Will you notice an NHL Shutdown?

I will notice... granted I'm not hardcore but I watch about 25+ games a year, but I wouldn't notice it as much as say the NBA lockout or MLB.

Hockey fan here and I certainly would notice it.

 

Especially since I live in the "City Of The Champions". The Oilers are a big thing, and if I don't see a thing on the news, newspaper, or TV, I'll definitely notice it.

I'm not hardcore about the sport because simply I've never taken the time to totally understand it, but I do reconize it being a great sport, and I do watch a few games. I wouldn't kill myself (like if MLB shutdown), but I would notice.

I'm a hardcore fan and I'll definitely miss it. I've lost all interest in baseball and I'd just assume die than watch a basketball game. So, I needs my hockey.

 

 

BUT.........the leauge needs to get their shit together. nearly 300 MILLION dollars lost last year leauge wide? That's not good. They need to tell the players they're not worth what they're making and the owners need to show some restraint. Also, the leauge needs to reach out and lure in new fans. Not with gimmicks like the Fox Trax and ugly uniforms, but with helping NHL cities build ice and roller hockey rinks so kids can actually PLAY hockey. It's almost impossible to have a fan base if the fans can't play the game. They need to hook youngsters at an early age by getting them on skates and letting them experience the game. Teal jerseys and cartoony logos won't bring in future fans permanently.

 

Also, the game is seriously getting boring. I just watched a 2-1 Sharks-Jackets game where the Sharks got 45+ shots and only managed two goals. That's a combined 3 goals on 70 shots. They have gotta do something about adding either more offense or a creating a better flow to the game. I don't mind low scoring games, but I'm tired of players getting hooked, grabbed and or trapped nightly with passes going to nobody. I'm also tired of seeing nothing but deflections and crazy bounces as the norm when it comes to goal scoring. I wanna see a forward blaze down the boards, cut in, and let go a wicked wrist shot; not a scrum in front of the net where the puck goes in after hitting a player's skate blade. New rules and new stuff has to be added ASAP.

I'll miss the NHL, but hopefully TSN and SportsNet load up on CHL and AHL games so I'll at least have some hockey to watch. There are a couple of OHL teams within an hour or so of here, plus a Jr. A and Jr. B team, so I can get my fix that way.

 

That being said, I hope they sort their shit out, but I'm not confident.

Yeah I will notice the shutdown. The NHL really needs to get its shit together and some how make the game more exciting for the average viewer. I say they contract a bunch of teams because the talent is diluted in the current game, you've got guys playing who ten years ago wouldn't have made it into the NHL.

 

Get rid of the trap. Whichever coach plays the trap deserves a swift kick in the nuts because it makes games very boring. I'd prefer that teams play the style of hockey that the Oilers play.

 

Even if the NHL does go on strike, isn't the WHA supposed to be restarting this upcoming season or is that project dead?

Hockey is 7th on my list of sports behind the other major 3 and NASCAR and College Basketball/Football. About the only time I watch hockey is if either theres nothing else on sports wise and theres a game on Comcast Sports Net/ESPN or during the playoffs. I don't think I'd miss it.

I'll miss the Tampa Bay Lightning...but that's about it. I am sure it will get a lot of press up here in Detroit considering the Red Wings are one of the two good teams this city has.

Will 100 points not be looked upon has a big deal. Will 50 goals scorers be the norm, and will some players reach the magical 60 goal level?

Seeing as hockey is one of the two sports that I actually care about, yes, I'll miss it if/when there is a lockout. Luckily, though, I live in the college hockey capital of America, so I can go see BU, BC, Harvard, etc. play to get my live-hockey fix.

You missed all the changes they made at the meetings in Las Vegas during the All-Star break, then. They've already addressed this issue.

 

And hell yes, I'd miss the NHL. I'd watch the CHL if it was put on in its place, but not the AHL. They need to implement an NBA-style agreement where the players are guaranteed x% of league revenues in salary, or else there are implications for the league (along with some kind of cap).

I've tried and tried to like Hockey, what with the physicality, emotion, and violence involved, but I always end up changing the channel halfway through a game. It's a sport where I enjoy highlights the most, if that makes any sense.

I didn't miss the changes. I'm wondering if the changes are really go make any difference at all. The league can increase the goalies padding but has long as a majority of teams are defense first.

It's the opposite for me. The Sharks are the only outlet for hockey I have. I guess I could go see a Cal Berkley or San Jose State college game at 1am, but that's all I've got. Hockey just ain't big in my area, there's a reason I have to play roller hockey.

Goalie padding is probably the least significant change. The biggest one by far will be not allowing goalies to handle the puck behind the goal line. That's going to increase scoring, if only because it deprives the Devils of the biggest key to their whole system.
