B. Brian Brunzell Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 Helmet- Size Matters Big Daddy Kane- The Very Best of Big Daddy Kane Veruca Salt- Eight Arms to Hold You MC Lyte- Act Like You Know Nina Simone- Reflections I got the MC Lyte and Veruca Salt at this pawn shop next to the store my aunt and uncle own for $6.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Big Daddy Kane- The Very Best of Big Daddy Kane I can't top that. But: The Arcade Fire's Funeral, and the new Tom Waits album.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Big Daddy Kane- The Very Best of Big Daddy Kane I can't top that. It's tough to top Big Daddy Kane, Edwin. By the way, how's the new Waits?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 It's totally great. Crazy songs, and a fair share of straight-up Waitsian balladry (i.e., heartfelt stuff about dwarves). And there's a flipbook in the liner notes! The Arcade Fire is probably even better, though. Wonderful debut. High recommendations to Coat Is My Father and Lord of the Curry in particular, though anyone who's found themselves admiring the Wrens, Broken Social Scene, or Neutral Milk Hotel in the past few years will probably find something to like in the mix of sincerity and incredible arrangements.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 I got that Waits, too. Why would Edwin not rec that Arcade Fire to me, I'm curious.
Henry Spencer Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Probably figured you knew about it already.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Probably figured you knew about it already. Correct. I expect to be a step or two behind you and your damn radio promos. But if you haven't, I think it's certainly right up your alley. All the reviews that say it's awesome are, in fact, not lying.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Merge never sends us anything, so I haven't heard it that way. And I'm certainly aware of all the hype, but I've been lazy about d/l'ing any tracks from it. Name a couple of songs I should peruse on soulseek.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 I did as such on IM, but for the rest of you: "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)," "Wake Up," and "Haiti," maybe. It's all really good.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 My first impression: Not bad. Not bad at all, but I have to give it a few more spins. Sounds a little too much like that sum of its influences at times. I might be able to get past it. EDIT: Edwin, did I say that that one song erupted into a "You Can't Buy Me Love" beat at the four-and-a-half minute mark? I think I did; if so, I meant "You Can't Hurry Love." If not, please disregard this post.

I wondered why you weren't jumping over such an obv. reference.
DCMaximo Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Settling into a new city means checking out CD stores, bringing in this little lot: "Sweet Heart Dealer" by Scarling "Do What You Want" by Garageland "Baby I'm Bored" by Evan Dando "Smitten" by Buffalo Tom
godthedog Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 miles davis - 'milestones'. very good stuff, if a little too upbeat & boppy for my taste. prince - '1999'. very good stuff. only listened to it once, but i think i might have finally found a prince album i can love unconditionally.
Henry Spencer Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Purple Rain on vinyl for two and a half bucks. Flawless.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 prince - '1999'. very good stuff. only listened to it once, but i think i might have finally found a prince album i can love unconditionally. That's my favorite Prince album, though none of the other Prince fanatics here feel as strongly as I do.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Purple Rain on vinyl for two and a half bucks. Flawless. Best. Deal. EVER.
5_moves_of_doom Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Purple Rain on vinyl for two and a half bucks. Flawless. Best. Deal. EVER. Hrm... I got Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate on original-release vinyl for $1.00... that comes close, doesn't it?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 That's a good album—Cohen's best, as a matter of fact—but how can one compare him with Prince?
5_moves_of_doom Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 (edited) Uhm... they both bring the FUNK~? EDIT: I got the Residents' first album, Bitch's Brew, and the third Velvet Underground record as well. Each was $4.99 and under. Do any of those count for anything? Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 The Arcade Fire's Funeral, and the new Tom Waits album. So after listening to these again today at work, this was clearly the best purchasing night of the year: they've climbed to #1 and #2 on my list of favorites for 2004. And, yesterday, it was a "premium used CD," i.e. an unopened Australian import version for $10, and I could not resist: Featuring, among others, perhaps ODB's finest moment: "Dog Shit."
ArkhamGlobe Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 I finally got around to picking up the new Waits album today. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, unfortunately.
snuffbox Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 G. Love and the Special Sauce - Philadelphonic Snow Patrol - Final Straw
godthedog Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 eric clapton - 'me and mr. johnson' cream - 'disraeli gears' can't make a judgment on the latter yet, but the former feels like an enormous disappointment so far. "32-20 blues" is my favorite johnson song and clapton turned it into a total joke. at least i still have 'from the cradle'.
Guest Evolution Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Depeche Mode - Violator Official Soundtrack to The Flinstones Movie Together, they cost under a dollar.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Depeche Mode - Violator Official Soundtrack to The Flinstones Movie Together, they cost under a dollar. I'd pay $20 for Violator, so I think you did well.
Henry Spencer Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency & I. It's tremendous.

There's greatness all over the album, with "Swablr" being my personal favourite.
