A New York federal judge will allow The Source Magazine to distribute CDs containing 20 seconds of lyrics from early Eminem songs which contain racist lyrics. The magazine plans to enclose the CD in its next issue. Eminem has stated that the apparent racist recordings were made "out of anger, stupidity and frustration" after breaking up with a black girlfriend. In addition to the 20 seconds, the magazine will be allowed to reprint eight lines from the recording. The January issue of The Source hits newstands on January 12th. Last week, a judge issued a temporary injunction thwarting the hip-hop magazine from distributing previously unreleased recordings from the early 1990s of the white rapper freestyling lyrics that the mag deemed racist. However, Manhattan Federal Judge Gerald Lynch ruled Monday that the magazine could distribute excerpted versions of the tracks--releasing up to 20 seconds of the material from two recordings and printing up to eight lines of the lyrics. The controversy began last month after Source founders David Mays and Raymond "Benzino" Scott held a news conference intended to expose the real Slim Shady. The duo played a recording of "what is clearly identifiable as Eminem's voice, reciting racial slurs targeted against black women," according to their statement. The offending lyrics contain the following lines: Blacks and whites, they sometimes mix But black girls only want your money cause they're dumb chicks So I'ma say like this Don't date a black girl, take it as a diss If you want, but if you don't I'ma tell you like this, I surely won't. Eminem apologized for the inflammatory lyrics after the conference, and said the recording was made out of "anger, stupidity and frustration" after his break-up with an African-American girlfriend. However, he stated his belief that he considered the tape's release to be a direct consequence of his long-standing beef with rapper Benzino. "Ray Benzino, Dave Mays and The Source have had a vendetta against me, Shady Records and our artists for a long time," Eminem said in a statement. The Source claimed to have obtained the controversial tape from "three white hip-hop fans from Detroit who were peers of Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, in the early 90s, at the time of the recording." The magazine had planned to distribute the complete CD of the unreleased Eminem track with its February issue and devote extensive coverage to the release. It will now go forward with the release of the excerpted raps. Lawyers for the hip-hopster sought an injunction against the mag, citing copyright violations. Much to the ire of Source higher-ups, Judge Lynch initially granted Em's legal team their wish and barred the mag from doling out the disc. A statement from The Source conveyed the opinion of its founders that the injunction was just another indication of the racial bias taking over the hip-hop culture. Perhaps their complaints brought the judge around--in any case, Lynch ruled that the excerpted portions could be considered fair use of copyrighted material for the purpose of criticism. Eminem's record company, Interscope Records, did not comment on the ruling; however, his lawyer claimed the court battle was a victory as The Source had originally planned to distribute the full-length versions of the recordings. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning artist has stepped up his responsibilities of late. After his ex-wife Kim Mathers disappeared for several weeks in avoidance of several legal snafus, the rapper was granted temporary full custody of their seven-year-old daughter, Hailie Jade. The former Mrs. Slim Shady pleaded guilty to a drug charge and a driving offense Friday as part of an agreement to resolve several cases pending against her. By the way, that's my main poin t-of-confusion about the urban African American culture; it's fine and dandy for them to USE slurs, but God forbid you use one on or NEAR them. As a black male I forgive Eminem for it people say alot of things that they don't mean. But, I still feel that white rappers have more leeway as far as subject matter is concern. That they can get away with rapping about anything like raping their mothers and other shit like that a black rapper couldn't do so there is a double standard. I don't care what Cube says about those lyrics now -- I picked him out because those songs were the first to come to my head. I was just trying to show that the rap world is full of racist/homophobic/etc. remarks. It's such a joke for the Source to make a big deal about what Eminem said. That's all. On a side note, I wonder if MikeSC would still be called a RACIST if instead of talking about his experince with blacks and tipping he made it into a rap? And i believe he is getting away with it for a few reasons..He has been basically accepted in the rap game by the rest of the rappers and Dre is his mentor. I bet if it was some other white rapper that was on the outside looking in like Vanilla Ice was, those other rappers would tear him apart, his career would be over. Plus he is making to much damn money for himself and alot of others so he is going to get away with it. If he was on the way down..other story. Almost every black rap song I've heard is about 'being from the "hood"', having some unjustice done to them, smoking something and/or doing some chick. And a lot of black comedians that I've seen always seem to do the same racial jokes over and over. You come off sounded like some kid that don't know nothing thats outside of his suburban surroundings. Ignoring the obvious typos...maybe I am a bit ignorant.
