No Mercy thoughts

I did catch No Mercy tonight, although I probably won't end up doing a rant until later in the week, as I kind of feel like taking a vacation from reviewing wrestling along with my vacation from work.

It was an okay show, but there was some stuff that REALLY bugged me -- for instance, the ludicrous nature of building the main event around a chain when we had already seen a chain used as a weapon earlier in the evening, along with a chair, the gold medals, a lead pipe, a belt, a club, the STEEL stairs and a pair of brass knuckles. Not to mention needing 4 guys and a foreign object to beat Undertaker is getting stupid.

QnD results:

- Tajiri pinned Rey Mysterio to retain the CW title, with another retarded "fans running in" angle that's just gonna encourage drunken morons. Match was okay, if a little low-key (not to be confused with Low-Ki), and was ***ish. The lack of involvement from Jamie Noble was odd, after the hard sell was put on the Nidia angle.

- Chris Benoit beat A-Train by submission to the Sharpshooter in a booking move I've been saying they should make for months now. The move is already over huge and will get a guaranteed pop anywhere, and I'm glad someone finally tapped to it. The usual Benoit-Train match, aside from Benoit nearly dying as a result of a botched press slam. **

- Zach Gowen pinned Matt Hardy with a moonsault out of nowhere in a finish that I don't get the point of at all. It helps no one and the only people who don't seem to get that Zach's 15 minutes were up 3 minutes ago are the WWE. About *1/2

- The Bashams beat the APA in a god-awful tag match that dragged on forever until Shaniqua and her new boobs did a run-in finish. 1/2*

- Vince McMahon beat Stephanie when Linda threw in the towel, as they added about 18 different stipuations to the I Quit match and then booked a finish that meant no one said I Quit. Because god knows it's fine for A-Train and John Cena to quit, but Stephanie has to look strong. The match was horrible, but the crowd was into it. It really makes me wonder why Vince can't TEACH the other guys in the promotion how to be an effective heel like that, instead of having to do it himself. DUD

- Kurt Angle d. John Cena by submission in a great match with another finish that helps no one. There was absolutely no reason for Cena not to go over here, and the longer they go without elevating anyone, the more impossible it's gonna be to do it because everyone gets painted as a loser. ****

- Big Show pinned Eddie Guerrero to win the US title clean with a chokeslam in a boring match. Oh, but Eddie gets "elevated" by feuding with Chavo now. The window is officially closed. *

- Brock Lesnar d. Undertaker to retain the Smackdown title in a dull, long main event with an anticlimactic finish and 4 guys running in to beat Undertaker. 20 minute main events are NOT a smart idea for this guy at this point in his career. And we get another one next month, against Vince. **

Overall, I'd have to call it thumbs in the middle, with Angle-Cena barely saving it from a thumbs down..

They explained that Noble was by Nidia's side

If you hate him so much- why do you read his stuff Jason?

Funniest thing in the blog so far:

"I was just disappointed that only the steel steps got involved and not the dreaded unforgiving steel steps."

EDIT: "god knows it's fine for A-Train and John Cena to quit, but Stephanie has to look strong"

You gotta admit that SK has a point there.

The only part I agree with is the bit about UT always needed a several guys and a foreign object to be taken down. The fucker can't ever job clean, can he? I'm getting tired of this newfound Taker love, so he's put on his workboots a few times lately, so what? He still refuses to put anyone over.

Naibus is my new hero. Finally, someone with a head on their shoulders. I feel for you though. Lord knows around this place nowadays, if someone DARES to shit talk the almighty Undertaker, they'll be blackballed for life.

I agree with him, except he overrated everything, as usual. But hey, at least he's consistent with ratings so you know what means what.

The real bright freaking spot on all of this is Cena. If they want a hot Wrestlemania, they should turn do the angle-cena double turn, and then have Cena get the title shot at a heel angle at Wrestlemania.

I don't think that the "Stephanie never quit, it was Linda throwing in the towel" is supposed to keep Stephanie looking strong, but instead is going to be used as part of the angle when she returns in a month or two. It actually shows continuity in a way that's rarely seen anymore (using what happened to explain something later on).

Sometimes, I think that people are so bent on being negative that they don't step back and look at the big picture.

I agree that that's what it was used for, but we saw John Cena of all people, who is way more popular than Steph, tap out earlier in the show. It's just ridiculous. It's bullshit to promise an "I Quit" match and then end it like that. And do we really want Steph back in 2 months? God, can't we introduce a new face to the GM position?

Which automatically makes it a Bad Thing.

Yes, I am biased.

Man I've been saying this same shit ever since the Taker love started earlier this summer.

I don't understand why he continues to watch every show, month after month, if he "hasn't been entertained by the WWE" since Owen Hart's death? ..Then why is he still watching and writing reviews every single week?

He does it for the love of the fans!...and possibly because while watching it with so many friends it probably only costs him $5 and he gets to sit back and hang out with said friends

Somebody needs to book a casket match between Taker and random fatty so we can see him take another long vacation

Cena REALLY should have gone over.

And he severely underrated the ME, whi had everyone in the thread last night praising it.

Funny, I thought he overrated it. It was a match where everyone and their mom knew the finish wasn't coming until the chain was used, yet Taker still tried an embarrasing version of La Majistral early in the match, establishing that winning is more important than using the chain...until later in the match, when he hit his finisher, and then decided that getting the chain is more important. Huh? There was insane overbooking, and the pace was extremely slow. A few cool MMA moves and a top rope chokeslam does not make a **** match.

Everyone knew the finish... but Taker and Brock still managed to put together an awesome match. Everyone knew the finish to Benoit/Angle... how is that even relevent.

Taker's La Magistral was fine, IMO. As was his Plancha, Triangle Choke, and Dragon Sleeper. UT was on fire last night and the crowd was eating it up.

Oh and the winning is more important then the chain thing... HUH? He went for the La Magistral, not because of the chain but because he wanted a surprise pin attempt and perhaps catch Brock napping. He didn't bring the chain down early because he didn't want to take the chance Brock was able to take it and shift the momentum of the match. Once he hit the finisher, he thought he was safe.

Your "reasons" suck. Admit it, Taker hater, Brock and UT blew the doors off that place.

I thought the match sucked as well. It was just so slow. Angle v. Taker from SD! was much better.

The interference was cheap and the fact that the chain was used only once pissed me off.

Everyone knew the match wouldn't end before they used the chain so none of the near falls did anything for me.

The fact that the chain shot totally missed also hampered my enjoyment of the match.

I know it's Maryland and all but the fact that there was no blood was another factor in me not liking the match. What's the point of booking a chain match if you're not going to have a blood bath?

I thought this was the worst of their three PPV encounters

The thing was.....that chain was to high for Brock to reach......and I wasn't sure about Taker so I thought they'd screwed up and they were going to have to finish the match without grabbing the chain.....oh boy would that have been hilarious.

Probably for the same reasons most of you continue to watch it every week, despite "hating" it. I haven't really been entertained by the product since the first half of 2001, but when I do watch (which is becoming more of a rarity these days), I watch because like others, I have this faint hope in the back of my mind that maybe, just maybe, things will start to turn around and get better.
