading about with Edge, but I thought the ending was pretty well worked. I liked Taker running through all the stuff that Edge had done to him and paying him back. The chokeslam to hell spot was contrived (I hate stuff like that) but I think the idea (with the fire and what not) was kinda cool given Taker's character; I generally don't mind that kinda stuff with him. BTW, I must've seen that video package with Vicki announcing Hell in a Cell at least 3 times now, but I think that's one of the best videos they've ever done. The sound of her just laughing in the background just makes that video.

Nothing blow away on the show but only one flat out bad thing going on. Can't complain.

Actually, the show ended with ample time left. They could have given these guys six or seven minutes easy.

Cena jobbing so much right now is in response to him playing Superman for almost three years. Before, people were complaining about him beating everyone. Now they are complaining about him losing so much.

We were talking about this in the chat room last night...people were contending that he has been looking weak. Hawk said it best when he said he doesn't look weak, he looks vulnerable. I don't think the loses he's suffered this year are going to affect him at all. He'll eventually redeem himself.

Wow, I'm sorry that I have to be so negative in some threads. Didn't think it would be that much of a big deal. I mean, do I have to like every single thing in the world? I too think that since Cena has jobbed in every important match this year, that he finally needs a heel turn. I heard months ago that they planned on turning Batista heel, but I don't think that will make any sense now.

Maybe the WWE has finally realized it's time to make a change with Cena. Who knows. They're never scared to pull the trigger on an Austin, HHH or Rock turn, so why not Cena?

I don't get why Batista would turn heel. Cena is in much more need of a heel turn at this point and I am tired of the whole merchandise argument. If the guy has a cool shirt, people will buy it anyway. The NWO had one of the biggest selling shirts ever and they were total heels.

Because if I'm right about where I think they're going with this, you will see Batista challenge Punk for the title and win it, possibly as a heel or at the very least, tweener. Then you have Batista as champion bringing the belt into Mania, where you have Cena challenging him in a big time rematch. You don't want a face champion/heel challenger dynamic for Cena/Batista at Mania, and it makes no sense for Cena to challenge Punk before Batista.

edit: Cabbageboy, while the NWO were "heels" they played to the crowds like faces would. I wouldn't really use them as an example.

It's not so much the losing that concerns me, it's more that he's dropping big matches to guys who really don't stand to gain from them in the long run. It made sense to have Orton go over him, since it helped solidify him at that level, but I see no real benefit in the last three jobs he did. The HHH one was pretty much meaningless and at most served to pop a quick buyrate. Same with Batista for the most part, and it was rushed at that. The Bradshaw job at least served a purpose in building Bradshaw for Punk, but again that's only short term and now that's out the window. Cena's probably the one guy on the roster over enough to get away with being jobbed like that, and he's still the focus of the show so it's not like it really matters all that much, but--especially when you consider the superman build he's had in the past--I just hate to see him drop meaningless matches and really hope it goes somewhere.

Christian's Captain Charisma shirt was selling pretty well before he went to TNA IIRC.

After Cena's run from 2006-2007 where he ran through every valiuable contender, him dropping 3 PPV's isn't too bad. It doesn't make him look invincible anymore which is for the better.

Plus I thought both wrestlers looked strong, Cena will go over in the rematch.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think they should have swapped the order of the final two moves of Cena/Batista?

Seems to me it would've been wiser to go down to the HurancanDaveBomb and be able to say "You needed to capitalize on my mistake and give me an ultra-powerbomb to beat me" than it does to have him kick out of it only to fall shortly thereafter to a 'regular' Batista Bomb.

That would have been a better ending to the match.

I think the Rock in 1998 is another example of a heel who sold tons of merchandise. I don't really think they can do the predictable Cena winning the title soon, or him being in the Wrestlemania main event. I mean, you can't have a guy thats supposed to be the main focus on a show constantly main event when he's losing a lot. And these are clean losses too.

I didnt't see the PPV but from what I hear it seemed to end early. Does anyone have an idea why this is? Was a wrestler hurt?

It ended around the usual time, which is 10:45. They rarely reach into the final 10 minutes of the PPV air time.

This was a chore to read through. Thank you for being worthwhile, RedJed. You may smoke things I don't approve of, but if it helps you be positive and think clearly instead of infesting threads with dreck and hate, so be it. Dude even tries to make sense out of TNA!

Anyway, this was a good show. I wasn't looking forward to it and had no intentions of ordering it, but this morning I realized with a router and what not I have the power to watch downloaded videos on my TV via the Xbox, so hooray for that. Whoever made the comment about it looking like Cena was about to hit a flying rana, I thought the same thing - that was great. I think Meltzer went a bit overboard with his feelings on the HIAC match but it WAS good. HHH/Khali was a miracle and JBL/Punk was much better than I thought it would be.
