MrRant 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 WHETHER THE Birds win or lose on Sunday, one thing is almost certain: The city will have to contend with the monkey on its back. By that I don't mean the outcome of the game, but the goon fans - the infamous vulgarians who spoil whatever good publicity the city gets by crossing the line from booster to boor and intimidating the opposing team's supporters. Yes, it happened Sunday during the game against Green Bay, thereby quelling whatever fears people had that the upscale Lincoln Financial Field would turn our town's raw football experience into a cotillion. One fan in a Packers jersey made the mistake of going to the bathroom, according to an Eagles fan sitting nearby, and came back soaking wet. He was relieving himself at the urinal when - yup - two Eagles fans doing the same thing turned to face him and wet him down. Then there's what happened to Steve Erban, whose company books outings for sports fans to major events all over the country. Erban, too, wore his Packers jacket. He said he was continually cursed and pelted with pocket change. He watched as fans ripped a Packers hard hat off a woman and shattered it on the ground. He felt so physically menaced that he turned his jacket inside out and left. In an open letter to the media and NFL sports franchises, Erban questioned whether he ever would return to Philadelphia. Erban's letter suggested he knew about the Philly fans' reputation for rabid overreaction. And I know lots of people are thinking: Why would anyone incite a crowd by wearing his loyalty on his back? That's the problem. We blame the victim and excuse behavior that's indefensible - not to mention rarely witnessed elsewhere in the country. Lifelong fan P.J. McMenamin acknowledges that he has been in football stadiums all over the United States wearing his Eagles green, and never has been treated the way visiting fans are known to be treated here. Although he thinks the only outsiders who get truly harassed are the ones who taunt Eagles supporters - and the only fight he said he witnessed Sunday was between two Eagles fans - he said Philadelphia fans act intimidating for an important reason: "It's the reputation we need to hold up," he said. And I think that's true. The fans who repeatedly have given this city a black eye are empowered by their own reputation for intimidation, rather than ashamed of it. Bad behavior is expected of them, so why not oblige? OK, maybe that's too much psychobabble to explain rowdy behavior; the better explanation might be t-o-o-m-a-n-y-b-e-e-r-s. But whatever the explanation, and whatever the venue, that kind of behavior always threatens to ruin our city's party. Eagles president Joe Banner yesterday acknowledged "a limited number" of problems at Sunday's game. But he said the number of incidents has declined since the team began playing in the Linc, for a variety of reasons, and the team will continue aggressively exhorting fans to treat each other with respect. Still, Banner said he anticipates that "some incidents will occur this Sunday." "We realize that there will be a limited number of Carolina fans here, that there is a risk that they will be mistreated," he said. "Our staff is very aware of that, and they're going to be very proactive again in an effort to minimize the number of incidents." Still, I wish all we had to worry about on Sunday was what took place on the football field - not in the stands. The Birds might soar. But it's hard for the city to rise with them when there's a monkey on its back. http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/7723834.htm While Carolina was my other team outside of the Seahawks I wanted to win the SuperBowl... I hoping they win even more just to screw over the Philly fans. Edit: Made some sense.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Just wait til this week. The start of the game being two hours later than last week means two more hours of drunken tailgaiting goodness. They really need to start having the parking lot being a dry area and police it a bit.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 18, 2004 at the same time people need to realise that football fans are most likely the most rabid fans of a U.S. sport and going into an opposing stadium flaunting your team is just stupid. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Jesus....I'm almost ashamed to be an Eagles fan. Thank god I'm an Eagles fan in Oklahoma and not in that hell hole. People really do get to crazy over this shit sometimes. It's supposed to be fun. An example. OU warns us students NOT to wear our OU colors to OU/Texas weekend because it'll start fights. Texas gives the same warning to it's students. Nobody listens and people get drunk and start fights. Jesus.......

BX 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Philly fans are the worst in the US, and it isn't limited to football. Wrestling, baseball, basketball, it doesn't matter. The Philly fans are unable to restrain themselves. Bunch of fucking idiots.
JangoFett4Hire 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Remember in Philly that stupid Flyers fan was taunting Tie Domi and soon found himself in the penalty box with Tie. And in 99 or 00, Lindsey Ruff, coach of the Sabres took a cup of beer upside the head in Philly. And the chants of Crackhead after Michael Irvin nearly broke his neck at the Vet. And the annual JD Drew battery toss when the Cards come to town... And the Vet was the first stadium to use in-house jail cells... I really don't understand unruly fan behavior... I'm from Boston

And the chants of Crackhead after Michael Irvin nearly broke his neck at the Vet. And the annual JD Drew battery toss when the Cards come to town... Yeah and remember how Domi sprayed water on the guy to incite him. And I really don't recall "Crackhead" chants. I recall cheers, but no crackhead chants. And I find it funny that two batteries being thrown by two nitwits on JD Drew's first game at the vet, has turned into the "annual" battery throwing. I am not going to justify some of the stupid behavior. People are idiots, Philly has an inferiority complex, and they drink a whole lot of beer. Add all of that up and you get stupid stuff. But it is bullshit that all these stories get blown up. Hey, remember that time that a fan ran out of the stands at a Phillies game and attacked a first base coach? And the time they tried to run out of the stands to attack an umpire? Or when fans chanted "wifebeater" at Jason Kidd? What do you mean those didn't happen in Philly? No stupid fan shit happens anywhere but Philly. P.S. The Raiders fans are posers playing dressup.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Soccer or Euro-Football fans have actually killed other fans, so they are much worse. Yeah, really. I think it was the 1994 World Cup; Cameroon lost a match and were out, so the fans in the country went and burned the goalie's house down and destroyed a lot of his property. Not quite as bad as murder, but it's pretty awful.

No stupid fan shit happens anywhere but Philly. P.S. The Raiders fans are posers playing dressup. I remember reading about Islanders (or possibly Rangers) fans chanting "Buy a Porsche" to Ron Hextall early in his career (referencing Pelle Lindbergh's accident). If anything, Philly fans are over-rated when it comes to stuff like this. National media like to play it up when it's something in Philly, and (by & large) downplay or ignore when stuff happens in other sports cities (unless it's something big). That being said, there's no excuse for idiots like in the story. Getting drunk & acting like morons, way to go.
treble 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Remember in Philly that stupid Flyers fan was taunting Tie Domi and soon found himself in the penalty box with Tie. Yeah and remember how Domi sprayed water on the guy to incite him. Meh, Domi didn't spray the guy until he had had enough heckling from him. I'm not saying that he should have done anything, as Domi has probably taken enough harrassment from fans over his career that he should probably be able to ignore it, but it's not like Domi went into the box and was randomly spraying people in the crowd. Agreed. Would you go to a Jewish Temple with a swastika flag? Would you wear a KKK uniform in a Black Panthers meeting? People who root against the home team are just looking for attention anyways. It just so happens that in Philly, they get that attention, and much much more.
