Report: Kevin Garnett Wins M.V.P.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Kevin Garnett has won his first Most Valuable Player award, sources told The Associated Press on Sunday.

 

The Timberwolves said there would be a major announcement regarding Garnett on Monday afternoon at Target Center. Two team officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Garnett would receive the NBA's MVP award.

 

Players and coaches were unavailable for comment when word of Garnett's honor came, but it was not a surprise considering the season he had. Writers and broadcasters from each NBA market vote on the award, and ballots are due before the playoffs begin.

 

"That's just a formality," coach Flip Saunders said earlier this week. "I don't think there's much drama. It's pretty much signed, sealed and delivered. It's probably on a UPS truck coming up here right now."

 

San Antonio's Tim Duncan, who won the last two MVPs, and Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal were likely Garnett's closest competitors this season. But the 27-year-old forward, a seven-time All-Star, made his ninth NBA season his best yet.

 

Leading Minnesota to a 58-24 record and the top seed in the West, Garnett averaged 24.2 points and led the league with 13.9 rebounds. He also joined Larry Bird as the only players to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for five consecutive years.

 

Garnett, who established 11 single-season franchise records in 2003-04, has avoided much talk of individual awards and kept his focus on winning a championship.

 

"Anything that comes with that would be great," he said earlier. "It's a team game."

 

The Timberwolves host the Sacramento Kings in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night.

 

Minnesota beat the Denver Nuggets in five games to end a league-record streak of seven straight first-round exits.

 

It's about damn time...

 

In my opinion, not to take anything away from Tim Duncan.... but, KG got robbed of the award last year, so it's good to finally see him get it.

It was a no-brainer really.

 

T.D had won it twice anyways and missed some time this season...Garnett had a very excellent season and is worthy of it.

 

I doubt there will be any constroversy of it this year.

KG has earned it. He should have won it last year, but Duncan wasn't a bad choice at all. They both make their teams infinitely better.

In my opinion, not to take anything away from Tim Duncan.... but, KG got robbed of the award last year

 

Garnett didn't do anything overly impressive to deserve the award last year. The one edge he had over Duncan stat-wise was the small difference in rebounding (13.40 to 12.90), but that was overshadowed by the Spur's regular season (best record in the NBA).

Yeah, I wouldn't say KG got robbed last year. Both guys deserved the award.

 

Garnett was the right choice this season.

I think Garnett deserved it this year because his team ended #1 in the West. Although TD put up great numbers and is one of the best players in the NBA today, the MVP should come down to what the player did to make his team win. Since KG won more, he deserves it more. Same premise as to why Duncan won the award last season.

Garnett had a better #2 (Sczerbiak), #3 (Hudson) AND #4 (Nesterovic) option statistically than Duncan did (Parker, Jackson and Rose, respectively).

Garnett came out first, the first guy in TWENTY YEARS to jump from high school. In that case, doesn't the player who set the precedent earn the scrutinization?

Bored, KG received the criticism because he was first player since Bill Willougby in like 1975. It was unchartered waters 9 years ago. Once KG showed glimpses his rookie season, people begin to realize some players are talented to enter the draft from high school.

Nearly everybody on ESPN and TNT were on the bandwagon promoting KG as the MVP this season so it is no surprise. But Tim Duncan did have a good regular season and in the playoff he is running screens and pick & rolls for Tony Parker. Which shows that even though the Timmy is not leading the league in multiply stats he is still the most important player on the team.

 

The only arguement I can see for Jermaine O'Neal is that the Pacers have the best record in the league.....but he plays in the East.

KG is great and deserves to be MVP this year. As for the bench players arguement well damn right I would pick the Spurs over the T-Wolves, it all comes down to the coaching as Pop can make any role player earn his paycheck. What exactly has Olokandi done this year? Everbody from the 6th man to the last man to the glorified bench warnmer can go into and play some serious minutes. Damn right I would take Brown, Hart, Ward, Willis over whoever the T-Wolves have.

 

Mark Madson? Please~ the man looked like a deer in headlights when left open......its an instant turnover. Mark does play some good D and gets some offensive rebounds but never expect him to shoot the ball.

I wouldn't say "about time." He didn't deserve it till this season. This was the first season his team has done anything. While the guy is great you just can't give it to a guy on a crap team. Well deserved this season though.

They had the fourth best record in the league last year. Duncan deserved it, but I wouldn't call that a "crap team."

Alright, bad call. But I think more credit should be given to guys who actually get their teams somewhere rather then just stats.
