Markme123 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2004 First heard of Kanye when he was in studio doing an interview on Wild 94.9 not too long ago.(Feb.) That's when I heard Throught the Wire for the first time and was interested on the story behind the song. I don't have cable right now so I had to DL his videos, which impressed me. For the record, All Falls Down is my favorite song right now and it's video different and refreshing. Anyway, I was at BestBuy and was picking up some DVDs and came across his CD which has a unique cover to it. Before I pick it up I want to ask you guys for your opinion on the guy. My friends aren't too crazy about him, but I think he's great from what I've heard so far. Feedback please. P.S. I love Stacy Dash

B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2004 I picked the album up on its release date after hearing all of the hooplah surrounding it and teh fact that I dig "Through the Wire." It's a great cd, and I'd suggest picking it up pronto.
Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 20, 2004 I like "Thru the Wire" a lot. I saw his new video on MTV the other day too. It has, fuck, what's her name? Stacy Dash? I think that's her name. She was in Clueless & Mo' Money. Goddamn she is so fucking hot.
Guest Adrian 3:16 Report post Posted March 20, 2004 I hate Kanye West as a rapper. He's made some nice beats over the last couple years, but his voice and flow are wack to me. He needs to play his position and stay behind the boards. He's also arrogant as fuck. Every interview I've seen him in he's comparing himself to an elite emcee like Nas or Jay-Z. Fuck outta here. I don't know who's been gassing his head up like that but he's straight delusional.
Perfxion 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2004 Well his first CD is as good as the two listed and he has a style that is selling. Its one of the top 5 rap albums of the last 12 months. The only ones better were Outkast and Jay. Plus his content is better than say 90% of the south since his has either a message or is about something different. He has one of my favorite "Gospil" songs I have heard.
Papacita 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2004 Guess this is somewhat related. I heard on Celebrity Justice today that the guy Kanye hit in his accident is getting ready to sue him. He said something about Kanye offering contradicting statements about the cause of the accident (first he said he fell alseep at the wheel, then he said that he was cut off at an intersection), and to top it off, he hasn't received any money from Kanye for damages. He suffered two broken knee caps and was forced to take a year off from his job. Thoughts? Comments?
ant_7000 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2004 I going to cop Kanye's album tommorrow, from the songs i've heard i'll enjoy the album. I agree that Kanye is arrogant as fuck, he needs to be careful before he gets beat up again.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2004 Boy am I sick of hearing of this guy. Thank god I hate rap / hip hop, or I'd probably be even more pissed that he's all anyone talks about these days.
Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 21, 2004 Wow, maybe we can get some more people to troll the thread?

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the original Kanye West thread was linked as the first response and yet everyone's continued to post in this one? Only one thread's needed and I think the other one was superior.

Then don't post in a thread about the guy if you don't even like the genre he represents. It'd be fine if you liked hip-hop but not him, because then you may be able to make some valid points, but considering you don't like it, your thoughts on him aren't needed or worthwhile. EricMM 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 I like his second song, re: Jesus. But I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate on the whole "voice-speeding-up-thing" that he had in "Through the Wire" I didn't like it in "Oh Boy" and I don't like it now. It sounds stupid. He's no Naz, he's no Jay-Z, but he KILLS the whole crunk shit-fest.
ant_7000 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 Yeah, I do hate those sped up soul samples sometimes because he does it so often. I like the "workout plan" for groupies.

It sounds stupid. Oh Boy was Just Blaze, not Kanye. But yeah the whole chipmunked sample thing is getting old. RZA popularized that shit years ago, but he also made other styles of beats. Kanye is quickly proving himself to be a one trick pony.
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 I'm just glad his song brought some love back to Chaka Khan, who I'm a big fan of.
lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2004 Let me remind you that Kanye West produced " You Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys. Yes the sped up soul samples are his bread and butter but the guy can put out other quality shit, like "Stand Up" by Ludarcis. Its the same as how Dre has his signature beats.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2004 Please note that "Stand Up" puts the SHIT in "quality shit" Actually I guess the beats ok. Ludacris just sucks sucks sucksucksucksucks.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 I'll have to agree with Eric here. I've been a big supporter of West, but he got no love from me for Stand Up, a track so weak that there wasn't even that intial stage where it seemed okay. Just awful from the outset (much like most of Luda's latest LP).
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 Anyone still criticizing Kanye for the sped-up soul samples thing needs to either a) listen to the album, or b) listen to the radio over the past couple years. Sure, the two biggest thing he's been on lately - "Slow Jamz" and "Through the Wire" - fill that bill exactly. But you've got "Get By," "You Don't Know My Name," and "I.Z.Z.O. (H.O.V.A.)" among others, and that's before even touching the rest of the album. The only tracks on College Dropout that overtly exhibit his traditional soul-sample thing are "Through the Wire," "Slow Jamz," "Spaceship," and I guess you could make the case for "Two Words" if you're really stretching it. The album's basically a catalogue of really good hip-hop production, similar in tone throughout but very different in style. I also don't care if he acts cocky, because right now he's pretty much backing it up.

Yeah but since Slow Jamz and Through the Wire (both of which I can't stand by the way) are his two big singles you can't say he's not running with the chipmunked samples gimmick. And I've heard every beat you named and then some so save the lecture. If you were gonna name some of his work without soul samples, you should've at least picked Guess Who's Back off of Scarface's last album- now that's a beat. And he ain't backing up shit with the whole cocky steez, because he actually thinks he's a great RAPPER, not just producer, and I think he sucks. Besides lots of rappers are cocky, Jay-Z comes to mind and so did Biggie, but they still were cocky in a sort of likable way. Kanye just comes off as a delusional little prick. I was actually a big fan of Kanye until he actually started rapping. I love a lot of his beats off The Blueprint, The Dynasty, etc but his own album is wack to me.
