Ted the Poster 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2004 Well, the Tenchi OVA(or is it OAV?) is one of MY favorites, if only for the story between Tenchi, Ryoko and Washu. Ryoko is one of my favorite anime characters ever due to her complexity. The other main characters can eat shit though. One-dimensional bitches. The other two versions of the show are, as you said, utter crap. More so the last one though. Shitty story and even shittier anmation. *leaves briefly to buy imports of the new OVA eps* I disagree. The only ones I can stand are Sasami (who is like 8 years old and is more intelligent and mature than most of them, seemingly around for the pedophiles to lust after) and Kiyone (a smart, reasonable girl who is driven insane and has all of her career opportunities blown by her stupid bimbo partner). Ryoko--bitch. Aika--bitch. Mihoshi--walking blond joke. That girl that didn't exist--bland. Washu--don't care one way or the other. Okay, I'll give you Sasami, but Kiyone never did much for me. The series already had one person playing the stressed out "straight man" role with Tenchi. I never really thought they needed someone similar. To each his own though. Ayeka, I believe is the most disliked character for most people who have seen the series. I love Ryoko's character because she shows more emotional and mental range than anyone else in the series, IMO. Also, I forgot to mention it earlier but I think Inuyasha is a damn good series. I haven't ever seen Wolf's Rain though, and was wondering if it's any good.
Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2004 Re: Witch Hunter Robin It was okay. It had a really slow, dull start for me though, before picking up later on, from the middle to end of what's already been shown. Apparently, a live action adaptation is in the works for the Sci-Fi Network too. I'm counting on it to suck. I saw half an ep of the first Wolf's Rain, before going off to do something and forgetting about it. It was decent in the blood department, at least.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 The series already had one person playing the stressed out "straight man" role with Tenchi. Tenchi never really seemed that "stressed out" to me, but Kiyone seemed to be more easy to identify with. Tenchi was just some dope who happened to be the main character, and occasionally would fight. That's about it. Kiyone didn't get enough focus to really be a great character, but I never saw a reason to hate her or think of her as a "one dimensional bitch." On the other hand, Ryoko does show much more range--because she's practically the real star, so I should hope so for as much as she's focused on. And yes, Aika sucks, but I guess she's just supposed to be the stuck up rich-bitch the animators wanted to humiliate/embarrass/whatever, but it wasn't like you actually got a reason to care much about her. Haven't heard about Wolf's Rain, is that one starting on CN? No one mentioned Slayers yet. Basically it's a comedy series in a sword n' sorcery theme. It's generallly agreed that the different series (Slayers, Slayers NEXT, and Slayers TRY) are of varying quality, descending in order. Some of the humor gets really repetitive, with the same running gags being beaten into the ground ("Lina has small breasts! LOL!" *Dragon Slave* BOOM!), but sometimes it gets on a roll. The episode in NEXT where they go fishing is the funniest thing I've ever seen in an anime, bar none. I've seen part of TRY and all of NEXT, and I generally liked what I saw. TRY was pretty decent from what I saw, NEXT was pretty damn good (especially the recurring comedy relief/foil). Animation sometimes is superb and sometimes seems a bit lacking, but mostly pretty consistent (depends also on whether you're watching VHS or DVD). It's mostly goofy slapstick or bizaare episode plots that bring the laughs, tugged along by a main story that gets more serious at the end. I haven't seen the original series so I can't comment on it. Since I got the NEXT DVD set for 30 bucks used, I'll say I definitely got my money's worth. I don't know about springing for $130 if you can only get it new, though. Depends on how much disposable income ya got, so choose wisely. Anything on the original Slayers series...uh, ask some one else. I wouldn't know.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Yeah. The first episode of Wolf's Rain just aired this past Saturday. So what is the deal with this show? Wild wolves being hunted by people and some werewolves undercover in the human city? I do I have to wait 4 or 5 episodes before it gets good like Robin: Witch Hunter or Blue Gender? Renegade 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Last episode of gungrave was released today and it did not dissapoint. I would denfinently put in up there in my top 3 anime series.
Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 The original Slayers was very good. Azumanag Daioh just came out this week, that's awesome, a comedy about school life. If the Chobits anime holds up as well as the manga, that's good, Great Teacher Onizuka is fun, Excel Saga, Gundam Wing(and most everything Gundam), Lupin III, anything Miyazaki or Takahata, Martian Sucessor Nadesico, Noir, and if you watch a bit of Cardcaptor Sakura, or Cardcaptors(the dub) if you absolute must, I personally like the first movie better than the second one, but you need to get the gist of the show first. That's all I can come up with right now. Oh, wait, you may also like You're Under Arrest, whihc is about two Tokyo traffic cops.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Anybody like Little Shop of Horrors, Crying Freeman, Devilman? I liked LSoH, the parts with Bill Murray were HYSTERICAL.
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Anything on the original Slayers series...uh, ask some one else. I wouldn't know. I've seen the first arc/some of the second arc. It's generally funny stuff, with a solid plot to boot. Amelia's father is like my favorite minor character in the series. "PACIFIST CRUSH! KINDNESS TO ALL CREATURES KICK!" Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted April 29, 2004 The Anime movies that are a good intro into the genre would be "Akira", "Spirited Away", and "Princess Monanoko" (sorry about the misspelling), Also, if you get a chance, try to watch the Dragon Ball Z episodes that they don't show on Cartoon Network. The ones that I have seen are awesome. Sure they are in Japanese, but man, talk about non stop violence, you also can get by on just assuming what is going on. Or you can make friends with someone who speaks Japanese and he can explain what is happening. The ones I have seen are more of a "monster of the week". Where a main bad guy will get all the dragon balls, and wish for great powers. He will also have a few thugs created. Very formulamatic, but who cares when the team gets their butts kick, but Ghoku (sp?) will come to the rescue, and manage to kill all of the thugs, and then the main bad guy. The ones shown on Cartoon Network are more storyline driven, and not as violent.

Heheheh, I think he appeared briefly in NEXT, in fact. Anybody like Little Shop of Horrors, Crying Freeman, Devilman? They made a LSoH anime, too? I really need to see the original Corman movie. Supposedly it was made on a bet that he could make it in 3 days or something like that.

Guest Indikator Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Do not only watch movies. There are a lot of series that evolve instead of the usual american "forget everything that happened in this episode"-thing. "Now and Then, Here and There" , "Planetes" , "Trigun" "Cowboy Bebop" and "Full Moon o Sagashite" are especially in the end comparable to really long movie. Movies like "Grave of the Fireflies" "Laputa" and all the other Studio Ghibli movies are better than almost every movie I have seen. Go to animenfo.com and choose a movie or series that could interest you, you won´t be disappointed
Guest Gendo Report post Posted April 29, 2004 What's that anime (I think it's just a movie or a really short series) with Gally the robot gal? It's pretty good, too. The name escapes me. That is Battle Angel. It is pretty good but definately a little unhappy in the end. As for someone trying to get into Anime I always recommend Evangelion. But since it is truly an aquired taste I now recommend Rahxephon to people with little Anime Experience. It is a total EVA knock off in a lot of ways but it is still good in its own right and if you like it, then you will love EVA. For Humor I can not believe no one has recommended Nadesico. It has got a little bit of everything although it can be a little too fan boyish at times I still really enjoyed the series. **Edit just noticed Masked Man of Mystery mentioned it. Another decent series I do not think that has been mentioned is Escaflowne. It has got some Dragons, some Mechs, a brothers fued, as well as that crazy Anime Science. I also hear that Argento Soma is pretty good. I have been meaning to pick it up so if anyone can back me on that let me know.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 It could be Battle Angel or Angel Cop.
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 I thought we weren't recommending series and stuff, only OVAs or original pictures. But since everybody's going all out and talking about their favorite series just let me refer to some of mine: DragonBall Z. ONLY japanese with subtitles or in spanish. No english dubbed shit. My favorite anime series ever. Mazinger. Or "Mazinga". We weren't mentioning mechas either, but what the hell. I'm sure it's mostly unknown here in the States, it went by the name "Tranzor" I believe. The whole Mazinger family (Grandeizer, Great Mazinger, Mazinkaiser) its pure enterntaiment. Also one of my favorites ever. Ranma 1/2, I see there's no love for this series here, but it's so darn funny. A boy that changes into a girl with cold water? Come on, it's so original. Saint Seiya. Cartoon Network really messed up with one of the most popular animes in the world. "I Ran" as opening song? There's a perfectly good song in "Pegasus Fantasy", no need to change it. And they changed mostly all the names, and made them bleed blue/green blood? Check out the DVDs, unedited and terrific. I'm still waiting for the latest saga to finish. And I second the love for Castle of Cagliostro. Terrific action-packed film, and funny as hell, too.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Do not only watch movies. There are a lot of series that evolve instead of the usual american "forget everything that happened in this episode"-thing. Please... America invented the episodic television show. There have been plenty with character evolution over long periods of time, and STILL allow a viewer to hop in whenever they want to unlike most anime, where it seems you can be knocked out of the loop for missing just one or two episodes. Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted April 29, 2004 What he means is that there is one story span out within 26 or so episodes. It has a beginning and an end. How is that different from Babylon 5? Or DS9? Or THE X FILES, which had one of the most complex and engrossing mythos in TV history?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Sure, go ahead and recommend series if you want, I just don't want to invest in a bunch of stuff. If I can watch it on tv, yeah. And of course, if I do start to get into it, then I'll start to look at series.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 What's that anime (I think it's just a movie or a really short series) with Gally the robot gal? It's pretty good, too. The name escapes me. That is Battle Angel. It is pretty good but definately a little unhappy in the end. That would be it. Shame it wasn't longer. 8-Man After I enjoyed, never saw the original 8-Man. It's very good for less-recent anime. I saw the Escaflowne movie, which is a condensed version of the TV series. I'd recommend that as well. I'll likely check out the real series at some point. Oh, comments from a lurker friend: Wild Pegasus rules, he reccomended Curse of the Yoma and Mermaid's Scar So there's another recommendation for those. El Psycho Diablo 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 For everyone who's cheap, has broadband, or both..BitTorrent is your friend. BoxTorrents only carries complete series (as well as movies, OVA's, and the like), which is great if you don't like having to hunt down individual episodes. They're kind of uptight about people who just leech, so you may want to watch out for that. Anime Suki has a lot of stuff, but it's all unlicensed. Pretty good if you're looking for very new series. Suprnova usually has a bunch to download, but it's almost always individual episodes. (I don't like their navigation system, and the torrents aren't organized very well.) Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 I've really gotten into Witch Hunter Robin... most things on Adult Swim are good to great. I would've liked that show more if they didn't exchange menacing glances in lieu of conversation. And if they'd gotten the whole "witch" thing right, maybe. I mean, it was like watching Clash of the Titans with "witches" at times
Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 If you go and sign up with Netflix, I think they have a good selection of anime, that might not be a bad idea. You might also wan to check your library. The library I go to has a ton of anime and manga

Kardo 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 Yeah, I'd go with Spirited Away and Monoke too. Perfect Blue is a great story up until the big reveal. Up until that I was thinking how awesome the movie is then blam. Plus the ending is just UGH~! I would have loved it if she did turn out to be in that mediative state and had gone totally crazy believing she was an actress. But the manager being psycho just didn't cut it with me.
