Conference play in college hoops really heats up. My honest-to-goodness automatic reaction to that was to go "ooooooh!" and make the nWo spooky fingers. Sigh. But the book 2010 and I think 3001 as well came before the movies...IIRC. 2010 was written before its movie came out, 2061 was published in 1986, and 3001 was published in 1997. 2001 was actually written at the same time as its own script, which is what lead to the book/movie difference of the planet near which the monolith was being Saturn in the book.

I think if we were worried about what other countries thought more than what we wanted to do, we wouldn't be in Iraq in the first place. That always bugged me anyway, phrasing it like that.
