Guest Dangerous A Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Has anyone here seen "City of God"? I'd say it was THE best or one of the best movies I've seen in years. It's in portugese with english subtitles and takes place in a ghetto in Rio De Janero. The best description of this movie is it's hard to watch, yet mesmerizing. Really a breath taking film that is shot with so much realism that you'd swear you were watching a documentary. Do yourselves a favor and get out to an arthouse theatre or wait a bit for the DVD, but I guarantee you will not forget this movie once you've seen it. It's that good. Ebert pimped it a his second best movie last year behind "Minority Report". I loved "Minority Report" and I am telling you "City of God" is better.

Brush with Greatness 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 FINALLY, got around to seeing this movie last night and it was just as awesome as I expected. Will definetly be purchasing it in the future. The best comparison would potentially be a Brazilian Goodfellas. This movie was just great. The little sub-stories and just the grittiness of it all put it over the top. One of the best movies I have ever seen.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 Its about the homeless youth in Brazil right?
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Its about the homeless youth in Brazil right? They aren't homeless, but live in a housing project that has the name "City of God". The title is ironic because this particular slum has got to be one of the most God-less places on the planet. It follows youths that lived there from the start of the housing project up through 2 decades. Through the years, you see the "City of God" decay from the struggle between warring drug dealers and the corrupt police. I am glad this got resurrected since I was about to start a new thread when this came out on DVD this past Tuesday. Brash with Greatness knows the awesomeness that is this movie. I can't pimp it enough. Do yourselves a favor and at least rent this gem. I believe after you've viewed it, you will want this movie in your DVD collection. Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Another thing this movie will do will make you appreciate where you live a hell of a lot more. The film is based on true events and there is a documentary feature on the DVD that shows that what is going on in the movie is how it goes down for real. The ending credits also show this. That place is truly hell on earth. I swear it makes even the toughest hoods in the U.S. look like fucking Disneyland. It's that fucked up.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 One of the best movies I've seen in the last few years, hands down, which is saying a lot considering my LOTR love. I loved how everything connected, came full circle almost. The children in it were just brilliant. I can't get over how affecting yet simple the performance by Rocket was. Great directing too, as it does indeed show you how this place is hell. ****3/
ArkhamGlobe 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 City of God is one of the best edited films I've seen in years. Through the cuts there is a sense of continueus motion that is absolutely exhilirating and it fits the narrative perfectly. And that's just one reason I loved the film. I was blown away completely when I saw it this past fall, I should look into getting the dvd.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2004 I am loving this shit. Bring it on. Bring on your testimonials of one of the best films to come out in years. I will continue to pimp and bump this bad boy. I almost feel an obligation to share this extraordinary film with as many people as I can. NoCalMike is borrowing my copy of the DVD this week and I'm pretty sure he'll share his thoughts on the film here as well.
Guest Jimmy Saint Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Fantastic film. One of the best of recent years. I've seen it three times at the cinema as I have a local art house cinema in my city that likes to show it.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Well this movie certainly blew me away. Dangerous_A has been pimping this piece, since he saw it in a theater last year. I should have taken my ass down to the theater to see it, as I have wasted hard earned cash on some real pieces of shit in my lifetime. Do yourself a favor and go rent......no, JUST BUY it. It is that good. I think I will be picking this one up on Friday along with the Curb/Simpsons 4 set. I agree with the person that said the edit job in this film is fantastic. There is no slowdown in this movie, and it feels like on constant flow all the way through. Also, the backstories are just amazing. What more can I say, Go watch it NOW dammit. Toshiaki Koala 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 I watched it last night, really amazing movie. I found it funny how the posters made it look like a love story, yet much of the movie consists of people firing guns at each other. When I watch a movie on TV, or even in the theater, I often find my mind wandering and I end up having to rewind because I missed some details - not once did that happen during City of God (quite an achievement considering that it's fairly long and uses subtitles). It's just impossible to look away or think of anything else, the movie grabs you so tight. Definitely one of the best films of recent years.
Toshiaki Koala 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2004 Villain of the Year = Lil' Zé, City of God. His laugh just creeps me out, especially when he does it right after killing someone.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2004 Agreed about Lil Ze. Even when he was a little boy, the person they had playing him was creepy, especially the bit after the hotel robbery. Scary part is that he was real and a person that evil could really exist.
Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Great fucking movie. I want to buy it but I'm kinda pissed that the other regions got the loaded discs and region 1 got a piddly documentary.

Guest cellardoor Report post Posted July 27, 2004 City of God is a cinematic masterpiece. My heart actually skipped a beat when I saw someone's post saying, "It SUCKED!" Then I read the, "Just kidding!" and felt a wave of relief. I watched it a total of three times within the first two days of having purchased it. I have a friend who's 1/2 Brazilian, and she thought it was very well done. I don't think I have a single complaint about the film. I'd highly recommend it to just about anyone. notJames 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 In one fell swoop, this film broke into my Top 3 Favourites of all time. From beginning to end, I was mesmerized. At the risk of playing spoiler, the scene where Lil Zé first confronts the Runts (I think that's what they were called) is one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen. I've recommended this film to everyone, and hopefully when DeepDiscountDVD runs another fire sale, I'll snatch it up lickety-split.
Guest Kid Kablam Report post Posted August 3, 2004 Finally got around to watching it after months of anticipation. Amazing movie, and just an all around amazing achievement. What amazed me was how in the end, after seeing the progression of things, the violence, in a sick and terrible way, made sense. What I mean is that none of it felt contrived or thrown in for thrills, but instead all of it just felt like a natural culmination of a bad situation. This film does compare pretty well to Goodfellas because it takes its time in developing the system and explaining all the backstories. When the system erupts, it just seems natural. Amazing movie, and it makes my top ten list.
Shanghai Kid 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2004 Just saw the movie, and DAMN it was good. Lil Ze was the ultimate villian and he truly got what he deserved at the end. Man I liked Benny, he was cool. What happened to that girl Angelica? She just dissapeared. What's the sequel going to be about?
