Episodes 7, 8, and 9 In The Works?

As many of you have reported, Dark Horizons posted the following:

"One of my pals at ILM told me a few days back that another trilogy 'might' happen. This is the sequel trilogy that Lucas said he'd never do. It's very very early days yet, but apparently there is some talk, even to the point of Mr Spielberg - who was interested in doing 'Clones' at one point - stepping in for Lucas, who may want to write, but probably won't want to direct. If Lucas doesn't they'll probably work out a deal for say Frank Darabont to pen (ala the current "Indiana Jones IV" arrangement). This one would be the three films following Return of the Jedi, Han Solo, Skywalker, post-Darth etc. How hard of a time are they going to have on their hands getting some of those original players! ha ha! finally a fitting use for CGI hey? The deal is everyone wants the sequels, except Lucas, who is apparently exhausted [Personally I'd say studio pressure]. If Spielberg directs, it could be ok. Better than those terrible prequel movies".

Our thoughts? Well, there have been rumors about a sequel trilogy for as long as there's been Star Wars. However, we have yet to hear any rumblings on this. Lucas has also publicly stated that he's done with Star Wars after Episode III. He wants to move on to other projects. Plus, there's no way they're going to be able to get Harrison Ford to play Han Solo again without generous sums of cash and giving him free reign over his character.

However....

If Dark Horizons says their source is reliable, we're inclined to believe them. Plus it seems crazy to let a multi-million dollar franchise fizzle and die after Episode III. The story still has life in it and can still generate money. Plus there are probably a long line of excellent writers and directors who would love to play in a galaxy far, far away that Lucas wouldn't have to get that involved with. After all, he's allowing the Clone Wars cartoons to play in the universe without him and he seems to be pleased with the results. The same goes with the Star Wars fan films.

Anyway, don't put too much stock in this rumor yet, but don't flush it away either. After all, Lucas has been known to change his mind...from time to time. (Did Greedo shoot first?!?)

Unless they get the original actors (it would make sense because they're old now as their character should be) and Episode 7 is about the Truce of Bakura, I'm not interested.

Unless episode three kicks some serious ass, I don't see the point of a third trilogy.

By the time it would get made, the generation of movie goers is going to be more familiar with the second trilogy as opposed to the first. And those people certainly aren't going to be flocking to the theaters in droves for more Star Wars.

The Thrawn Trilogy would fit in well, although if the timeline between RotJ & 7 were to be the same as 3 & ANH, then you're looking at the New Jedi Order.

But I'm inclined not to believe the rumour. Lucas has shown that as far as Star Wars goes, he will keep his hand in the pot. Let's see how Indy 4 works out first...

There's no way they could do it unless the new trilogy was way in the future because most of the original cast look really old now.

Will it be based on the books? Like the "Heir to the Empire" and those books? Those were some pretty sweet books and I could see making a movie from them. Especially since they explained the absence of Obi Wan's ghost in the beginning of one of those books.

Unless it's the Thrawn Trilogy, I'm not interested.

I really have doubts that anyone - even Spielberg - could create a trilogy that bests that one.

I'm all for Episodes 7-9 as long as Lucas has little to do with it.

I'd be shocked if 7-9 ever got made.

But, hey, if they are, I'm there.

Spoken like a true Star Wars fan (which means I would be there as well).

Christ, just let the series die for godsakes.

I mean, I could understand the prequels, because Lucas had them in mind since the beginning and the series started with Episode IV, but don't drag this out. Return of the Jedi did something that an ongoing saga rarely does: end well. And since they have done average at best with the prequels, why risk putting out another edition of a franchise that's already losing steam.

And can you imagine the cast coming back. I mean, I like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, but they have already outgrown the roles.

Actually he had up to Episode IX in mind from the start, he just decided he didn't want to keep on doing the same thing forever.

"And then this one studio exec wanted me to put this giant spider in the film and have it attack Han Solo and eat Chewy, and I'm like... ok... and he tells me that the spider is the most efficient killing machine in the insect kingdom..."

There would be too many holes for them to do the Thrawn Trilogy. It would really need to be at least 4-6 movies to that, so I doubt it's happen.

It's funny though, I just got through talking to a good friend of mine and TSWT came up. We both agreed that this would be a good stopping point. But I'd still go see them...DAMNIT!

Eh.....unlike everyone else I am really enjoying the Prequels so I'd probably enjoy more Star Wars movies. I have played the Star Wars d20 Roleplaying Game so I am familar with the New Jedi Order and I have read the Thrawn Trilogy. All would be good game.

darabont writing - lucas writing + spielberg directing - lucas directing= good.

however...

this mammoth project would take up a good 6-7 years of spielberg's life. not only do i doubt he'd be up for that kind of commitment (if you're THE top director in the world, would you want to spend 7 years of your life finishing up someone else's franchise?), but i'd frankly rather see him direct other stuff that shows more variety and promise.

and as said before by some others, i doubt the demand for 3 more movies will be there. interest is already fading, and the last episode of the prequel trilogy isn't even released yet.

i'd hardly call it a rut. lucas hasn't directed a really good movie in over 30 years. that's major deterioration, it's not like a slump you'd expect him to get out of.

I don't really see the series expanding more than the prequels so I find this piece of 'news' moot, but whatever.

While I would definitely like seeing Thrawn kicking major ass on screen, I doubt it would happen. For some reason, while Lucas probably likes the money they bring in, he doesn't seem to care too much for the book SW universe. I've seen it posted before on places like supershadow.com (it's a fan site, but done by someone who definitely seems to have an ear close to Lucas) that George doesn't like how his characters are portrayed a lot of the time.

So, basically, it would probably end up something completely new. However, since there is a rumor that an expanded universe character will make an appearance in Episode 3 (and, intertestingly enough, Thrawn's arrival from the Unknown Regions would seem to fit in to the timeline of the movie fairly well) Lucas/Spielberg etc may do it if the money and demand are right.

Because NONE of them are flocking to see episodes 1-3...
