Guest MikeSC Report post Posted April 16, 2004 Oh God I saw that Jackie chick on ATH the other day. She sucked but made it to the finals -- wtf? She'd say something like "The Lakers are good" and get 10 points for it! Didn't know there was a Title IX for ATH... Maybe Stat Boy has a crush on her. -=Mike ...Scary thought
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2004 If they want attractive anchors/personalities, they should steal either Lisa Hillary or Jennifer Hedger from Canada ... both are very easy on the eyes, and do a good job of reporting sports. http://www.tsn.ca/personalities/images/lisa_hilary.jpg http://www.tsn.ca/images/pictures/sc/hedger.jpg And, Damaramu, I'm kind of confused by your complaint ... you say that it's lazy to keep the same teams on top, but then say that it's stupid that they slightly changed them. The two thoughts seem to contradict each other. The fact that they're different eliminates the 'they're the same' argument. Or am I mis-reading it? (not a flame, a real question) What I'm saying is that he kept them the same and didn't put any thought into it. Well then he went back and changed it to make it seem like he didn't do that. But all he really did was change the places of Georgia and OU with no real explanation. It was like he said "Oh shit. People will realize I put no thought into this. Better fix that." and just stared at the list before going "Well OU and Georgia can be interchangeable." and just flip flopped them. If he would've explained why he made the change rather than just saying pretty much the same thing that he said before then it would've seemed better. I mean if he's thinking in his head what I'm thinking about OU then it's perfectly fine. "The offense is intact. However the defense loses it's 3 biggest playmakers to the NFL. Tommie Harris, Teddy Lehman, and Derrick Strait are all gone. And they're all going to be VERY hard to replace. And the defense may have more trouble this season than it's letting on. Also everyone figured out in their last two games that if you take out White you take out the offense. So unless the Coaching Staff can figure out how to remedy that over the off season they're going to have offensive trouble." Hell it wasn't that hard. That's just some of the problems they're going to have to address and may have trouble with next season that I could think of off the top of my head. So with that reasoning I don't disagree with the #4 ranking at all.
Guest TheHulkster Report post Posted April 16, 2004 I'm not going to act like I watch a whole lot of ESPN nowadays, because I don't, but I used to watch it every day. Then they took off wrestling and stopped covering boxing. Back in the late-80's/early 90's, they showed World Class and AWA. Then after they tanked: USWA and Global. Now they're too high brow to show wrestling. What's takes more athletic ability? Professional Wrestling or competitive cheerleading? or pool? or Poker? or half the shit they put on their stations? As far as combat sports go, at least ESPN2 shows a lot of old K-1 fights and hosts friday night fights. ESPN doesn't really support any kind of combat sport. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Even dating back to Max's ATH days, whenever Bob Ryan or Jackie MacMullen were around, they got huge points and always either go to the finals or win the show. The last few times Bob Ryan has been on ATH you can tell he didn't want to be there. Today, while Woody and Jay were joking around he just sat there like a lump and got eliminated with short answers. I guess he thought there were too many white guys on the panel that day or something. Or perhaps he just wanted to leave early so he could beat Jason Kidd's wife... Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Another thing I don't like about ESPN is how they do a fairly good job of promoting women's college basketball, yet they give the WNBA next to no coverage. So are they supportive of women's basketball or not? Or are they only supportive of the college game because promoting college ball helps their own NCAA tourney ratings? Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 20, 2004 Or are they only supportive of the college game because promoting college ball helps their own NCAA tourney ratings? Bingo! Where are the WNBA games on? Lifetime? They may have been on Lifetime, but I know they had some WNBA games on the Oxygen Network. I remember seeing a few games on ESPN two summers ago ('02), but none in '03. And I believe NBC carried the WNBA All-Star Game. I'm not sure what channel the Finals were on. Gert T 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2004 Read Stuart Scott's "two way conversation" in ESPN Magazine. That is the best example of Stu's pandering to athletes instead of fans. I don't think I have ever seen him be critical about anybody in those articles, besides the fans for "not understanding", or "it's his choice". Have a damn opinion and state it. Cutting Playmakers, which was a good business move, really did make them look weak, but then again I do not love their attempts at Reality TV. Cold Pizza is unoffsenive enough when I see it, and when stupid shit is on it, I just change the channel. Replaying back-to-back though is dumb. How many "feud themes" are there? Kornhiser v. Wilbon, entertaining, Salisbury v. Clyaton, all right I guess, Skip Bayless v. Stephen A. Smith? Who gives a rat ass about either one of them. I believe the constant pimping of Barry now is to get more access to him if he mellows with the media at all. From what I saw how can the judges on Dream Job talk about the candidates were saying not to get too wrapped up in their catchphrases and "its not Seinfeld", are they watching SC anymore? kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2004 Add this to my list. The constant ass-licking Bitch-ass Berman did regarding Eli and his "classy" posing with a Chargers jersey for that hour he was with the team. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2004 VILMA! Jesus, I'm sick of that one already. Oh, and here's another thing. Now ESPN made Rush resign over his McNabb comments, but guess who I saw in a pre-game promo for Friday night's Basketball games? Spike F'n Lee. The same Spike Lee that claims the White Media overhyped Larry Bird. Why can't terrorists visit Bristol, Conn.? And I just had my neighbor's kid, who is white, ask me if it was OK for the White Media to overhype his entry into the NBA when he gets older...

I'm pretty sure they were trying to get the canidates to focus on the "sports reporting" aspect of the job rather than comedy bits and catchphrases. Kind of, "Just get over as an anchor/broadcaster first, then you get to get your phrases over" line of thinking Steve

phoenixrising 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2004 Chris Berman, Michael Irvin and Trey Wingo(I think that's him - the guy with Jaws and Hoge) were just annoying me today during the draft coverage. Berman is basically all about his nicknames now and contributes nothing to the discussion. And by the way Chris, Manning holding up the Chargers jersey is not a show of class, especially when it is explicitly clear that he did not want to be within ten feet of said jersey. The only positive thing I can say about Irvin is that he didn't wear a bright suit today. I know Michael is a passionate man, but it would help if he toned down the screaming and ranting that was supposed to be his opinion. It was a good thing him and Jaws were on separate sets because they were about to come to blows over the Bengals starting Palmer next year. As for Wingo, I really can't remember the exact comments but he was making a couple of snide remarks that made me wonder where he was getting off making those remarks, not like he looks like he has ever played a sport in his life but I could be wrong. Agent_Bond34 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2004 Another thing that pissed me off last night. THE OVER-DISCUSSION OF THE ELI MANNING SITUATION!!! Don't get me wrong, the whole Eli Manning not wanting to play for the Chargers thing was fucked up, but it did however make for an interesting first few picks, but after that, the constant talk about it really annoyed me to no end. Heck, after watching SC last night --- the guy who said that ESPN wasn't "Seinfeld" (in one of the infinite promos for "Dream Job" --- BTW, was I wrong or did I see that Kit chick from Cold Pizza as one of the judges?) clearly hasn't seen one in a LONG while. The whole show was the viciously unfunny anchors exchanging viciously unfunny quips. Heck, they even ripped off some of Kenny Mayne's stuff --- and Kenny isn't that funny. -=Mike
Slayer 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2004 was I wrong or did I see that Kit chick from Cold Pizza as one of the judges? nope, she was there, and that dropped the credibility of the show bigtime for me (among other reasons) Let's see our panel -That Boss Guy: understandable -Tony Kornheiser: veteran sports radio host and columnist. Again, nderstandable -Lavar Arrington: I know they wanted a voice for "The other side", but I'm not sure how they chose Lavar for any reason beyond "He was available". He was decent though from what I saw And then they have a castoff from a second rate "reality show", but I suppose she's "wild and unpredictable" so it must be okay
